Bob Simon

Bob Simon, the longtime "60 Minutes" correspondent and legendary CBS News foreign reporter, died suddenly last night in a car accident in New York City. The award-winning newsman was 73. Over a 47-year career at CBS News, Simon earned more than 40 major awards, including 27 Emmys, believed to be the most ever for a field reporter, and four Peabody Awards. Simon's career took him through most major overseas conflicts, from the late 1960s to the present. He joined CBS News in 1967. But Simon's career in war reporting was extensive, beginning in Vietnam. During the early days of the Persian Gulf War in 1991, Simon was imprisoned and tortured by the Iraqi army along with three CBS News colleagues. Tributes to Simon have been pouring in.

ISIS photos

CBS News has new information about the message sent to the family of Kayla Mueller by her ISIS captors. U.S. officials told CBS News national security Correspondent David Martin the email received by Kayla's parents, Carl and Marsha Mueller, contained three photos of their daughter's body.

Qatar murder punishment

The Pennsylvania family of a murder victim faced an extraordinary question: Should the man who authorities say killed 40-year-old Jennifer Brown in Qatar die for the crime? CBS News correspondent Anna Werner spoke with Brown's sisters in a story you'll see only on "CBS This Morning."

Perilous journey

So desperate are Syrians to flee the war in their country that they are jamming rickety boats, known as ghost ships, bound for Europe. CBS News correspondent Holly Williams reports the journey, in the Mediterranean Sea, is perilous. The United Nations refugee agency says more than 300 people died attempting a similar crossing from Africa.

Cell phone videos and police

A cell phone video is driving a federal lawsuit in Oregon, where a Portland woman is suing the city. Carrie Medina says police took her phone after she used it to record and broadcast the arrest of a man two years ago. CBS News Correspondent Ben Tracy reports on the rocky history between police and civilian cell phones.

Cola wars

When most people think about rivalries in the carbonated beverage industry, they think of the "cola wars," the never-ending battle for market supremacy between Coca-Cola and PepsiCo especially, as well as Dr. Pepper Snapple and a host of other smaller rivals. However, reports CBS News MoneyWatch, that doesn't tell the whole story.

No answer

Running for president is perhaps, more than anything else, an exercise in answering questions: Who are you? What do you believe? How will you govern? Sometimes though, a presidential candidate (or potential candidate) decides that providing an answer could be more trouble than it's worth, and executes that most time-tested of political maneuvers: the dodge.

Marine's best friend

Spike is a member of the K-9 patrol with the Virginia Capitol Police. Sweet as he is tough, Spike is also a heartbreaker. He didn't mean to be - he just got caught in a love triangle. At the State Capitol in Richmond yesterday, Spike was reunited with U.S. Marine Jared Heine. CBS News correspondent Chip Reid reports they hadn't seen each other in three years. They were a team in Afghanistan, where Spike's job was to sniff out bombs - risking his life every day to keep Heine and his buddies alive.

Uncommon Common

With two Grammys, a Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination and a hip-hop career spanning more than two decades, Common is still making big plans. He credits his mother for inspiring the name but, as "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King reports, his talents have proven to be anything but common.
