Jaden Pierre, 15, was shot dead Thursday after a dispute on a basketball court in Roy Wilkins Park at Merrick and Baisley boulevards.

He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition, but later died.

Community mourns loss of teen

A vigil was held at the park Monday night to remember the teen who was a student at Eagle Academy, just down the street.

Elected officials and local residents of all ages attended to pay their respects.

"We have failed you. Your son should be home," Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said to the teen's family.   

"It's very heartbreaking to our community. We have children of our own. They travel to go to school. This shouldn't have happened," Shantee Williams said.  

Neighbors were shocked after the shooting, saying the area is normally a safe place for young people.

"I thought it was an exercise because they have exercises over here a lot. I thought it was a police exercise," one witness said, referring to the NYPD's response.  

Photos of suspect released

Police released photos of an individual on Friday who is wanted in connection with the shooting.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said at the vigil that the NYPD knows who is responsible and where they are. She asked that person to turn themself in.

James also said the shooting might have been gang-related.

This is the former movie producer's third rape trial in New York after he was tried in 2020 and 2025. He is accused of third-degree rape of actress Jessica Mann in a hotel room in 2013. He has pleaded not guilty.

Weinstein, 74, is currently serving a 16-year sentence from a conviction in California. He has been behind bars for a little over six years, but continuously says he "never assaulted anyone."

Jury selection began last week, and seven men and five women were picked. The trial is expected to last four weeks.

Weinstein exerted his powerful status over Mann, prosecutors say

Prosecutors said Weinstein preyed on fragile and sheltered young women during opening statements. They said he was one of the most powerful and influential movie executives who exerted his status over Mann.

Lawyers said the two met at an engagement party when Mann was 27 and Weinstein was 61. 

"This case will come down to power, control and manipulation," prosecutors said, arguing the word "no" was one that Weinstein "was not used to hearing, not in his professional life and not in his personal life."

They said Weinstein pretended to be interested in her career as she was trying to become an actress in Los Angeles and "dangled praise and attention like a carrot." They met up multiple times.

When Weinstein found out Mann was dating someone else, he was enraged and raped her, prosecutors said. 

Defense says they had a consensual relationship

Jacob Kaplan, one of Weinstein's lawyers, said the case is about regret. He emphasized there were four years' worth of messages between the two that he said will show they had a loving, supportive and consensual relationship for those four years.

He said Mann stayed around Weinstein because of the opportunities he could provide, including meeting other producers and movie stars.

"She knew what she wanted and she knew how to get it," the defense said. "Harvey was the opportunity that she had always been looking for."

There was no reason she couldn't have walked away, he said.

The defense said Mann regretted the relationship and changed the narrative. Kaplan emphasized emails the defense will show throughout the trial between Mann and Weinstein. 

"This case will be her word against her own word," Kaplan said.

Weinstein's rape retrial details

This case stems from the 2020 trial, where Weinstein was convicted of raping Mann and forcing oral sex on another woman. The New York Court of Appeals overturned the conviction.

Then, he had a retrial in 2025, but it resulted in a split verdict. He was found guilty of sexually assaulting Miriam Hale and not guilty of assaulting Kaja Sokola. Jurors couldn't reach a verdict on allegations that he assaulted Mann.

The judge upheld the first two convictions but declared a mistrial on the final rape charge after the jury foreperson refused to keep deliberating. Weinstein will be sentenced on his 2025 conviction after a verdict is reached in this trial.

Weinstein hired a new legal team for this trial – the same attorneys who defended Sean "Diddy" Combs.

"The defense may be coming a little heavier at that consent argument, possibly, because this is now a one victim case instead of a multi-victim case," legal expert Richard Schoenstein said.

Weinstein was considering pleading guilty to avoid trial in January. But his lawyers said he still maintains his innocence.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges against D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, on Monday morning, saying he was charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances, lewd and lascivious acts with an individual under 14 and mutilating a body. 

"These charges include the most serious charges that a DA's office can bring," Hochman said. 

On Tuesday, Rivas' family shared their first public statement since the investigation began last year. 

"We would like to thank the Los Angeles Police Department and the District Attorney's Office for their hard work. We would like to thank the people of Lake Elsinore for all their support," the statement said, in part. "Celeste was a beautiful, strong girl who loved to sing and dance. Every Friday night was movie night and we spent wonderful times together. We love her very much and she always told us that she loved us. We miss her deeply."

"All we want is Justice for Celeste," the statement said.

Burke, 21, was arrested last week after becoming the target of a grand jury investigation into the death of Hernandez.

"Celeste was just a child, under 14 years old, when David Burke allegedly engaged in repeated lewd and lascivious sexual relations with her," Hochman said in a news release announcing the charges. "But Burke's actions did not allegedly stop there. When she threatened to expose his criminal conduct and devastate his musical career, Burke allegedly murdered her, cut up her body and stuffed her body in two bags that were placed in the front trunk of his car."

Hochman also said that the dismembered body sat in the car for months as it decomposed, until it was found in Sept. 2025. Charging documents allege that Burke committed the crime of "continuous sexual abuse" that started on or about Sept. 2023, the month that Rivas turned 13 years old. 

The murder charges included special circumstances — lying in wait, committing the crime for financial gain and murdering the witness in an investigation. The criminal complaint also included special circumstances allegations of murder of a witness, as well as a special allegation that Burke personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a sharp instrument, to commit the crime in April 2025.

Hochman said the first-degree murder charge could carry the maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. 

"The determination on whether or not the district attorney's office will seek the death penalty will be made at a later time," Hochman said. 

Burke appeared in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Monday afternoon, where his attorneys entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

"We believe the actual evidence will show David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez nor was he the cause of her death," an attorney said during the hearing. They have asked for a preliminary hearing within 10 days.

CBS LA has reached out to Burke's attorneys for a comment and is waiting for a response. 

"The Burkes are not surprised but are terribly disappointed that the District Attorney chose to charge David. Nevertheless they support and stand by him one hundred percent," said a statement from Burke's family, shared by their attorney.

Hernandez's remains were discovered on Sept. 8, 2025, after police responded to reports of a foul smell attracting flies at the Hollywood Tow yard. Her body was found "severely decomposed" and "dismembered" in the trunk of a Tesla registered to Burke's name, according to court records. 

Authorities found a decomposed head and torso in a cadaver bag inside a Tesla stored at the yard, court documents said. In another bag inside the car, dismembered body parts were found.

"The condition of her remains delayed the medical examiner's ability to be able to determine her cause of death. The substantial amount of time that passed between her death and the discovery meant that crucial evidence had degraded or disappeared," LA Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said. 

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department said Hernandez was reported missing from Lake Elsinore a year prior to when prosecutors believe she was killed. A "Missing Person" flyer stated she had last been seen on April 5, 2024, after leaving her home at 9 p.m. that day. Hochman said Hernandez was at Burke's Hollywood Hills home on April 23, 2025, at "his invitation." McDonnell said that Hernandez was in a "sexual relationship" with Burke. 

He added that throughout the 7-month investigation, the department has faced criticism of how they've handled the case and for their decision not to provide details. 

"I want to be clear about something: My duty is not to fuel speculation. It's to deliver justice," McDonnell said. 

Hochman said his office will be using witness testimony, documents and different types of admissible testimony in their case. 

"In a situation where you don't have an eyewitness account … you have to go through a very rigorous and thorough investigation to look at all the digital and forensic evidence," Hochman said. 

Burke was on the "D4vd Withered 2025 World Tour" when the identity of Hernandez was released. He canceled a Seattle concert the same day she was identified and cancellations of subsequent shows followed. 

"To Ms. Rivas' family, we cannot undo the pain that you are feeling," McDonnell said. "Our hope is that today brings some measure of accountability and a step in the journey toward healing."

Hochman said anyone who may have any information regarding the case to come forward.  Burke remains jailed without bail and is due back in court on Thursday.

It happened just after 1 a.m. on March 22. Troopers were patrolling near the eastbound Grand Central Parkway when they spotted a car crashed into a tree. The car was completely engulfed in flames.

Body camera video shows flames shooting out of the front of the car. Troopers immediately tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze.

Officers from the NYPD stopped to assist. The video shows troopers and officers smashing the windows and pulling each passenger out.

"Give me your hand," one trooper says as he reaches for a passenger. 

The three passengers were transported to the hospital, along with the driver, Mohammad Haque, who was able to get out of the car on his own. 

"This collaborative effort saved lives," the NYPD said in a social media post. 

Haque, 20, was arrested in connection with the crash.

He was arraigned on April 16 on a host of charges, including three counts of assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree reckless endangerment. 

Participants in the event broke the windshield of a police car, the NYPD said. 

No one was injured, however. 

"I'm surprised nobody got killed" 

It happened just before 2 a.m. Saturday. Residents were outraged watching cars make a literal ring of fire near two gas stations, followed by plumes of black smoke at the intersection of Eliot Avenue and 69th Street in Maspeth. 

Surveillance video from a nearby business captured drivers revving the engines and the sound of tires screeching, along with the ring of fire. 

"I'm surprised nobody got killed. Those kids was running between the cars," one Maspeth resident said. 

"Scary to see that," said another. 

Search for 8 suspects

At least eight people are being sought for reckless endangerment for the event, which included drag racing. 

New York City Councilmember Phil Wong said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told him in a private meeting Tuesday two of the vehicles have been impounded. Wong also claimed Tisch said an NYPD task force to address the issue was responding to a different car meetup that night.

"Only one car responded, which is not enough. And then you cannot stop anybody with a crowd of 100 cars with one patrol car," Wong said. "It ended up people jumping on top and broke the windshield. There were no arrests."

Arrests made in separate car meetup, NYPD says 

The NYPD said it made multiple arrests in that other car meetup, and that officers responded to the scene in Wong's district within one minute of receiving 911 calls. They immediately began dispersing the gathering, the NYPD said.

"There should be individual accountability, but it could have a big deterrence effect if these cars are immediately towed," City Council Public Safety Committee Chair Oswald Feliz said.

Wong said his meeting with Tisch was "productive," and that he and the commissioner spoke about increasing patrols. 

"We have resources, and we have the technology, including drones, so that we won't have to engage in high speed chases," Wong said.

Dozens of car meetups broken up

The NYPD said it "has long had an aggressive plan to deter and stop car meetups." 

So far in 2026, the NYPD says it has responded to and shut down 61 "ride-outs," resulting in 51 arrests so far, 62 car seizures and 418 summonses.

The disclosure was revealed in a Peacock documentary.

Heuermann admitted in court earlier this month that he strangled all his victims to death, but Ellerup heard his confession prior to his plea.

"She is still living there" 

"He looked very nervous. Very, very nervous. And I said to him, 'So, Mr. Heuermann, I understand that you are confessing to me on these murders. Can you please tell me how many of these women did you kill?' He said eight," Ellerup said.

The excerpts were released from an upcoming Peacock documentary.

"Asa has now come to terms with that Rex is the Gilgo Beach serial killer, accepting the fact that he did plead guilty. He's responsible for murdering the eight women, and that seven of those murders took place in the residence," Ellerup's attorney Robert Macedonio said. "She is still living there. She has nowhere else to go."

"He said I wasn't home during all of them," Ellerup says in the documentary. "He said yes, they were killed in his room downstairs. All except one."

"Now it's the house where he killed the girls"

"That is sick. That changes everything, you know," Massapequa Park resident Etienne Devilliers said. "Now it's not the house where the serial killer lived. Now it's the house where he killed the girls."

Mary Ellen O'Toole, a former FBI profiler, says Ellerup is likely asking herself some difficult questions.

"How the heck did I let this person into my life? What did I miss? Was he thinking about killing me, or my children?" O'Toole said.

The Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI will be interviewing Heuermann as part of his plea agreement.

"They will have a strategy worked out, and they will cover his lifetime from the time he was a little boy 'til the time he was arrested, just to better understand what makes this individual tick," O'Toole said.

FBI experts will be patient, and thorough. O'Toole said psychopaths like Heuermann are pathological liars.

The 78-year-old victim's loved ones broke their silence Monday and called on the city to do more to find their beloved grandfather's killer.

"Somebody knows something"

Family members gathered outside the Mitchell Houses in Mott Haven, just feet away from the bench Spence was sitting on when police say he was fatally struck by a stray bullet on Thursday night. They said not enough is being done to provide answers.

"Our father, our grandfather and our children's great-grandfather didn't deserve this," said Michael Reid, Spence's son.

Adding to the family's heartache, members say there is frustration over the lack of updates from detectives and silence from Mayor Zohran Mamdani on the loss of a man revered by locals as the neighborhood's "Pops."

"I would like that same energy as if a police officer was standing here or if they were talking about a police officer having been shot," Reid said.

"Somebody knows something, but somebody is not saying anything," community leader Rev. Kevin McCall said.

McCall then announced the reward for information in the case that leads to an arrest and conviction.

NYPD officials said the investigation is ongoing, while the mayor's office did not immediately respond to CBS News New York's request for comment.

NYC homicides down more than 20%

Despite the recent wave of widely-publicized violence, police say homicides are actually down citywide. The latest numbers show murders are down by more than 22% from this time last year.

Overall, the first quarter of 2026 saw a historic low in major crime across all five boroughs, the department said.

For this Mott Haven community, however, stats can't measure the weight of their grief.

"Edgar was something of a fixture and a monument to Mitchell [Houses]," one woman said.

"We have failed you. Your son should be home," Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said to the teen's family. 

"I was feeling sad for him that it happened to him and his family. That really shouldn't happen to anyone," one 11-year-old added.

The latest on the investigation

On Friday, police released photos of someone wanted in connection with the shooting, and New York Attorney General Letitia James said during the vigil on Monday that the NYPD knows who is responsible and where they are. James also said the shooting may have been gang related.

"Gang life is not a good life. It's no life," she said.

"Somebody could've stopped it"

Pierre's killing was captured on cellphone video, but is too disturbing to show. Loved ones said they are concerned that no one acted.

"My son is 17. It could have been my child," parent Salma Bacchus said. "Somebody could've stopped it. Somebody could've stopped it."

Parents said they are now concerned for their own children's safety.

"It's very heartbreaking to our community. We have children of our own. They travel to go to school. This shouldn't have happened," Shantee Williams said.

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. said Friday that Pierre's family had just moved into the neighborhood. He called the shooting a senseless and horrific tragedy.

"We have work to do as a community," he said. "We have to give these young people an outlet, otherwise they're going to be in the park with mayhem."

Richards Jr. stressed the importance of expanding youth programs for after-school and in the summer.

Community activists arrived at 1 Police Plaza on Monday morning to demand change and accountability after the violent arrest of Timothy Brown last week in Brooklyn, which has enraged many in the community.

"We need them to be arrested"

Some of those activists spoke with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. 

The Rev. Kevin McCall said Tisch spoke with him and Eric Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, and others, for about an hour. 

During that meeting, Tisch discussed with McCall the changes that have been implemented in the wake of Brown's wrongful arrest inside a liquor store at Hoyt and Baltic streets in Boerum Hill. The changes were mandated prior to the meeting with McCall and the other activists, the NYPD said.

Three members of the NYPD involved in the operation were placed on modified duty, including two detectives and a sergeant.

"We also talked about the status of the officers, because there's an investigation that has to take place. But we need them to be suspended. We need them to be arrested. That's what real justice looks like," McCall said, adding, "We're going to take over this city and our neighborhood precincts if our demands are not met because something has to happen."

Meanwhile, Hawk Newsome, the co-founder of Black Lives Matter Greater New York, said he, too, had a meeting scheduled with the police commissioner on Monday morning, but said it was canceled.  

The NYPD, however, disputes that account, saying Newsome and Black Lives Matter were never scheduled to meet with Tisch, so no meeting was canceled because it was never set to take place. 

As courtesy, the NYPD said, when Newsome and BLM arrived at 1 Police Plaza, it offered to let them meet with people with Community Affairs.

Tisch pledged to enforce policy on body-worn cameras, Carr says

The NYPD said it's undertaking a 90-day review of the NYPD's narcotics section, including a review of policies regarding activating body-worn cameras during apprehensions, and increasing oversight of narcotics operations.

The officers involved in Brown's arrest were supposed to be wearing body cameras and weren't, according to the NYPD.

"It's so emotional to witness this, to have to come out again to speak on this," Carr said. "It's like another stab in the heart."

Carr's son Garner died in 2014 after an officer placed him in a banned chokehold.

She said Tisch pledged to enforce the department's policy on body-worn cameras.

"There's a lot of promises that she made, so we just have to hold her feet to the fire and see that this all comes to pass," Carr said.

New videos show Brown's arrest and another man in handcuffs

Exclusive video obtained CBS News New York shows the moments leading up to Brown's violent and wrongful arrest during a drug sweep in Brooklyn last week. Police said Brown was arrested because he matched the description of a drug dealer's associate who was wearing green shorts, but they later said he was not the person they were looking for.

As outrage grows over Brown's arrest, a new video is raising even more questions. It shows a second man in handcuffs near Hoyt and Baltic last Tuesday.

Last week, Ronald Maxwell told CBS News New York's Mahsa Saeidi that he, too, was taken into custody during that same drug operation.

Maxwell claimed he was taken to the 84th Precinct, and released without charges.

The NYPD was asked why he was taken into custody and a spokesman replied, "There is not an arrest on file based on the information provided."

On Monday, CBS News New York obtained surveillance video from the store. An employee said it was recorded during that same drug sweep.

Maxwell said he is the man seen in cuffs. CBS News New York sent the video to the NYPD and the department responded with the same quote: "There is not an arrest on file based on the information provided."

Whitney was an avid art collector who had thousands of rare books. At least 28 of them were stolen between 1982 and 1989. The Whitney family reported them missing in 1989 to the Nassau County Police Department.

They include works from famous authors, including John Keats, Oscar Wilde and James Joyce. 

Whitney himself lived a storied life. He was a highly decorated World War II veteran, publisher of the New York Herald Tribune, the president of the Museum of Modern Art and the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom.   

Books turn up over 30 years later

Decades after the rare books in the Whitney family's private collection vanished, investigators found a lead. 

"We were able to trace them down to South Carolina in 2006," said Matthew Bogdanos, chief of the Antiquities Trafficking Unit. 

But the trail went cold.

A portion of the books resurfaced in January 2025 in Manhattan when a person tried to sell them to two separate rare book dealers, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

"While the family reported these works missing in 1989, they had not reappeared on the market until quite recently in 2025, right here in Manhattan, when an individual attempted to sell them," Bragg said. 

The man took the books to B&B Rare Books and Adam Weinberger Rare Books, where he told staff he inherited them from his grandfather.

Both dealers contacted law enforcement after discovering the books were listed on the Art Loss Register. Six search warrants in 2025 and 2026 were executed, and the books were seized.

However, part of the mystery remains. Authorities cleared the man who tried selling the books because he wasn't born at the time they went missing. He said he inherited them from his late grandfather.

"We have not identified any specific individual for the theft or thefts," Bogdanos said. 

Books returned to Whitney family

In 2026, a state Supreme Court judge ordered the books to be returned to the Whitney family. 

"My grandparents were extraordinary collectors. This is one example of their taste and their skill," Peter di Bonaventura, the grandson of John Hay Whitney, said. 

An investigation into how the books were stolen from the estate and the status of the remaining 11 missing is ongoing, according to prosecutors. 

"Manhattan is the cultural capital of the world, home to museums, galleries, and dealers displaying incredible artworks and antiquities. Yet the integrity of this marketplace is undermined when stolen items are on display," Bragg said. "We will not allow our borough to be a center for trafficked art and antiquities, and I thank our team of prosecutors and investigators for their work on this case."  

Letters worth $2 million being returned

Among the books being returned is a bound collection of 37 love letters written by the British poet John Keats to his fiancée, Fanny Brawne. It has eight of the original handwritten letters, including the first letter he ever wrote to her.

Fanny's children sold them at an auction in 1885, after she died. The sale inspired Oscar Wilde to write a sonnet titled "On the Sale By Auction of Keats' Love Letters."

"Second book 'De Profundis' by Oscar Wilde, also captures a tragic love story, but a different one. It's the love story between Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas. Another book you will see before you is the Empress Josephine's copy of the 1812 Imperial Almanac. Empress Josephine, married to Napoleon. 'Finnegans Wake' by James Joyce; it is signed by the author. And then finally 'Household Stories' by the Brothers Grimm," Bogdanos said. 

The family plans to auction the books and donate the proceeds. They are collectively worth nearly $3 million.  

The children were killed in what police described as an "execution-style" shooting. They included five girls and three boys, ranging in age from 3 to 11, the coroner's office confirmed. According to the office, their mothers identified the children as: Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5. 

Police identified the suspected shooter to CBS News as Shamar Elkins. He previously pleaded guilty to a weapons charge in 2019.  Elkins served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from 2013 to 2020, as a signal support system specialist and fire support specialist, the U.S. Army confirmed.

Ten victims were struck by gunfire in all, Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Chris Bordelon said at a news conference. 

Two women have been hospitalized with serious gunshot wounds and were expected to survive. One of the women was the gunman's wife, according to police. 

One of them underwent surgery Monday, said Shreveport City Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor. Taylor was among several local officials who underscored the dangers of domestic violence at a briefing Monday, with another councilperson calling it an "epidemic" in their city.

Taylor said the victims' family members asked that the public "allow them to grieve and go through this process" when she spoke with them Sunday.

"This is a difficult, difficult process," the councilwoman said. "And at this point, what they are trying to do is to wrap their mind around what has occurred in their family. How do they navigate through this?"

A relative told AP that the two women were the mothers of the man's children. She said he and his wife had been arguing about their separation and were due in court Monday.

The incident began as a domestic dispute at around 5 a.m. The suspect first shot a woman in the face before going to a different, nearby residence, where all eight people who were killed were shot, according to police. They said he targeted them even as some tried to escape by crawling through a window and climbing onto the roof of the house, where one child was found dead. 

Police also said a 13-year-old was injured when they jumped off the roof to escape; that child is expected to recover.

Officers initially received a call about the shooting just before 6 a.m., Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said at a briefing. At the time, the caller said they were on top of the house with the suspect still inside. Several minutes later, on a separate call, the person told dispatch that she and her children fled from the roof and were in the backyard, according to Smith. 

The police chief said officers received another call an hour later, from someone who "stated that her boyfriend had shot her, taken her three children and fled the scene," identifying the man as Elkins.

Smith called the shooting "one of the most challenging incidents" his department has ever faced and "one of the worst days that could have ever happened here in Shreveport."

Fred Montgomery, a neighbor who lives across the street from the home where the shooting took place, told CBS News he hadn't seen any signs the shooter would do something like this.

"The kids played in the yard every evening," Montgomery said. "Yesterday evening, he was sitting on the porch, I waved at him, he waved back, the children were in the yard ... and then this morning we woke up to all of this."

Photos on the gunman's Facebook page show him with several of his children. One of them was posted just two weeks ago, with the caption: "With all my kids, what a blessed day."

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said on X that multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said he couldn't "even begin to imagine how such an event could occur" and said investigators will be "going through every piece of evidence at every scene" to understand what took place.

"Over 30% of our crimes and 30% of our murders in the city of Shreveport are domestic in relation. Now that number has gone up," Shreveport Councilman Grayson Boucher said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. "We've more than doubled our homicide in the city of Shreveport because of one act of domestic violence."

Officers responded to the shooting just after 6 a.m. at the residence where the victims were shot, Shreveport police said. The suspect fled, carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint nearby and was chased by police, according to the department. Police said the suspect was killed after an exchange of gunfire with officers involved in that chase.

The shooter was acting on his own, police said. They believe he used multiple weapons, as officers recovered a handgun at the residence and a rifle-style handgun on the gunman's person.

Louisiana State Police said its detectives will investigate the circumstances around the suspect's death, since it involved an officer. In a statement, the superintendent said investigators were "working to process the scene and gather further information."

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said the shooting "affects the entire community."

"This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had in Shreveport," he said, adding, "We all mourn for these families."

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said on X that he and his wife Sharon "are heartbroken over this situation" and are "praying for everyone affected," while Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy said his "heart is with the Bossier Shreveport community as we mourn the innocent lives lost this morning."

"I wish the surviving victims a complete and swift recovery," Cassidy said. Bossier Parish, neighboring Shreveport, is where the car chase ended and the suspect was fatally shot, police said.  

House Speaker Mike Johnson, whose Louisiana district includes Shreveport, referred to it as a "heartbreaking tragedy" in a post on X and said he was holding "the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time." 

Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who started a gun-violence prevention organization after she was severely wounded in a mass shooting in 2011, also released a statement. "This is a devastating act of domestic gun violence, taking the lives of eight young children. My heart is breaking for their families, the survivors, and everyone in Shreveport today," Giffords said. "All of us should be outraged that we live in a country that routinely subjects our kids to such unimaginable violence."

The White House was also monitoring the situation, an official told CBS News.

The 38-year-old was granted bail after securing the $300,000 set by a judge and is expected to be released from the Elmira Correctional Facility in the Southern Tier early next week.

"He will remain free throughout his appeal," the president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association said.   

Duran's attorneys said they were "very pleased but not surprised that the Appellate Division found that there are legitimate appellate issues in Sgt. Duran's case."

"The government concedes that Sergeant Duran is not a flight risk and is not a danger to the community," attorney Arthur Aidala told CBS News New York. 

"It was obvious to the Court that [Duran] ... was entitled to be at home with his family during dependency of the appeal," Aidala said earlier in a statement. 

Ex-NYPD sergeant sentenced in bench trial

Duran was sentenced in April to three to nine years in prison for the death of Eric Duprey, who allegedly sold drugs to an undercover Bronx officer and tried to flee on a motorized scooter when being placed under arrest on Aug. 23, 2023.    

Duran was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter by Bronx Supreme Court Judge Guy Mitchell in a bench trial; there was no jury. He's the first NYPD member in a decade to be found guilty of causing a civilian's death while on duty.  

Black Lives Matter of Greater New York held a small protest against the decision to grant Duran's bail in Manhattan's Flatiron District. 

"When was the last time you heard of a person being convicted of killing someone and then being released on bail?" a man at the rally said. 

"The Duprey family is deeply disappointed by the Appellate Division's decision to grant bail pending appeal. While we respect the appellate process, this outcome reopens painful wounds for a family that has already endured an immense loss," said Jonathan Roberts, the attorney for Duprey's family. "Our focus remains on seeking accountability and ensuring that the seriousness of what occurred is never diminished. We will continue to stand with the Duprey family as this case proceeds, and we remain confident that the judicial process will ultimately uphold justice."

The New York Attorney General's Office, which prosecuted Duran, had no comment the bail decision.   

Islanders promote sergeant's defense fund

The New York Islanders promoted Duran's defense fund on their jumbotron during their final game of the season on Tuesday. The team declined to comment on the video asking fans to join "the fight for justice" after it was criticized by Duprey's family.

"The Duprey family is deeply disturbed and disheartened to learn that the New York Islanders used their platform to promote a fundraiser benefiting the individual that was responsible for Eric Duprey's death," Duprey's family said in a statement, in part. "At a time when his family continues to grieve to amplify support of the person responsible for his death is both painful and profoundly inappropriate."

"What's been going on here was a terrible injustice and this kid should never have even set foot inside a prison," said Vincent Vallelong, president of the NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association.

The union cannot pay Duran's legal fees since he is no longer with the NYPD. 

Judge watched video of 2023 incident

Video of the deadly incident shows Duran hurling a picnic cooler at Duprey's head to get him to stop. Duprey then swerves and slides under a vehicle. He was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma to the head.

Prosecutors told the judge that Duran was trying to "save an arrest," not lives, and that Duprey was not an imminent threat. They argued it would have been more reasonable to yell "Look out!" or "Watch out!"

Duran testified Duprey was going to crash into officers if he was not stopped. Defense attorneys argued Duprey died because of a  "series of bad choices," including selling drugs, driving an illegal motorbike and driving on the sidewalk.
