Trump debate

The first big Republican debate of the 2016 election cycle was not, as many were predicting, all about Donald Trump. "We don't want to make it the Donald Trump show," Fox News' Chris Wallace, one of the moderators, said. "But it is."

Taiwan braces

Winds were picking up today as the outer bands of Typhoon Soudelor hit Taiwan's capital city of Taipei, CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reports. Windows were taped up as Taiwan braced for the typhoon, and the government was evacuating residents, Doane reports. Fisherman had brought their boats to port, and the coast guard was patrolling the shore, offering training sessions on saving lives. President Obama declared the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, including the island of Saipan, a disaster area yesterday and ordered federal aid to help the U.S. territory in the aftermath of the typhoon.

Talking statues

Statues in Chicago have found their voices. More than 30 historical figures and monuments around the city have been outfitted with mobile technology that enables them to give their opinions. High-tech versions of Abraham Lincoln, William Shakespeare and others gave CBS News Correspondent Dean Reynolds a piece of their minds.

Black lives

Nearly a year ago, the nation watched as the city of Ferguson, Missouri erupted. Protesters came armed with a message, a message that would echo through the Missouri night sky in the days and weeks after Michael Brown's death. It was a message heard across the nation in more protests for other black Americans who died by police hands. "Black lives matter," they chanted, demanding America's attention. While demonstrators took to the streets of Ferguson and cities like New York and Los Angeles, a new generation of activists gathered both on the ground and online.

Forgiving student debt

At $1.2 trillion, America's student-debt load is considered at crisis levels, stymieing some young grads as they struggle with juggling repayment with other living expenses.Yet for some grads, there's a way to find relief: plans that peg repayment to income. Grads who are living on a below-average salary or are on a fixed income can apply for these plans, which provide debt forgiveness after two decades. For students in low-income majors such as social work and early education, this option can be a godsend.

Credit record

Looking at the financial history of prospective employees is common in the U.S., with nearly half of employers checking job applicant's' credit records. Some lawmakers want to change that. Sen. Elizabeth Warren this week reintroduced legislation that would ban the practice in most cases.

Manly eating disorders

Men in pursuit of an idealized physique -- six-pack abs, broad shoulders, bulging biceps and a slender waist -- are using more over-the-counter workout enhancing supplements in their quest to be both lean and muscular at the same time. For some, a growing reliance on supplements could be considered a new class of eating disorders.

Chenoweth's new project

Kristin Chenoweth is known for her charisma and charm both on stage and in front of the camera. But in one of her latest projects, she worked behind-the-scenes, serving as a producer on the new documentary "Twinsters," alongside a production team that also included former "Glee" star, Jenna Ushkowitz.
