Florio: Trestman Needs To Be Careful With Expectations
(CBS) The Bears have yet to play a single down under Marc Trestman, but the new head coach is certainly pleased with what his team has accomplished thus far.
"This concludes just a heck of an offseason," Trestman said about the completion of minicamp. "We got our practice tempo up, we had great meetings, learned how we were going to meet, divide our time up during the day, the whole thing. It culminates a major portion of our offseason and (leads) into the next step, which will be training camp."
Though the positive energy is nice, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said Trestman needs to do a better job of managing expectations, or things could head south quickly for the new head coach.
"The challenge for any head coach is to manage expectations," Florio told The McNeil and Spiegel Show. "You have to be careful about what you say. He's been around the NFL long enough that he should realize (that.) He's smart enough that he should realize everything he says along those lines is only going to make people more inclined to think this team should be good, and if it's not good, then it's his fault.
"Rex Ryan wonders why people think he's not that good of a coach. It's because he spent every offseason writing checks that he wasn't able to cash. Trestman needs to be careful about that or people are going to expect the Bears to be better than 10-6 this year.
