Bannon's rise; Yates' fall - CBS News Brief, Jan. 31, 2017

Some rise

President Trump has described “the media” as the opposition party, repeating the words of Steve Bannon, his chief strategist who managed his November election victory. The White House says Bannon will sit on the National Security Council -- a place usually insulated from politics. It’s a breathtaking rise for someone whose previous job was CEO of a highly controversial, ultra-conservative website.

Some fall

Soon after firing Acting Attorney General Sally Yates last night, President Trump removed the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The White House made it clear Yates was fired for ordering Justice Department lawyers not to defend the president’s controversial temporary travel ban, but no explanation was given for the sudden replacement of ICE’s Daniel Ragsdale.

Executive orders

In his first week in office, President Trump signed three executive orders addressing a range of immigration issues, including border security, law enforcement, national security and refugees. All of them related to promises Mr. Trump made repeatedly during his presidential campaign. We look at the actions, what they do, and their impact so far.

ISIS “lifeline”?

American diplomats in four majority-Muslim nations have sent cables this week to the State Department warning that U.S. allies fear jihadists will use President Trump’s temporary travel ban on people from seven nations, and all refugees, as a propaganda tool, and that Western installations in the Middle East could face retaliation.

Court shortlist

President Trump plans to announce his nominee for the Supreme Court tonight at the White House. Sources have confirmed to CBS News that Mr. Trump’s pick has come down to a choice between two judges with very different backgrounds. Both men, however, have one crucial thing in common.

Quebec terror

We’re learning more about the French-Canadian university student accused of killing and wounding worshipers inside a Quebec City mosque. Six people were killed in the gunman’s attack. Law enforcement sources tell CBS News they believe the man is a right-wing extremist.

Road rules

A new study suggests a lack of driver safety laws in some places could help explain the surging number of Americans killed in accidents. See how your state ranked in driving safety laws nationwide.
