Dangerous heat

Sweltering conditions will impact millions of Americans today as a swath of dangerously hot temperatures stretches from the southern Plains to the East Coast. The extreme heat has not only been causing power outages and travel delays, but been downright unbearable -- and dangerous. CBSN correspondent Vladimir Duthiers reports the temperatures are already in the 80's and will only climb during the day.

Trumping Trump?

Iowa's top newspaper is calling on Donald Trump to bow out of the presidential race. The Des Moines Register says the billionaire cares more about promoting his brand than helping the country, reports CBS News correspondent Nancy Cordes. The newspaper's editors didn't mince words, saying Trump is "polluting the political waters and keeping qualified candidates from getting their message out."

Kasich runs

John Kasich enters a crowded field of Republican candidates today, becoming the 16th person to declare he is running for president. It will be an uphill climb for the Ohio governor, who's in the three percent range in national polls. But he does bring three distinct advantages to the race: He'll be the most popular sitting governor running, a presidential operation with more than $11 million in the bank, and a long resume that includes nearly 20 years in Congress, the statehouse in Ohio and time in the private sector. Here are five things to know about John Kasich.

Nuns vs. Katy Perry

A group of elderly nuns fighting to prevent singer Katy Perry from buying their former convent is facing a setback. The saga has pitted the nuns against the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which wants to sell the estate to the pop star. According to court documents, the nuns object to the sale for "obvious reasons." Yesterday, a judge denied their request to block the archdiocese from controlling the property, but as the nuns tell CBS News correspondent John Blackstone, they're not giving up.

Rising rents

As the U.S. economy continues to rebound from the worst slowdown since the Great Depression, one downside is how rising rents are putting the squeeze on consumers, with Millennials especially hard hit.

Policing mental illness

Crisis Intervention Team Policing programs are designed to improve the way law enforcement responds to people suffering from mental illness. CIT is a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1988 by Lt. Sam Cochran in Memphis, Tennessee. So far, around 3,000 law enforcement agencies across the country have sent at least one officer to participate in the 40-hour training course.

Treating Alzheimer's

Genes aren't the only culprit causing Alzheimer's disease. As Alzheimer's researchers gain greater understanding of the disease, there's a growing sense that developing effective treatments will need to take into account a mixture of factors including genetics, immune system and lifestyle. And starting those treatments years sooner may be key.

"Sharknado 3" - More ridiculous

Screenwriter Thunder Levin had one goal in mind when writing the script for the third incarnation of "Sharkando" -- for it to be as "ridiculous" and "unexpected" as possible. Levin, who wrote both "Sharknado" (2013) and "Sharknado 2: The Second One" (2014), told CBS News, "We wanted to open it up a bit. We wanted to make it bigger."
