“Birther” in chief?

For years Donald Trump was the public face of the so-called “birther movement,” leading the charge to prove President Obama was born outside the U.S. In recent months he’s refused to renounce that position, leading many to believe he stands by it. Now his campaign is trying to force the issue into the past.

Left behind

Many Americans saw a significant jump in their income last year, new Census data show, a welcome boost for what has been a glacially-slow economic recovery. But not everyone benefited, and some parts of the country saw distinctly weaker gains. We look at which groups are at risk of being left behind.

Kids and guns

Millions of American children either live in or visit homes where guns are present, but not than many families talk about firearm safety, a new survey of parents suggests. To reduce the risk, some pediatricians want to take a more active role in talking to parents about firearms, but would their advice be welcomed?

Visa loophole

In the 15 years since the 9/11 attacks, much effort has been made to keep the United States safe from terrorism, but one major gap in the country’s security framework remains wide open. Experts say people can still enter the country easily on short-term tourist or business visas, and then quietly never leave.

Truce tested

In what appears to be the first major test for the cease-fire in Syria, serious clashes have erupted just east of the capital city, Damascus. Bashar Assad’s army and rebels who hold the eastern suburbs of Ghouta are blaming each other for starting the fight, just as there appeared to be progress further north in Aleppo.

No real bargain

Generic drugs are supposed to be cheaper alternatives to increasingly-pricey prescription meds, but an analysis of more than 1,400 drugs over a five-year period found large, even explosive, price hikes for many generics. Could the trend spell the end of the one of the only restraints on escalating health care costs?

Tattoo trouble

When you get a tattoo, what’s being injected under your skin? While tattoos are on-track to become a more than $1 billion business by 2020, according to a market research firm, the FDA says consumer complaints are also increasing. The agency recently issued a warning about the risks associated with tattoo ink.

Reagan auction

Many personal items owned by President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, will be up for auction starting next week. The auction house Christie’s conservatively estimates the value of the collection at more than $2 million. We look at the stories behind the items set to hit the auction block.
