Chicago Teacher Recommends Einstein Theories For Improving Business Skills
Physicist Albert Einstein had strong opinions on teachers: "Most teachers waste their time by asking questions that are intended to discover what a pupil does not know, whereas the true art of questioning is to discover what the pupil does know or is capable of knowing."
Einstein's opinions on a variety of topics are just one of many reasons why Columbia College teacher Sandra Kumorowski pushes students to take a course on the theorist.
"I'm advising students to take an Einstein class," said Kumorowski. "It gives a totally refreshing perspective on life, and it actually can make you a better businessman and business woman. Any time there is a new business innovation happening, it's usually happening when two totally different elements are brought together. Two different ideas from two different fields are brought together into something new."
As both a business woman and a teacher, Kumorowski is no stranger to experimenting. The Czech Republic native took International Relations, French and English in Prague before moving to Chicago. She holds a bachelor's degree in business administration with a double major in economics and international business from Loyola University, and later earned an MBA.
She also collaborated with an author named Dr. Harold Kerzner to work on various chapters of "Project Management - Best Practices: Achieving Global Excellence."
Kumorowski is now an assistant professor of marketing in the Business Administration department at Columbia College in Chicago.
"I started as a business analyst at a bank in the Czech Republic. I studied economics. I knew I wanted to be a business woman. Everything about business was really attractive to me."
Before becoming a teacher, she delved into the marketing industry and worked as a brand strategist for many big-named companies. After being invited to teach one class at Loyola University, she realized how much she enjoyed teaching her business experiences to others and accepted an offer to work full time at Columbia College.
"To be a good teacher, you have to be a really good listener and have a lot of patience. When I started teaching for the first time I realized that I found a purpose in my life. I love my job. Every day when I get up, I'm excited to go to class and work with students. It's such a rewarding career where you can make students fall in love with learning."
