The gunman
A picture is emerging of the Orlando gunman, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, who was born in New York to Afghan parents. Married for a second time and with a 3-year-old son, we take a closer look at his background -- including some possible warning signs.
Gunman's father
The Orland gay club gunman's father has well-known anti-American views and is an ideological supporter of the Afghan Taliban. A new message posted by the father on Facebook early this morning also makes it clear he could have passed strong views on the gay community on to his son.
Not just hate
Mixed amid the chaos and confusion in Orlando were stories of heroism and heart. Instincts kicked in for some people who escaped the gunfire, and they risked their own safety to help save the lives of others. We hear from a man who saw a victim with multiple gunshot wounds, and felt he had to turn back.
Paul's predicament
Paul Ryan has put himself in an impossible position. After withholding his support for Donald Trump for weeks, the speaker of the House endorsed him just as many others stepped away. In the wake of the country's worst mass shooting in history, Trump and Ryan are again at odds.
Alternate reality?
Will Rahn argues that, in the wake of the Orlando mass shooting, Donald Trump's casual relationship with the truth has comes out again. Everyone knows that politicians lie, says Rahn, "but Trump's real innovation is to not lie so much as create an alternate reality." Can Trump "keep getting away with having his own facts?"

With the games now only weeks away, the country's battered economy is seriously hampering preparations.
