North Korea nuclear threat, Trump family travel costs, and taxes
Nuclear threat
North Korea says it is “on the brink of war” with the U.S., and in an interview with CBS News, one of the nation’s senior officials warns Pyongyang is determined to go ahead with an expected nuclear test. As a U.S. Naval battle group sails toward the Korean Peninsula, Kim Jong Un’s regime is warning that if it feels threatened, it will not wait to make the second move.
Travel costs
When Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. travel the world on business, the Secret Service is with them -- and U.S. taxpayers foot the bill. Since January, hotel and car rental costs alone for the agents protecting the brothers have topped $190,000. One congressman tells CBS News the trips are “burning through taxpayer dollars at an unprecedented rate and stretching the Secret Service increasingly thin.”
Fair taxes?
As Americans prepare to file their income taxes this year, most see unfairness in the current tax system: 56 percent describe the income tax system as somewhat or quite unfair, while just over a third -- 37 percent -- think it’s quite or reasonably fair, according to a CBS News Poll.
Strong dollar
In a break from historical practice, President Trump this week openly called for a weaker dollar, the kind of jawboning on the nation’s currency that’s usually left to senior economic officials and Fed chairs. We explore why he wants to reduce the value of the greenback, along with its potential impact on the economy.
Titanic undertaking
The Titanic struck an iceberg in the Atlantic 105 years ago, sinking and taking 1,500 lives with it. It took scientists seven decades to find the wreckage, and now explorers are preparing to return to it for the first time in more than a decade -- before it disappears forever.
Culture change
A New York City taxi medallion, the license required to operate a yellow cab, was once worth far more than its weight in gold. Then Uber arrived on the scene. With numerous ride-hailing services now circulating around the city, the market for these once-coveted transportation permits has changed dramatically.
Future wheels
Concept cars draw big crowds at the New York International Auto Show, which opens to the public today. We visit the rarely-seen Lincoln design center in Dearborn, Michigan, to get an inside look at how the cars of the future become reality.
