This Morning from CBS News, Oct. 4, 2016
Clinton vs. Trump
A new CBS News Poll out today has some good news for Hillary Clinton, but it paints a picture of an electorate on edge and worried about the future of the country. Clinton has improved on some key candidate qualities, while Donald Trump’s numbers have held relatively steady. The poll gauges overall approval ratings, and looks at how each candidate fares on specific voter concerns.
Kaine vs. Pence
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine will have their big moment in the spotlight on tonight when they face off at 2016’s first and only vice presidential debate. We look at how both men have prepared for the limelight, and what they may be asked to debate and address about the campaign up to now.
VP poll
Overall, the 2016 vice presidential candidates remain largely unknown to voters nationwide, but both have net positive ratings, unlike the candidates at the top of the ticket. Our new CBS News Poll suggests one of the candidates does have a recognition advantage, and asks Americans whether they believe either man could successfully step into the nation’s top job if necessary.
Hurricane Matthew
A powerful, killer hurricane is slamming Haiti as the southeastern U.S. braces for a possible direct hit in the coming days. North Carolina and Florida have already declared states of emergency as Hurricane Matthew hammers the Caribbean islands with dangerous 145 mph winds.
Whistleblower
Wells Fargo’s CEO has claimed he first heard about the creation of fake accounts in 2013, but one whistleblower tells “CBS This Morning” she alerted the company years before that. We meet the woman who says she was fired for her honesty, and get her side of the story.
Fraud warning
Federal investigators are raising the alarm over what they say is persistent fraud and abuse in Medicaid-funded personal care services. Estimates of questionable billing since 2012 amount to more than $600 million, and investigators say tighter regulation is needed to prevent patient neglect and fraud.
Economic truth
During the first presidential debate, Hillary Clinton said the U.S. was on the “precipice” of having a stronger economy, while Donald Trump characterized the ongoing recovery as the “worst revival” since the Great Depression. Who’s right (or at least less wrong)?
