School shooting
New details are emerging about the 14-year-old accused of opening fire at a South Carolina elementary school, wounding two 6-year-old students and a teacher. A family friend of the accused gunman says the teen was suspended for bringing a weapon to school, and had been home-schooled since.
Youth appeal
Hillary Clinton campaigns in Iowa today, on the first day of in-person, early voting in that state. Clinton may have won the nomination, but campaigning with former rival Bernie Sanders, she acknowledged there’s one thing he still has on her: younger voters.
Touting Trump
A Mississippi lawyer in a big white RV covered in the image of Donald Trump’s face is traveling the Sunshine State to build enthusiasm for the GOP presidential nominee. Mitch Tyner has “given up a lot” to drum up support for Trump and more importantly, he says, to register voters. He’s having great success in at least one of those efforts.
Shutdown dodged
Congress has managed to pass a Republican-sponsored spending bill that Democrats had previously blocked because it didn’t contain aid for Flint, Michigan to recover from its water crisis, officially averting a government shutdown.
