This Morning from CBS News: Dec. 22, 2014
Cops killer
The NYPD has traced the steps of a gunman who killed two of its officers to Baltimore, where he shot his ex-girlfriend earlier on Saturday. CBS News correspondent Don Dahler reports police say the killer may have acted out of vengeance over recent deaths of black men during encounters with police. A son of one of the slain officers posted a tribute to his father on Facebook.
Blame game
Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani told CBS New York that pointing fingers and assigning blame, particularly against the current mayor, is not helping an already tenuous situation in the city. NAACP President Cornell William Brooks said, on CBS's "Face the Nation," that it is "simply not fair" to blame politicians like New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder for the deaths of the two NYPD officers.
Havana report
Scott Pelley, in Havana for "60 Minutes," reports a truce has been declared along a front line of the Cold War. After 18 months of secret talks and an old fashioned exchange of captured spies, President Obama surprised the world Wednesday, reestablishing relations with Cuba, in a deal guaranteed by the Vatican. It happened because of accidents of history. A second-term president doesn't have to worry about losing Florida. For the first time in 2,000 years, the pope is Latin American. And the current Castro in power seems somewhat more inclined to evolution than revolution.
Cyber retaliation?
The White House says Mr. Obama will review a range of options to hit back at North Korea for the cyber attack against Sony Pictures. CBS News correspondent Julianna Goldman reports the U.S. believes North Koreans are using infrastructure and assets in other countries to stage its cyberattacks.
Inflatable incubators
British design student James Roberts' remarkable invention could help save a generation of babies in war-ravaged Syria. He was inspired to create inflatable incubators for premature babies after watching part of a documentary about British-Syrian doctor Rola Hallam and the plight of Syria's youngest victims. CBS News correspondent Charlie D'Agata talked to Roberts and watched him meet Dr. Hallam.
Falling oil
Record U.S. oil production is driving global supply up and prices down to less than $60 a barrel, but many in the industry fear this boom could ultimately end in a bust. CBS News correspondent Vicente Arenas reports that oil-dependent communities like Seminole, Oklahoma fear tough times ahead.
When is a "deal" really a deal?
Everyone loves a bargain, but a "great" deal could quickly become a "not-so-good" purchase if you allow yourself to get caught up in the holiday shopping frenzy. Whether it's in stores or online, retailers have been bombarding shoppers this holiday season with sales, coupons and deals. But which of these deals are the real bargain -- or too good to be true?
Creature of habit
President Obama arrived in Hawaii late Friday evening for a two-week vacation to Hawaii, an annual tradition for the first family. Mr. Obama was looking forward to the chance to rest and relax with his wife, Michelle, daughters Sasha and Malia, and dogs Bo and Sunny, even if he can never be fully away from his responsibilities as commander in chief. Here are three things to know about the president's vacation.
Digital handwriting
This year, the greeting card industry expects Americans to write and send more than a billion and half Christmas cards. It may be the only time some people practice handwriting in the digital age, but CBS News correspondent John Blackstone reports on companies that are betting big on rewriting the future.
Schieffer's holiday verse
"Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer writes a verse to wish all a merry Christmas say goodbye to 2014, a year he is clearly done with.
