The leader of the Chicago street gang Four Corner Hustlers has been sentenced to life in prison for racketeering conspiracy charges involving multiple murders.

Labar Spann, 47, was convicted in Chicago on charges of racketeering conspiracy, two murders in aid of racketeering, and extortion. Jurors found Spann committed four premeditated murders as part of the racketeering conspiracy, including the killings of Rudy Rangel, Willie Woods, and George King in 200 and Maximillion McDaniel in 2000.

He was sentenced on Monday in federal court, with life in prison being the mandatory sentence.

Prosecutors say the Four Corner Hustlers operated mainly in West Garfield Park and North Lawndale, as well as in the former LeClair Courts public housing development on the city's Southwest Side. They say the gang sold drugs, robbed and extorted rival dealers, and used violence and intimidation to prevent victims and witnesses from going to the police.

Spann was first indicted in 2017 along with eight other members of the Four Corner Hustlers and two additional people. All were convicted.

We would like to thank the people of Lake Elsinore for all their support," the statement said, in part. "Celeste was a beautiful, strong girl who loved to sing and dance. Every Friday night was movie night and we spent wonderful times together. We love her very much and she always told us that she loved us. We miss her deeply."

"All we want is Justice for Celeste," the statement said.

Notes, candles and flowers at a memorial for slain teen Celeste Rivas Hernandez, who was found dead in the trunk of a Tesla in a Hollywood tow yard on Sept. 25, 2025 in Lake Elsinore, California.

The criminal complaint also included special circumstances allegations of murder of a witness, as well as a special allegation that Burke personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a sharp instrument, to commit the crime in April 2025.

Hochman said the first-degree murder charge could carry the maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

"The determination on whether or not the district attorney's office will seek the death penalty will be made at a later time," Hochman said.

Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

Former Mayor Richard M. Daley was hospitalized earlier this month after suffering a stroke, but has since returned home and is doing fine, according to his former press secretary.

Daley's former press secretary, Jacquelyn Heard, confirmed that Daley suffered a relatively minor stroke earlier this month, and has returned home after a few days in the hospital.

Heard said she spoke to Daley on Tuesday, and he was doing fine. She confirmed initial reports by the Chicago Sun-Times that Daley is undergoing rehabilitation, but is out of danger.

Daley, who turns 84 on Friday, and was the longest-serving mayor in Chicago history, also was hospitalized while in office in 2000, after suffering chest pains and hypertension. At the time, Daley revealed that he hadn't had a physical exam in 10 years.

Daley and his late wife, Maggie, were hospitalized together in December 2002 after both passed out from flu-related dehydration.

In 2014, he spent several days in the intensive care unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after becoming disoriented during a business trip.

In 2022, Daley was hospitalized for nearly two weeks – first at Northwestern and then at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab – after suffering a "neurological event."

Daley served as mayor from 1989 until 2011 – the longest stretch of any Chicago mayor. His father, Richard J. Daley, served almost as long, from 1955 until 1976, when he died of a heart attack.

A couple from Tulsa, Oklahoma, is recreating a trip they made a quarter-century ago in a century-old car.

Kicking things off at the symbolic start of Route 66 at Navy Pier, they didn't have to travel very far for the adventure.

Where Route 66 begins, so, too, does a love story. Ed and Jackie Fogle got married and immediately put in the miles.

"Let's just do Route 66. We grew up on it, didn't we?" Ed said.

They hit the road for their honeymoon from Chicago to Santa Monica in their 1959 Cadillac convertible, with the top down every inch of the way, Ed said.

As Route 66 celebrates 100 years, the Fogles mark a milestone of their own — 25 years of marriage this June. Now, they're ready for Route 66 again.

"But this time, let's do it in a 100-year-old, what's called an orphan car," Ed said. "It's a 1926 Hupmobile."

So, how many miles does the car have on it? Well, that's a mystery, as, according to Ed, the speedometer, odometer, and fuel gauge don't work.

The Fogles towed it in a trailer from Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Chicago with help from a friend and mechanic, Tom Lord.

Lord doesn't feel like a third wheel if the fogles didn't really need him. The 100-year-old Hupmobile had the hiccups.

"It was okay right down to idle, and then it went over," Ed said.

Lord tinkers and consults with a fellow mechanic on the phone, and the carburetor that appeared to be the culprit. Ed arranges an Uber trip for car parts, and Jackie tries to enjoy this first unexpected bump in the road.

"The mechanics didn't need my help, so I'll just look at the beautiful scenery here at Navy Pier," she said, jokingly.

The adventure didn't start the way they planned, but whether it's thousands of miles or just a few feet, they push through it together.

"That's going to be good enough."

The good news is that despite the setback, the Fogles finally got the car started and have hit the road on Route 66.

It's that time of year when many college seniors graduate and head out into the real world looking for jobs.

But are there jobs to be found right now?

Chicago-based career expert John Challenger offers advice based on a new report on the job outlook for grads and breaks down what lies ahead for those who will be walking across the stage in a few weeks.

"There's evidence that the hiring outlook is rebounding," he said. "The Class of 2026 is projected to see a 5.6% increase in employment, with 33% of employers increasing hires, according to a study by NACE, the National Association of College and Employers."

Despite the job market being a hit or miss in the last couple of months, Challenger said that large employers and sectors like information, engineering services, and construction, along with other professional services, are the best places to look for jobs.

Challenger also touched on how artificial intelligence is playing a role in the current job market.

"AI is an interesting question. In their report, they reported AI is raising the bar for entry-level talent. So routine tasks, coding, you know, might very well might begin to see some changes, but AI fluency, data literacy, critical thinking, and more, probably more important than anything else, just strong human skills … the ability to communicate, to adapt to an environment are some of the most important soft skills that employers are looking for," he said.

Challenger said the same report mentions that internship employment is up by 4%. He said that those internships students may have had in their sophomore or junior year are important for getting into companies upon graduation.

The Chicago Transit Authority is ending contracts with at least two security companies that have been patrolling trains and stations, and replacing them with police patrols.

CTA officials said this decision will strengthen its system by taking money previously spent on unarmed guards and using it to pay armed Chicago police officers to patrol the trains.

The CTA first contracted with the private security firms in 2022. Now, four years later, the contracts have been canceled.

But the affected security companies said the decision came as a surprise, calling it "abrupt" and "devastating," and claiming they thought their contracts were being extended another year.

"As we grow our resources, we also have to be strategic and smart about what is the right resource on CTA, and that was the decision here, not to continue to add funds to that contract and to move forward with other resources," said CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen.

Leerhsen said that the contract will expire when all of the funds are used.

"Safety is our top priority," said Mayor Brandon Johnson.

The CTA promised a 75% increase in police patrols on trains and buses in a safety plan submitted to the Trump Administration in March. With officers in CPD's public transit section working more hours, doubling off-duty officers patrolling the system, and Cook County Sheriff's Police officers working rail lines for 4,400 hours a month.

Agency officials said that the increase would come from an uptick in Chicago Police Department hours dedicated to CTA as well as a partnership with the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

The safety plan stipulated that these armed officers would conduct ride-along missions on bus routes with high crime rates. They would also board and inspect trains.

Last week, the CTA broke down how it would spend new Regional Transportation Authority funding for enhanced security. It would include $20 million to cover the expanded CPD patrols from 99 officers to 180, $10 million to increase the number of K-9 units from 164 to 200, and $12 million for the added sheriff's deputies. That plan is still being considered.

When asked if any of the teen takeovers factored into the consideration, he replied, "It's a small segment of the larger population that ruin it for others, but like I've said repeatedly, it's about accountability and opportunity."

The public input period for the RTA spending plan began on Monday.

CBS News Chicago has asked the CTA if money freed up by canceling its security contracts is reflected in the RTA spending plan figures.

One rider who spoke to CBS News Chicago said he was skeptical that a uniform and a badge would make a difference when it came to preventing crime. But another rider, Josh White, said he approved of the move.

"I think that's a step in the right direction, absolutely," White said, "because the police officers have more authority, and they can actually get more involved — versus a security company, they may not feel like they can really, you know, do something that a police officer can do — you know, make an arrest, or like get physical or contact someone when someone is bringing danger to other people on the train."

Meanwhile, the companies with which the CTA contracted said they learned about the end of their contracts abruptly and with little notice.

A spokesperson for Monterrey Security said the company was notified on Friday that the last shift for its 250 unarmed guards would be that very night.

A Monterrey subcontractor, Kate's Security, said, "The CTA's abrupt decision is devastating for our company."

The union representing some of those unarmed guards says the CTA blamed the ending of their contracts on "non-appropriation of funds."

CTA officials said the reallocated money is going to resources "better equipped to help keep riders and staff safe."

In a statement, the Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus condemned the CTA's decision to end its contract for unarmed guards.

"The decision to remove these dedicated public safety professionals with zero warning is not just a logistical failure; it is a direct blow to the economic stability of Black-owned firms and the families they support," said Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th), who chairs the Black Caucus. "At a time when we are fighting for equity and investment in our neighborhoods, it is appalling to see the CTA unilaterally discard a workforce that has been on the front lines of transit safety." zero warning is not just a logistical failure; it is a direct blow to the economic stability of Black-owned firms and the families they support," said Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th), who chairs the Black Caucus. "At a time when we are fighting for equity and investment in our neighborhoods, it is appalling to see the CTA unilaterally discard a workforce that has been on the front lines of transit safety."

CBS News Chicago reached out to CTA and CPD on the enhanced safety plan timeline, but has yet to hear back.

Police searching for suspects after CTA passenger attacked

The contract update comes as police search for the group they said beat a passenger on a CTA train in the Loop last week.

The incident happened on April 14, just after 9:30 p.m. in the 600 block of South State Street.

Chicago police are searching for the nine people above accused of beating a passenger on a CTA train in the Loop on April 14.

Herrera appeared to hold up that pepper spray canister again before getting away.

Herrera was out on electronic monitoring after being accused of stealing a van full of dogs outside of a pet groomer in Lincoln Park.

Prosecutors had said he dumped the van in an alley in Lakeview, where owners were reunited with their pups. Prosecutors did not ask to have Herrera detained, something the judge expressed concern about at the time, noting Herrera had also previously been accused of stealing an ambulance in Gary, Indiana.

According to court records, Herrera is a five-time convicted felon for theft offenses.

Because prosecutors did not request Herrera be held in jail, he was released on electronic monitoring.

Days after that, a warrant was issued for Herrera's arrest, after the Cook County Chief Judge's office said he was caught tampering with his electronic monitoring device in less than 24 hours.

He was accused of trying to cut the first monitoring device off. Authorities gave him a new one, which they said he tampered with again before he disappeared, not having charged the bracelet.

A week later, police arrested Herrera and accused him of more crimes; this time charged with aggravated battery for the pepper spray attack, robbery for allegedly taking a navigation system out of a victim's car, burglary for stealing another person's credit card, and trespassing involving another vehicle.

When he appeared before a judge on Tuesday, he was ordered held in jail while he awaits trial. He's due back in court on Friday.

For the second year in a row, organizers have cancelled the Cinco de Mayo parade in the Little Village neighborhood, over concerns about federal immigration enforcement efforts.

"This decision comes in light of the challenges our Mexican community continues to face under this administration. Many families are experiencing fear and uncertainty due to increased immigration enforcement actions and the ongoing threat of raids," the Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce and Casa Puebla said in a statement. "Given these circumstances, members of our community have understandably withdrawn from public gatherings and celebrations. There is nothing to celebrate."

Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce and Casa Puebla president Hector Escobar said the unfortunate decision is costly for businesses along Cermak Road that rely on the parade.

"We lose between $6 and $8 million on this weekend for this celebration and parade," he said.

Martin Flores, owner of Wagner's Bakery, said the parade has boosted business for the shop in years past.

"People who hadn't been here before saw the shop, came to the parade, and popped in to buy some bread," he said in Spanish.

But more than a loss of business, Flores said the decision to cancel the parade is saddening because of the lack of joy the parade normally brings.

Local officials and restaurateurs in the community said the cancellation will impact businesses on what was meant to be a celebratory day.

Handmade tortillas have been a staple since 1989 at La Casa de Samuel in Little Village. Arturo Linares now runs the restaurant started by his grandfather.

He said, like so many neighborhood businesses, customers just aren't dining in as they did before the Trump administration's enhanced immigration enforcement.

"Not just us, everyone is getting impacted," Linares said. "Everyone is scared. Everyone is tense right now."

That trepidation felt throughout the community is in part why Hector Escobar, president of the Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce and Casa Puebla and one of the organizers of the annual Cinco de Mayo parade, cancelled the vibrant celebration for the second straight year.

"It's not about money, it's about the safety of the community," he said. "It's sad because it's a very cultural event that's gone on for 40 plus years."

Escobar said community feedback influenced the decision to cancel the upcoming parade that celebrates Mexico's victory over the French army in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The triumph over the better-equipped and much larger French troops was an enormous emotional boost for Mexican soldiers led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza.

In 2024, the parade of more than 5,000 participants was interrupted when shots were fired on the parade route. At least 27 people were arrested. Police said the shooting was a feud between rival gangs.

Community leaders in Little Village said they were surprised to see the parade cancelled this year, as ICE activity has not been as intense.

"It's unfortunate that this administration has traumatized the neighborhood to where we don't want to celebrate because we are afraid, and also the business are afraid," said Baltazar Enriquez, president of the Little Village Community Council. "People come to the restaurants, they fill up the neighborhood, they go shopping, and it's going to have a negative effect on the businesses."

Elias Cepeda, with Pilsen Defense Access, said his group continues to track suspected U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in Chicago, which remains ongoing.

"The federal government has changed a bit and decreased in recent months. However, they still continue," he said. "It's very understandable that people are still scared, not only because of what happened in 2025 at a really large scale, but what is still happening now in dribs and drabs, but in ways that deeply terrorize families that are affected."

Casa de Samuel is one of those businesses that normally rely on the large parade crowds.

"They want to have a good time while they're eating, so they come here usually," Linares said. "That's going to change because of what's going on, and it's a little bit unfortunate."

"Next year we don't know, we hope next year it will change, but at this point we have to be very careful what we do," Escobar said.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is seen as a celebration of Mexican American culture, stretching back to the 1800s in California. Festivities typically include parades, street food, block parties, mariachi competitions, and baile folklórico, or folkloric ballet, with whirling dancers wearing bright, ruffled dresses and their hair tied with shiny ribbons.

The day is often mistaken by Americans for Mexican Independence Day, which is in September.

Two people were injured in an explosion and fire at a chemical plant in Ottawa, Illinois.

The Ottawa Fire Department said they were called to Coogee Chemical at 1501 Titanium Drive just before 8 a.m. for a reported explosion with injuries.

When they arrived a short time later, they found smoke coming from a structure on the property, which houses chemicals that are reactive to water.

Two employees were hurt in the explosion, the fire department said. One was still near the site of the explosion, while the other got themself out of the building and into a nearby office building.

Fire officials said they quickly identified the fire as a magnesium fire. They were able to find the hurt employee near the site and took both injured workers to a nearby hospital for treatment at about 8:25 a.m. Officials did not share information about their conditions.

Water cannot be used to fight a magnesium fire, so firefighters used dry chemical agents to extinguish the flames. The fire was brought under control by 8:15 a.m., and was contained to its original area. Fire officials said there was no further damage to the surrounding structure.

Fire officials said the building sustained minimal damage and Coogee Chemical has stopped plant operations pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.

Illinoi OSHA is assisting with the investigation. Fire officials said early findings suggest the explosion may have been caused by an equipment failure as magnesium was transferred to a storage container.

Magnesium can ignite when exposed oxygen; while the reaction produces magnesium oxide – which is safe and can be used to treat medical conditions like migraines and constipation – the exothermic reaction is strong and can produce explosions and magnesium fires. Magnesium fires are extremely dangerous, producing temperatures in excess of 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. They are difficult to put out and react violently to water, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

Fire officials said the initial investigation found oxygen sensors used in the plant's magnesium transfer, which is usually transferred using argon gas to prevent oxygen exposure, may have malfunctioned and the subsequent exposure to oxygen may have caused the explosion.

The investigation remains ongoing. No other injuries were reported.

Residents in one part of Chicago's Noble Square neighborhood say they've been dealing with cars careening off the Kennedy Expressway and crashing into their front yard for decades, and the state won't help.

One homeowner who spoke to CBS News Chicago Investigators said she's been raising concerns for more than 20 years to state and local officials, with no result.

Allison Stirzak has a patchwork of fencing between her front yard and thousands of cars that go zooming by daily on the Kennedy.

"This is what I'm living with and this is what I'm trying to prevent," she said. "Every time we fix it, another car hits it, and they usually don't have insurance or they drive off."

Earlier this month, she found an SUV wedged between her front fence and a massive light pole, leaving a gaping hole behind.

"I could walk onto the highway for about a week. IDOT never came out to fix it," she said.

Stirzak said the proximity to traffic makes her nervous "every time."

She and her other neighbors say their condo association can't afford to pay roughly $4,000 to fix the fence every single time there's a crash.

"I would bet a ton of money that it will happen again by the end of summer," said neighbor Megan Murphy.

They just want some protection. They say it's not just pedestrians who are in danger, but drivers too.

"Cars have barreled right through here. A man passed away. He came through the fencing, hit the tree," Strizak said. "I mean, I've been asking for 22 years to have some help."

She said she's gotten empty promises from her aldermen and state lawmakers over the year, and the Illinois Department of Transportation told her it could take as long as seven years to come up with a permanent solution.

CBS News Chicago Investigators reached out to IDOT and got a swift response. A spokesperson said crews would be out soon to fix the chain link fence there, and they were. But IDOT said they will have to conduct an analysis for a long-term solution and to determine if a "roadside barrier" is warranted. Neighbors desperately hope it is.

"I would say if they could just think about how scary and… jarring it is, quite frankly," said Murphy. "it's only a matter of time until something happens."

IDOT said the analysis to determine whether they can put up a barrier should be completed in a few weeks.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Former Mayor Richard M. Daley is back at home, nearly two weeks after he was hospitalized for what a spokesperson described as a "neurological event."

Daley was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital on June 8, after he started feeling out of sorts while at home with his daughter, Nora, according to his former press secretary, Jacquelyn Heard.

He was released from Northwestern five days later, and then went to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab "for a short stay," according to Heard.

Tuesday morning, Heard confirmed Daley had been released from Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and was back at home.

Terman explained Daley experienced a "neurological event," and he is expected to fully recover, according to Heard.

"Daley and his family deeply appreciate the outpouring of concern and prayers and again want to thank members of the CFD as well as Northwestern doctors, nurses and other staff," Heard said previously.

Daley, 80, served as mayor from 1989 until 2011 – the longest stretch of any Chicago mayor. His father, Richard J. Daley, served almost as long, from 1955 until 1976.

Before being elected mayor, Daley served as an Illinois state senator from 1972 until 1980, and as Cook County State's Attorney from 1981 until 1989. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1983 -- when he and incumbent Jane Byrne lost the Democratic primary to Harold Washington.

But Daley won the race for mayor in a special election in 1989 to finish the late Mayor Washington's term -- taking over for Acting Mayor Eugene Sawyer, whom he defeated in the Democratic primary. He was reelected five more times, in 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, and 2007.

In 2011, Mayor Daley surprised many when he decided not to seek reelection. Since retiring from politics, he has maintained a fairly low-key profile.

From 2011:

10 memorable highlights of Mayor Daley's reign

Some of Mayor Daley's most colorful quotes

Daley was also hospitalized in 2014 after becoming disoriented on a plane on the way back from Arizona.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Former Mayor Richard M. Daley has been released from the hospital, five days after suffering what a spokesperson described as a "neurological event," and he is now being treated at a rehab facility.

Daley was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital last Wednesday, after he started feeling out of sorts while at home with his daughter, Nora, according to his former press secretary, Jacquelyn Heard.

He was released from Northwestern on Monday night, and his physician, Dr. Eric Terman, said Daley is now at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab "for a short stay," according to Heard.

Terman explained Daley experienced a "neurological event" last Wednesday, and he is expected to fully recover, according to Heard.

"Daley and his family deeply appreciate the outpouring of concern and prayers and again want to thank members of the CFD as well as Northwestern doctors, nurses and other staff," Heard said.

Updated 4:07 p.m. on 02/02/2014

(CBS) -- Former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and could remain there for a few more days.

Katten Muchin Rosenman law firm spokeswoman Jacquelyn Heard told CBS 2 that Daley will remain hospitalized at least through Monday and possibly until mid-week until all tests are complete.

Heard says that it is still unknown what is ailing Daley but that, "it doesn't appear to be anything major."

Daley was taken to the hospital after returning from Arizona Friday evening, according to a statement from Rick Jascula, a long-time friend of the Daley family.

While on the way back from Arizona, Daley reportedly became disoriented on the plane. His family had an ambulance waiting for him at the plane when it landed. The mayor walked off the plane and was brought directly to the hospital.

Heard says when she left the ICU at Northwestern Saturday night, Daley was resting - watching TV with his family and eager to get on with things and get out of the hospital.

As for those reports that he may have suffered stroke-like symptoms, she says that's the first she's heard of that.

She says Daley had said, "'I don't quite feel well,' not that his head hurt or anything."

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says, "My thoughts and prayers are with him."

Durbin says he and Daley are members of the same parish and Daley's name was mentioned in prayers this morning.

"We're pulling for him and wishing him the best," Durbin says. "He's a tough cookie and I think he'll bounce back and I'm looking forward to it."

At the age of 71, Mayor Daley has an incredibly busy schedule. He is a partner at Katten Muchin law firm, on the board of Coca Cola, a business consultant traveling around the world and he lectures at the University of Chicago.
