The case involves a 2019 class-action lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by shopper Brian Keim, who alleged that receipts from Trader Joe's stores displayed the first six and last four digits of his credit card, increasing the risk of identity theft. 

The original complaint was filed in Florida after Keim shopped at a Trader Joe's in Palm Beach Gardens. The case was later transferred to the Central District of California since the retailer is headquartered in Monrovia, Los Angeles County.

The federal Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) includes a provision prohibiting businesses from printing more than the last five digits of a customer's credit or debit card number on any electronically printed receipt. The 2003 law also allows consumers to recover damages from businesses that fail to comply.

What is the Trader Joe's settlement?

Trader Joe's said it was unaware of any identity theft resulting from the receipts and did not admit any wrongdoing, noting that it chose to settle the lawsuit to avoid further litigation. In February, the company and the plaintiff reached a tentative $7.4 million settlement, which remains subject to final court approval. 

A fairness hearing is scheduled for August, at which a judge will make a final determination on whether to approve the agreement.

Along with offering payments to the plaintiff and for attorneys' fees, the $7.4 million settlement fund will cover payments to people who shopped at Trader Joe's stores between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, who submit valid claim forms. The company has stores in 42 states and Washington, D.C., most of them in California.

How much will eligible customers get under the settlement?

According to the settlement website tj-factasettlement.com, the share of the settlement fund depends on the number of valid claim forms submitted, but the final payment amount is estimated at $102.45 per claim.

Who is eligible to receive a Trader Joe's settlement payout?

Persons who shopped at Trader Joe's between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, and who submit valid claim forms before the due date are eligible. 

According to the settlement website, "Not all Trader Joe's stores printed receipts displaying the first six and last four digits of the card number, and in those stores that did, only a small minority of transactions involved such receipts."

How do you file a claim for a Trader Joe's settlement payout?

Shoppers who receive an email notice or a postcard with a claim identification number have been identified as members of the settlement class. Consumers who aren't sure whether they are included in the class can visit the settlement website to contact the claims administrator for more information.

Shoppers can file a claim by visiting the official settlement website and filling out an online form, or by downloading and printing a claim form to mail in. Claims can also be made by telephone by calling the settlement hotline at 888-444-7415. Shoppers can file a claim even if they don't have physical receipts.

When is the deadline to file a settlement claim?

The deadline to submit a claim for a Trader Joe's settlement payout is June 9. A court hearing for final approval of the settlement is scheduled for August 10.

Mayor Karen Bass said the city is not only working to keep the industry in Los Angeles, but also to expand it, saying it's "the backbone of our economy." She said the industry has been part of the local economy for so long that it was taken for granted.

The nonprofit FilmLA introduced a new Low Impact Permit Pilot Program, delivering immediate cost reductions for productions that don't have impacts on communities. "We want to make it simple and fast for them," FilmLA CEO Denise Gutches said.

FilmLA is the film office for the City of Los Angeles and the County, working with local jurisdictions to coordinate film permitting and production.

"Because it was so much a part of our city, and we didn't recognize that what was a part of our city could also leave our city," Bass said.

Officials said the new program will make filming permits more accessible and affordable, targeted at smaller productions with limited budgets.

"So, from $931, which is our permit application fee, we're going to $350," Gutches said. The Los Angeles Fire Department will also eliminate its spot check fee for productions.

Bass noted that LA is competing with other states and countries to attract film production. "We have joined forces to more than double the California film and TV tax credit … and just last month we did several measures in the city that the industry asked us to do, such as cutting how much it costs to film in LA."

For example, it used to cost $100,000 to film at the Griffith Observatory; now it costs $30,000, and the number of city staff required on location has also been reduced.

Los Angeles City Councilmember Adrin Nazarian said he is also working to "keep Hollywood home." He introduced a motion to waive city fees for the middle-tier productions that are bigger than micro shoots but smaller than studio films, TV series, or big-budget commercials.

"I'm talking about shoots with crews of 50 or fewer, plus actors and actresses," Nazarian said, calling it a citywide crisis.

FilmLA's new program is a pilot to test the permit application volume and customer satisfaction, to see if the reduced costs can be sustained beyond six months.

Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department said they got the call around 2 a.m. about a blaze in the 20000 block of Bryant Street. When they arrived, flames were shooting out of the windows and there was heavy smoke.

Most of the residents were able to evacuate on their own, but there were a couple in an upper unit that was trapped by the flames. 

Firefighters were aggressive and were able to stop the fire within an hour, before it spread too much. They said two units were badly damaged and six residents were displaced. Four people were hospitalized, and another four were treated for minor injuries but were not transported.

It appears the fire started in one of the lower units towards the front of the building. Investigators will be looking into that to see if they can figure out what sparked that and whether the smoke detectors and alarms went off in the building. 

Officers said that they were called to Acacia Avenue and Dawns Way at around 4:10 a.m. on Sunday when a woman called 911 to report that a "male known to her was attacking her and another individual she was with." She told officers that the man was trying to take her against her will. 

"While the dispatcher remained on the line, a struggle was heard before the call went silent," the release said. "The last sounds heard were a vehicle fleeing, followed by silence, and then responding sirens."

Arriving police witnessed the car leaving the area. They spoke with the second victim, only identified as a male, who told them that during an altercation in which he was attacked, the suspect had forcibly dragged a female victim into his car and fled. 

The victim told police that he was sitting in his car with the female victim in Anaheim when the suspect approached and began hitting the car with his hands. 

"Fearing for her safety, the female victim told him to drive to the Fullerton Police Department," the release said. "As they traveled northbound on Acacia Ave., the suspect intentionally rammed their vehicle. Not knowing the area, the victim continued eastbound onto Dawns Way, entering a cul-de-sac."

There, police said that the suspect again rammed the victim's car before exiting and vandalizing the car further. When the male victim exited his car, police say that the suspect attacked him, demanded his wallet and "threatened to retrieve a firearm to kill him." The male victim allegedly armed himself with a hammer to defend himself, at which point the suspect allegedly swung a metal sign at the victim before "turning his attention to the female victim," police said. 

It was then that the suspect took the woman's phone, as she was on the call with dispatch, threw it on the ground and forced her into his car. 

"Approximately one hour later, a Fullerton Police officer located the suspect vehicle on the shoulder of the 57 Freeway near Ball Rd. in the City of Anaheim. The suspect fled on foot across all lanes of traffic, prompting a perimeter search and the temporary closure of the freeway," police said. 

Hours later, Fullerton PD detectives located the suspect, 42-year-old Anaheim resident Charles Hernandez, in Newport Beach. He was arrested and booked for multiple charges, including kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, felony vandalism and domestic violence, according to police. 

Officers did not say how the suspect and woman knew each other or the conditions of either of the victims.

The legislation, SB 1135, which was introduced by Sen. Catherine Blakespear (D-Encinitas), calls for the establishment of a state program that promotes the coexistence with wildlife and codifies a wolf-livestock coexistence and compensation program. The move comes two years after funding for a similar wildlife coexistence program expired. 

"We can and must responsibly support people and wild animals to exist in a California where we are all under growing pressures and cumulative threats like extreme heat, frequent drought and intense wildfires that animals respond to by moving in search of resources to survive," Sen. Blakespear said in a statement. "That means investing in science-based, situation-specific, proactive strategies to minimize negative interactions and prevent escalation to conflicts that pose risks for people and animals. SB 1135 proposes a program to better protect people, wildlife and communities."

The proposed coexistence program, which would be allocated nearly $50 million through the state's 2026-27 budget, would build on the previous version, which deployed trained regional human-wildlife conflict staff around the state. The absence was noted by CDFW leaders during a state Assembly meeting in January, according to Blakespear. 

"Over the last five years, wildlife incident reports logged by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) increased by 31 percent and calls, emails and field contacts rose by 58 percent," Blakespear's proposal says. 

She noted the recent headline across the state, including "Blondie," the Monrovia mother bear who was captured and put down by wildlife officials in March after it swiped at a woman near the home it was living under with its two cubs. 

The home in question belongs to Richard Franco. He, along with many other Monrovia residents, has documented his encounters with bears over the years, even setting up a system of trail cameras to track the bears' movements. 

"Getting to know her, you could see what a devoted mother she was," Franco said. "She was always building a nest."

Franco and many of his neighbors were angered upon learning that CDFW officials had euthanized Blondie after her capture, which they credited to the fact that she had swiped at the woman days earlier and another person in 2025.

"Forcing them out, and then euthanizing the mom was just traumatic for us," said one Monrovia couple. "It was just tragic, and there was no need for it; it was completely unnecessary."

Situations like this are what caught Blakespear's attention, leading to her proposal last week. 

"It is really my desire to make sure that wild places stay wild, and not be having to resort to lethal measures like killing bears or killing wolves," Blakespear said, while speaking with CBS LA. "We need to have a program that is up and going so we can be educating people."

The program calls for focus on public education, maintaining a statewide incident reporting system and deploying devices like barriers, noise and light machines and other technology that would deter predators from places where they shouldn't be. 

SB 1135 passed on a 5-1 vote and will now be considered by the Senate Appropriations Committee. 

In a news release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, deputies said that they began investigating the illegal sale of firearms in early April. The investigation, which was handled by the Riverside County Regional Gang Task Force and deputies from RSO's Perris Sheriff's Station, led to a search warrant in the 26000 block of Sultanas Road in Homeland. 

"During the search, deputies seized over 500 firearms consisting of rifles, shotguns, and handguns," the release said. 

Deputies arrested one person, 45-year-old Homeland resident Maria Force, at the scene. She was booked for illegally selling firearms, selling firearms with altered serial numbers, grand theft of firearms and possession of a concealed firearm. 

"This investigation is ongoing, and no additional information is available at this time," RSO's release said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said the crash was reported around 11:08 a.m. near Ralston Avenue and Van Nuys Boulevard in Pacoima, near the Whiteman Airport. High-voltage power lines were knocked down by the single-engine plane, a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, as it came down. 

Flight records show the plane was in the air for less than 10 minutes from Whiteman Airport before crashing in the parking lot.

LAFD Fire Captain Milo Cope said firefighters responded to a physical rescue, and crews were expecting a vehicle crash, not a plane crash. "When they came on scene, they saw high tension power lines that were rated up to 35,000 volts on the ground, and a Cessna Skyhawk flipped over on its top in the parking lot …"

Cellphone video from the scene shows good Samaritans lifting the wing of the plane, attempting to rescue the pilot.

Cope said rescue crews responded to an approximately 70-year-old man found outside the plane and transported him to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The plane did not collide with anything else, outside the power lines. Aerial images showed the plane lying upside down in the parking lot of what appeared to be an O'Reilly Auto Parts store with heavy damage to its nose. 

The store is just a few blocks away from Whiteman Airport. Los Angeles Councilmember Monica Rodriguez said the county-owned airport is poorly managed. "Since 2020, I have called for the closure of Whiteman Airport due to repeated plane crashes," Rodriguez said. 

Whiteman Airport Coalition issued the following statement: "Whiteman Airport operates under strict federal safety standards, with rigorous requirements for pilot training, aircraft maintenance and flight operations."

The FAA is investigating the crash.

As of 10:30 p.m., city officials said that the area surrounding the crash was without power as the high voltage power lines were being repaired. 

During a Monday news conference, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell addressed the recent crime wave affecting neighborhoods in North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Sylmar, Valley Village, Valley Glen, and Toluca Lake, among other places.

"We all have zero, zero tolerance for what has happened and what has been happening in the Valley, in terms of the burglaries," Bass said. "It reminds us of a series of burglaries we saw in Encino last year."

She noted the police department quickly responded and took down the crew responsible for the Encino crimes. "And today we are once again surging resources and acting strategically to stop these latest burglaries and apprehend the perpetrators."

The mayor also thanked Valley residents for their vigilance and persistence, as residents in North Hollywood banded together with a nightly dog-walking troupe to serve as neighborhood watch.

The police chief said all available resources are deployed to this issue, with advanced technology and coordinated intelligence being used in the most impacted areas to identify patterns and track suspects.

"Despite budget constraints and resource challenges, we are actively combating, tracking, and arresting these burglary crews with all of our energy and resources," McDonnell said, noting they are sophisticated and organized crews, some of which are international. "Cases like this require patience, time, and frequently extensive follow-up."

McDonnell pointed to a recent burglary arrest in the Topanga area, where the suspect was also linked to 29 additional cases across the city, many of those in the San Fernando Valley.

"At present, Metropolitan Division has identified 49 suspects, with nine caught in the act of burglarizing homes, since the beginning of the year," McDonnell said. He pointed out that year to date in the Valley Bureau, which encompasses the entire San Fernando Valley, residential burglaries are down 48%.

"I want the people of the city to know this, your LAPD is focused, we're relentless, and we won't stop until your neighborhoods are safe," McDonnell said, noting neighbors helping neighbors play a vital role in public safety.

Authorities were called to the 3000 block of Rosecrans Boulevard at around 12:30 a.m. after learning of a fatal shooting that had happened in the area, LASD officials told CBS LA. 

Upon arrival, they found the victim, only identified as a male adult, dead in the parking lot of a Fabulous Charbroiled Burgers.

LASD detectives are assisting the Hawthorne Police Department with the investigation. 

Aerial footage showed the man's body, covered with a sheet and a canopy, next to a car parked outside the restaurant. The parking lot was surrounded by crime scene tape, and multiple evidence markers were spotted on the sidewalk near the parking lot next to a pair of sandals and piles of clothing. 

Officers were called to the 100 block of W. Pleasant Valley Road at around 12:10 p.m. after learning that the suspect was allegedly waving a machete and threatening people. 

The exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, but police say that when they arrived and encountered the man, who hasn't yet been publicly identified, he failed to comply with their commands. It was then that officers say they opened fire, striking the suspect. 

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said. His condition was not immediately known. 

No other injuries were reported in the incident. 

Aerial footage from the scene showed dozens of evidence markers on the floor, surrounding what appeared to be a pool of blood, outside of an eatery called "Restaurant El Fortin." The nearby gas station was completely blocked off by crime scene tape as officers investigated the incident. 

"I want to profoundly thank our staff for their unwavering dedication and hard work serving people experiencing homelessness across Los Angeles County," said a statement from Gita O'Neill, the interim CEO of LAHSA. "Our staff has been the driving force behind the historic reduction in street homelessness we've seen over the past two years. Though our agency's structure is changing, the monumental impact of their work—housing nearly 80,000 people over three years—speaks for itself."

LAHSA shared the announcement in a news release, noting that 216 of the employees being laid off were union-represented staff and 68 were non-represented. They said that the final day of employment for impacted employees would be June 30, 2026, coinciding with the end of the county's fiscal year. 

However, some employees could be retained "to continue their critical work after June 30," depending on the final details of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass' proposed $14.98 billion budget for the 2026-27, which was revealed on Monday. Of that total, approximately $788 million was estimated to be allocated for homelessness spending, a sharp drop from the $953.3 million allocated in the current fiscal year budget.

Officials also noted that the restructuring would eliminate 414 total positions, 140 of which are currently vacant. In all, the agency's staff will be reduced from 600 to 320. The layoffs were announced on Monday to comply with the contract between LAHSA and the union representing the largest portion of their workers, Service Employees International Union Local 721, which requires 60 days' notice. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Bass were informed of the decision. 

Bass' budget shows that city spending on LAHSA was expected to continue for the annual point-in-time homeless count, the care administration services, shelter and housing intervention, along with strategies aimed at addressing street homelessness. 

Last year, the Board of Supervisors approved the transfer of some employees and nearly $300 million in funding from LAHSA to the county's first homelessness department, the Department of Homeless Services and Housing, which formally launched in January. The decision came after the joint city-county agency faced audits that criticized the handling of taxpayers' money.

In the days following the decision by the board of supervisors, then-CEO Va Lecia Adams Kellum announced that she would be resigning from her role. 

"I am incredibly proud of LAHSA's talented and dedicated staff and deeply grateful for their tireless work. I thank them and the Commission for the opportunity to serve as CEO and for our partnership in reducing homelessness in our region," Adams Kellum wrote in her resignation letter.

Despite the layoffs, LAHSA officials shared a series of statistics touting their work on homelessness. They said that LAHSA has helped reduce street homelessness by 14% and 18%, countywide and citywide, respectively. They also said that they made more than 77,800 permanent housing placements from 2022 to 2024. 

"The historic milestones we have achieved are a direct result of the relentless dedication of LAHSA's workforce, but the changing funding landscape requires us to right-size and calibrate our agency for the future," said Amber Sheikh, Chair of the LAHSA Commission.

LAHSA officials said that the transition will mark a "necessary evolution" for the agency, including the shifting of the contracting and program oversight role to focus primarily on the city.

"By narrowing our focus to macro-level governance, data management, and securing federal funding, we are stepping into our true role as a strategic architect of the region's homelessness response system. This shift allows us to operate with greater precision and deliver stronger, more measurable system-wide performance," O'Neill said. "Our work with KMPG and the restructuring we've already put in place for contracting will help us be a strong partner to the City as well."

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges against D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, on Monday morning, saying he was charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances, lewd and lascivious acts with an individual under 14 and mutilating a body. 

"These charges include the most serious charges that a DA's office can bring," Hochman said. 

Burke, 21, was arrested last week after becoming the target of a grand jury investigation into the death of Hernandez.

"Celeste was just a child, under 14 years old, when David Burke allegedly engaged in repeated lewd and lascivious sexual relations with her," Hochman said in a news release announcing the charges. "But Burke's actions did not allegedly stop there. When she threatened to expose his criminal conduct and devastate his musical career, Burke allegedly murdered her, cut up her body and stuffed her body in two bags that were placed in the front trunk of his car."

Hochman also said that the dismembered body sat in the car for months as it decomposed, until it was found in Sept. 2025. Charging documents allege that Burke committed the crime of "continuous sexual abuse" that started on or about Sept. 2023, the month that Rivas turned 13 years old. 

The murder charges included special circumstances — lying in wait, committing the crime for financial gain and murdering the witness in an investigation. The criminal complaint also included special circumstances allegations of murder of a witness, as well as a special allegation that Burke personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a sharp instrument, to commit the crime in April 2025.

Hochman said the first-degree murder charge could carry the maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. 

"The determination on whether or not the district attorney's office will seek the death penalty will be made at a later time," Hochman said. 

Burke appeared in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Monday afternoon, where his attorneys entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

"We believe the actual evidence will show David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez nor was he the cause of her death," an attorney said during the hearing. They have asked for a preliminary hearing within 10 days.

CBS LA has reached out to Burke's attorneys for a comment and is waiting for a response. 

"The Burkes are not surprised but are terribly disappointed that the District Attorney chose to charge David. Nevertheless they support and stand by him one hundred percent," said a statement from Burke's family, shared by their attorney.

Hernandez's remains were discovered on Sept. 8, 2025, after police responded to reports of a foul smell attracting flies at the Hollywood Tow yard. Her body was found "severely decomposed" and "dismembered" in the trunk of a Tesla registered to Burke's name, according to court records. 

Authorities found a decomposed head and torso in a cadaver bag inside a Tesla stored at the yard, court documents said. In another bag inside the car, dismembered body parts were found.

"The condition of her remains delayed the medical examiner's ability to be able to determine her cause of death. The substantial amount of time that passed between her death and the discovery meant that crucial evidence had degraded or disappeared," LA Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said. 

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department said Hernandez was reported missing from Lake Elsinore a year prior to when prosecutors believe she was killed. A "Missing Person" flyer stated she had last been seen on April 5, 2024, after leaving her home at 9 p.m. that day. Hochman said Hernandez was at Burke's Hollywood Hills home on April 23, 2025, at "his invitation." McDonnell said that Hernandez was in a "sexual relationship" with Burke. 

He added that throughout the 7-month investigation, the department has faced criticism of how they've handled the case and for their decision not to provide details. 

"I want to be clear about something: My duty is not to fuel speculation. It's to deliver justice," McDonnell said. 

Hochman said his office will be using witness testimony, documents and different types of admissible testimony in their case. 

"In a situation where you don't have an eyewitness account … you have to go through a very rigorous and thorough investigation to look at all the digital and forensic evidence," Hochman said. 

Burke was on the "D4vd Withered 2025 World Tour" when the identity of Hernandez was released. He canceled a Seattle concert the same day she was identified and cancellations of subsequent shows followed. 

"To Ms. Rivas' family, we cannot undo the pain that you are feeling," McDonnell said. "Our hope is that today brings some measure of accountability and a step in the journey toward healing."

Hochman said anyone who may have any information regarding the case to come forward.  Burke remains jailed without bail and is due back in court on Thursday.

In a news release from the California Highway Patrol, officers said that the crash happened at around 5:30 a.m. on SR-91 just west of Green River Road. They learned that a black Ford F-150 was driving eastbound in westbound lanes after entering the freeway via an off-ramp. 

"As the Ford passed Serfas Club Drive, it was involved in a head on crash with a white Volvo tractor," the release said. 

The driver of the Ford, identified as 25-year-old Lake Elsinore resident Abel Quintero, was pronounced dead at the scene by Corona Fire Department firefighter paramedics, police said. The semi truck driver, only identified as a 20-year-old Moreno Valley resident, was hospitalized for minor injuries suffered in the crash. 

Officers also noted that debris from the crash struck a Mercedes-Benz that was also driving in the same area. The driver of that vehicle was uninjured. 

"At this time, Alcohol/Drugs is an unknown factor in this crash," CHP's release said. 

As their investigation continued, CHP officers asked anyone who may know more to contact them at 951-324-7210.

Christopher Laney, 37, of Lancaster, was sentenced to 14 years and six months after he pleaded guilty to distribution of fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in September last year

In a news release shared by the Drug Enforcement Administration, federal officials said that Laney used an unregistered drone in January 2023 to transport $80 worth of fentanyl from his Antelope Valley home to a church parking lot nearby, where it was picked up by another person. He admitted to the claims in his plea agreement, which was filed in the Los Angeles federal court. 

Court papers then said that the person who picked up the drugs from the parking lot provided them to the victim, who was only identified as J.K. She was found dead the next day from a fatal overdose. 

Footage taken from the drone showed that Laney used the device to transport and distribute narcotics on multiple other occasions, prosecutors said when he pleaded guilty in 2025. 

The U.S. Attorney's Office said that Laney possessed both fentanyl and methamphetamine at his home, as well as multiple firearms, which included an AR-15 style rifle without a serial number and two 9mm ghost-gun pistols. 

Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 25, of Diamond Bar, pleaded guilty to one felony count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and nine felony counts of reckless driving causing injury, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said. 

The violent crash happened on Nov. 16, 2022, while 76 members of the LASD Sheriff's Academy Class 464 were on a training run in the early morning. As they ran along Mills Avenue, near Telegraph Road, Gutierrez, who was driving in the opposite direction, crossed into the northbound lanes and struck members of the group, the DA's Office said. 

Gutierrez was initially arrested at the scene shortly after the crash, when deputies claimed that the crash was intentional. He was later released due to a lack of evidence. He was arrested again in Nov. 2023 by California Highway Patrol officers, but was released from custody a few hours later. At the time, he was charged with 11 counts. 

After a lengthy investigation found there was no evidence to suggest that the crash was intentional, detectives determined that Gutierrez likely fell asleep at the wheel. 

The crash left 25 recruits injured, 10 of whom suffered serious injuries. Alejandro Martinez-Inzunza, 27, died from his injuries eight months after the crash in July 2023. 

"Today's plea and sentence cannot undo the devastation of that day, nor will it bring back the life that was lost," said a statement from LA County DA Nathan Hochman. "But it does mark a step toward justice and a measure of closure for the victims and their families whose lives have been forever changed."

If convicted as charged, Gutierrez faces five years on probation and a suspended eight-year state prison term that he could face if he violates the terms of probation. He waived his right to a jury trial in January, leaving the case to be decided by a Los Angeles County Superior Judge if it had proceeded. 

Muldoon was a Los Angeles native, born and raised in the port town of San Pedro. He attended Loyola High School and USC, where he played college football, earning him two Rose Bowl rings. The athlete took up acting during the football offseason, and at the same time, modeling for Calvin Klein.

He made various television appearances until landing a role in 1992 as Austin Reed on "Days of Our Lives." In 1994, Muldoon won the Soap Opera Digest Award for outstanding male newcomer.

After three years on the soap opera, he moved to play Richard Hart on the 90s hit drama, "Melrose Place." Then in 1997, he starred in the science fiction classic, "Starship Troopers," playing Zander Barkalow.

From 2011 to 2012, he returned to reprise his role as Austin Reed on "Days of Our Lives," appearing in nearly 500 episodes of the soap opera series.

Muldoon produced and starred in "Badge of Honor,"  "Arkansas," and "The Comeback Trail."  His latest movie, "Dirty Hands," has a scheduled release date later this year.

He is survived by his partner, Miriam Rothbart, his parents, Deanna and Patrick Muldoon Sr, and his sister and brother-in-law, Shana and Ahmet Zappa.

The incident happened on March 23 between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the health foods store in the 24100 block of Valencia Boulevard, a news release from LASD said at the time. The suspect allegedly exposed himself and then touched the woman inappropriately as she was kneeling and looking at items in the aisle, deputies said. 

After more than a month of investigation, deputies identified and located the suspect. He was taken into custody with the assistance of Crime Impact Team deputies, an updated release from LASD said on Monday. 

"At this time, investigators are not aware of any additional related incidents in the Santa Clarita area," the release said. 

They did not identify the suspect or provide a city of residence, but when their search began, he was described as a man in his 30s with black hair and brown eyes, who stands about 6-foot-1 and weighs approximately 220 pounds. 

Deputies thanked the public for the valuable tips and information that they provided to help assist the investigators with locating the suspect. 

The announcement comes in accordance with California Mosquito Awareness Week, when vector control officials seek to alert the public over the health threat that mosquitoes pose and how they can prevent year-round breeding. 

"You've heard of Shark Week, Mosquito Week is worse, because mosquitoes kill more people than any other animal on Earth," said Brian Brannon, with Orange County Vector Control. "We're really concerned; we want to get the word out to people."

Officials say that peak mosquito season hasn't even yet, but the warm winter and brief period of abundant rain to start the year contributed to an early breeding season for the neighborhood nuisance that can carry viruses like West Nile, Dengue and Zika. 

In the first few days of April, Orange County Vector Control officials say that they caught 43 mosquitoes per trap, more than two times the 17 mosquitoes trapped in the five-year average in that same time period. 

The problem has spread throughout Southern California, including in the Los Angeles County city of El Segundo, where residents complained of a months-long nightmare beginning in late 2025, when there was an influx of mosquitoes at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. In response, the county's vector control laid traps to help mitigate the problem. 

Vector control officials advise that people walk their yards once a week to dump and drain standing water from buckets, containers and plant saucers, where mosquitoes typically lay their eggs. People are also advised to fix screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes from entering their homes and to have repellent ready. 

"We're seeing a lot of mosquitoes," Bannon said. "We're seeing almost as many mosquitoes in one week as we saw in summer last year."

Despite this, Bannon says that the temperatures aren't high enough for West Nile virus to replicate in the wild, but with warmer weather incoming in weeks, he says people should be vigilant before it's too late. 

Roger Schultz says he and his wife were out of town on Saturday and that their two dogs, Summer and Winter, were in their indoor-outdoor enclosure when the attack occurred. He says that he saw one of the dogs looking up the hill behind their home earlier in the day, but wrote it off as a quail. 

After checking the live camera in their yard several times, thinking that they were sleeping, he realized that after hours had passed, something was wrong. 

"Checked on them again and was like, 'They're not moving.' So, I had the neighbor come up," Schultz said. 

The neighbor found both of the dogs dead.

"It was mauled pretty bad; it looks like they fought together right near the fence line," Schultz said. "Mountain lions usually avoid large dogs, and to have two of them, we thought they'd be OK."

Unfortunately, Summer, a 65-pound Anatolian Shepherd, and Winter, a 90-pound Siberian Husky, were no match for the puma. By the time they returned home, the mountain lion had returned.

"The cat came back and took the shepherd's body over the five-foot fence," Schultz said, noting that their security video captured the moments when the big cat dragged the dog across the yard. "It looked about the size of the shepherd, but obviously very muscular with fighting features, with the claws and the feet."

He used the tracker in Summer's collar to follow the trail, finding the big cat's lair about 150 yards behind their yard. He says that with so many children in their neighborhood and other family pets, it's too dangerous for nothing to be done. 

"There's small kids that we see walking with their parents," he said. "Kids will run out 50, 100 feet ahead of them on the walks. So, that's why I'm really worried."

California Department of Fish & Wildlife officials say that the behavior isn't unusual for a mountain lion, but noted that they would be investigating to make sure that the incident isn't part of a larger pattern or problem. 

"The department recommends residents take preventative measures to protect their pets and livestock from predators," said a statement from a CDFW spokesperson. "Some steps residents can take are supervising pets when outdoors, especially at night, and providing a secure enclosure for pets that are outside."

Mountain lions are a common sight for people living in parts of Southern California, especially near hillsides. In February, a Los Angeles County woman was on a night walk with her dog in Glendale when they were attacked and the mountain lion ran off with her dog. 

Schultz said that officials told him that since he tracked the collar to a spot so close to their home, and a place where children walk, they're going to escalate the investigation. 

"Hopefully, this tragedy makes everyone aware that we're not in a safe environment from nature," he said. "We're living in their space."

They were called to the 1800 block of E. Granada Court at around 8:50 a.m. upon learning of a domestic incident at a home in the area, according to a news release from the Ontario Police Department. Callers told police that a person inside the house was armed with a firearm. 

"When officers arrived, they contacted several family members outside the residence," the release said. "Initial information suggested a family dispute, with additional family members still inside the home."

Police say that the suspect, an unidentified man, exited the house while armed with a rifle. 

"The suspect fired several rounds in the direction of officers, which led to an officer-involved shooting," according to the Ontario PD release. 

The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries, police said. He has not yet been identified pending examination by the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office. 

Police said that an "assault rifle and several casings" were recovered at the scene. 

No other injuries were reported in the incident and police said that there is no known outstanding threat to the public. 

"As outlined by the Ontario Police Department policy, the shooting is being investigated by the Ontario Police Department in coordination with the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office as a parallel investigation," the release said.

The 6-foot-3-inch Cal State Northridge player balances his sass with his athletic prowess on the court, hoping to inspire the younger generation.

"Representation matters, especially in today's day and age, where having that kind of representation of being an LGBTQ athlete, in obviously a male sport … hey, it is possible being part of a community and also showing you as an athlete being dominant in that," Lucas said. 

The CSUN redshirt junior lettered in volleyball at both Upland High School and Los Altos High School in Hacienda Heights. He helped lead Upland High to a CIF 2022 state championship and received numerous other titles and accolades as a high school player.

He said he's received overwhelming support, with the 33 million video views in one week showing that the world is rallying for him. "It kind of really shows that there is some progress made in the world, especially being in the LGBTQ community."

Lucas said it wasn't always so easy growing up and that it's important "to be yourself" and "be your own fan."

Not all comments have been positive, and recently, a sports announcer said during the broadcast of a CSUN match that he was surprised that no one had "popped" him yet for his "antics."

Lucas said he was shocked. "Announcers in my opinion have a job to call a game unbiased and to kind of hear that was a little bit shocking to me … maybe people aren't as fond or supportive as I thought they were."

But with overwhelmingly positive fan support, Lucas said he feels like he is doing the right thing.

CSUN faces UC Irvine in the Big West tournament on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at UC Irvine.

Yee's exit comes just days after former Rep. Eric Swalwell dropped his own bid for governor and resigned from Congress amid sexual misconduct allegations, upending a race in which recent polling shows nearly a quarter of likely California primary voters remain undecided.

With no clear Democratic frontrunner emerging in those surveys, pressure has been building on lower-polling candidates to drop out of the race. Party leaders, including state Democratic Party Chairman Rusty Hicks, have warned that a crowded field could splinter the vote and risk advancing only Republicans to the general election under California's top-two primary system.

Yee said the decision to suspend her campaign was not due to ongoing pressure from the Democratic Party.

"I mean, they're doing their job and for whatever reason decided to put money into a poll that would narrow the field," Yee said in an interview with CBS News California Investigates just hours before she announced the decision publicly. 

She called the so-called "shame polls" a self-fulfilling prophecy. But said her decision to end her campaign stemmed from her own internal polling. 

"What they were saying, which was concerning, was that experience and competence was not polling as high as we thought when I first started this race," Yee said.  

In a conversation with CBS News California Investigates correspondent Julie Watts, Yee expanded on why she thinks her campaign never took off.

"We are in this new era where it's kind of almost a reality TV show mentality that people want, and frankly, conflict sells," she said. "That's what gets people's attention."

The longtime fiscal watchdog — who served on the state Board of Equalization before her tenure as controller — was widely seen as one of the most competent and qualified candidates for governor, including by fellow candidates who spoke highly of Yee in background conversations with CBS News California. Several said they hoped she would work in their administrations if they won the race.

"I'm not a flashy person, I don't come with gimmicks," Yee acknowledged. "I even joked with my team one time, maybe I just need to bring a folding stool and throw it off the stage just to get some attention. I mean, what's it gonna take, right?"

Yee reflected on the emotional toll of the race, the realities of the numbers, and why she believes now is the time to step aside.

"I am stepping aside from this race for governor because this is a time where I do not see a path to be successful. But success comes in all different forms," Yee added. "I do feel we've run a successful campaign. But the work doesn't stop here. My commitment to public service is both in my public life and in my personal life. So I will be back to the communities."

The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded to calls of a robbery around midnight near Sixth and Hope Street.

When officers arrived, they found a man in his 70s on the ground who had been beaten and then set on fire. The man was taken to the hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Police say there was a Good Samaritan who stopped and was trying to help the victim. They are talking to that person and trying to see if there were any other witnesses who saw what happened.

A man was taken into custody and Sgt. Robert Incontro said he will be booked for attempted murder.

Details about what led to the attack are not immediately known. 

"It's very nice to have a community," said Karin Gault. "We look out for each other. It's very important right now."

After nearly two weeks of burglaries and break-ins, targeting homes in North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Sylmar, Valley Village, Valley Glen and Toluca Lake, among other neighborhoods, local authorities have stepped up patrols in the area. Despite this, two break-ins were reported over the weekend in North Hollywood and Studio City. 

Late Saturday night, one of the homes that Gault usually walks her dog past was targeted by burglars who entered through a second-story balcony and took off with cash and valuables, Los Angeles Police Department officers told CBS LA. 

Because of this, their usual nightly troupe of dog walkers turned into a neighborhood watch party. 

"It's just really disturbing, because there's been so many," Gault said.

Residents think that the sudden surge in crimes and the apparent randomness with which happening may require a greater response than just city resources. 

"It's great if the community does stuff, or our tax dollars does stuff, for sure, and that should be expected," said Dustin Heindel. "But in the end, I think you should do what you need to do to protect yourself."

CBS LA has reached out to Mayor Karen Bass' office for a response on the pair of additional burglaries that occurred over the weekend, but has not yet heard back. 

In a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, officials said that deputies from the Twin Peaks Station were called to the 9000 block of Old City Creek Road upon learning of a critically missing 49-year-old woman. 

Deputies began canvassing the area, along with two K-9s named Keva and Naji, who were being handled by Deputy Jasso and Deputy Bakker, according to the release.

"K-9 Naji initially tracked a scent, after which K-9 Keva continued along down a nearby horse trail," the release said. "Approximately half a mile into the search, Keva diverted down a ravine, where Deputy Jasso heard the woman calling for help."

Deputies said that the woman had fallen 200 feet down the ravine and required an airlift to safety. She was hoisted from the ravine by SBSD's Air Rescue 306. 

"Every second mattered. A missing, vulnerable adult with a traumatic brain injury walked away from home and didn't return," a news release from the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department, which is a branch of SBSD, said. "K9 Naji set the track. K9 Keva took it the distance—leading deputies down a half-mile trail and into a steep ravine, leading to the missing person. Deputies located her, and due to the terrain and her condition, an air rescue hoist was initiated."

The woman's condition was not immediately noted. 

Scattered showers are predicted to move through the region beginning Tuesday afternoon and lasting through the night as the tail end of a storm system passes through. 

A CBS LA Next Weather Alert has been issued for Tuesday due to the rain, which comes after an extended period of dry weather and warmth. 

National Weather Service officials said that Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties will see the heaviest rainfall, with anywhere between 0.50 inches and 1.5 inches of rain expected. Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange counties and the Inland Empire will see significantly less rain, with between 0.10 inches and half an inch of rain predicted. 

Temperatures will see a nearly 10-degree drop from the weekend, with high 60s and low 70s expected for most of Southern California. Some regions, specifically the high desert and mountains, will also experience strong gusts of wind between 45 and 50 miles per hour. 

NWS officials said that there could be some "minor nuisance flooding" in prone areas, like burn scars and mountain regions. 

In a news release shared to social media, police said that someone called dispatch to report that a bomb was hidden in the area of Main Beach. 

"Out of an abundance of caution, emergency personnel immediately initiated safety protocols, evacuating the beach and nearby businesses while establishing a secure perimeter," the release said. 

Police said that the Orange County Sheriff's Department's Bomb Squad was also called to the scene to "conduct a comprehensive search of the area." 

Deputies used explosive detection canines to search the beach. After a thorough investigation, they said that no explosive devices were located and the area has been deemed safe, police said. 

"Knowingly making false reports of emergencies, including bomb threats, is a criminal offense and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," the release said. 

Video posted on social media showed a large part of the beach blocked off by crime scene tape, with empty beach chairs and umbrellas as the investigation continued.

Details surrounding the incident remained limited as the preliminary investigation got underway, but aerial footage showed five LAPD officers standing outside of a home on Burbank Boulevard with guns drawn as they entered following a burglary call. 

Police said that the burglary was reported at around 9:45 p.m. at a home in the 4900 block of Strohm Avenue. They believe that the suspects gained entry through a second-floor balcony.

Investigators were seen walking in and out of the home as they interviewed neighbors and scoured the area for evidence. The family living at the home was not present when the burglary occurred, police told CBS LA. After searching the home and property, police also determined that the suspects had already fled by the time they arrived.

It's unclear exactly what was taken, but neighbors said that the burglars were inside the home for about 15 minutes and took off with a large amount of valuables. 

There have not yet been any reports of arrests connected to the incident. 

This is the latest in an extensive series of burglaries and break-ins plaguing the San Fernando Valley, which prompted Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to request increased patrols near Ventura Boulevard and the surrounding neighborhoods. 

Early Saturday morning, a Sherman Oaks jewelry store was broken into when suspects tunneled through the wall of the store's bathroom, and earlier in the week, a Valley Glen home became one of at least five homes burglarized in the last week. 

The Misfit Bar & Restaurant said that it would be closing for good on Saturday night, ending a 15-year run as one of the city's favorite eateries. Dozens of people gathered to say their final goodbyes throughout the day. 

"We're really bummed, because it's one of our favorite bars down here near The Promenade," said Levi Stein. 

In a statement shared on the restaurant's website, LGO Hospitality said that the closure was due to "impacts from ownership's abandonment and chronic conditions plaguing Downtown Santa Monica."

"Unfortunately, a revolving door of five building ownership entities, with the ever-declining commitment to preserve and build upon The Misfit's years of success, squandered the value that we built together with you, our guests," the statement said, in part. 

Stein, who was one of many who lined up on Saturday, acknowledged that downtown is far from what it used to be in the past. 

"I think there's definitely a perception that Santa Monica has become a little bit of an unsafe area at times," Stein said. 

Just a block away, in the city's shopping and dining district, the Britannia Pub has also announced its looming closure come July, when its lease is set to expire. 

Though they didn't explicitly state why they planned to close, restaurant owners said that they have already secured a new location after spending 30 years on Santa Monica Boulevard. 

"While change is coming to this corner, the Britannia spirit isn't going anywhere," said a post on the pub's Instagram account. "The next evolution of the pub will see the Cain boys taking the reins, ensuring that the legacy of great service and community remains in the family while bringing a fresh energy to our next chapter."

Locals said that its sad to see so many iconic restaurants, where millions of people have made memories, closing down for the litany of reasons plaguing parts of Los Angeles, including crime, increased rent and cost of living. 

"Everything's gone. Honestly. We grew up in L.A., so it's really sad to see Third Street when we were growing up, and now as an adult," said Sabrina Elfarissi.

Santa Monica city officials acknowledged that a change of shopping habits and safety concerns has hurt the popular shopping center. Despite this, they believe bigger things are on the horizon. 

Last month, the city approved a $3 million plan aimed at bringing business back to the downtown area. The plan includes 90 minutes of downtown parking for just $1, eliminating fees for new builds and remodels and extending the Entertainment Zone across all of downtown.

"It'll take time to reach full crescendo, I think, to where the public sort of gets it," said Hunter Hall, with the Main Street Business Improvement Association.

Hall said that as many as 17 new businesses are planning to open in the area in the coming months, including a Taco Bell Cantina that will take the Britannia Pub's location, and a Raising Cane's restaurant. 

In a news release shared by the Long Beach Police Department, officers said that the crash happened back on Feb. 28, 2026 at around 1 a.m. near Redondo Avenue and Anaheim Street. 

"Upon arrival, officers located a male adult pedestrian lying unconscious in the roadway," the release said. "Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the pedestrian to a local hospital."

On Wednesday, April 15, police said that the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as 57-year-old Montebello resident Ronald Sera. 

Investigators believe that Sera was struck by a Toyota Previa van as he walked across Redondo Avenue in a crosswalk. Instead of stopping to help, police said that the Toyota continued driving west on Anaheim Street.
