CHICAGO (CBS) -- The sewing machines are on overdrive inside a West Side warehouse as workers piece together the latest product taking the green world by storm.
"Pallet Wrapz are an eco friendly alternative to plastic stretch film that is wrapped around boxes on pallets," said Pallet Wrapz president Matt Jacobs.

Jacobs says the product is designed to reduce the plastic waste that ends up in landfills.
"It takes 135 linear feet of plastic stretch wrap to wrap one pallet and that weights about one pound. If you multiply that by a company that has 500 pallets in one day you can do the math and see how much plastic stretch waste is going to the landfills," added Jacobs.
Made of sturdy industrial-grade mesh, Pallet Wrapz can be used over and over to wrap and secure full pallets of product.
A single worker can install the wrap. The edge is rested against the pallet and is walked around the skid. The two ends are used to locate the sides. The straps are put through the loops and drawn tight. The straps areVelcroed to the holding strip.
The entire operation takes less than 1 minute.
The company has about 150 clients including grocery stores, liquor distributors and automotive supply. The key, Jacobs says, is about sustainability.
"This will lower your carbon footprint because you are eliminating plastic stretch wrap that is made of petroleum," Jacobs said.
He says there has never been an alternative for plastic stretch film until now.
"This is something new. This is a patented product, it's made in the U.S.A. and we want to make sure that the customer knows how to use it and maximizes it to maximize their savings," he said.
Americans are becoming more green minded and Jacobs says Pallet Wrapz are perfect for companies who want to follow that lead.
"So this is a perfect thing to lower their carbon footprint and that's what it's all about," he said.
