As global tensions continue, even as a ceasefire is being reported, local faith leaders are calling for prayer.

On Saturday, the Archbishop of Baltimore invited the community to come together for a vigil for peace outside the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.

"At a time when the threat of expanded conflict and the suffering of innocent lives weigh heavily upon the conscience of the world, we are reminded that the deliberate targeting of civilians and the escalation of war can never be morally justified," Archbishop Lori said.

In a statement, the archbishop echoed a call from Pope Leo XIV, urging people to turn to prayer, saying true peace starts in the human heart.

He's also asking parishes across the archdiocese to open their doors and hold their own vigils in solidarity with Catholics around the world.

Rebecca Francis, an attendee, said the service is a good way to bring people together in a difficult time.

"There's so much going on in the world, and there's so much very distressing news that's out there, and when Archbishop Lori said let's get together and pray about it...I believe prayer is very powerful, so I just wanted to be here," said Francis.

This comes as Pope Leo XIV strongly criticized the war in Iran on Saturday.

After nearly 10 days of keeping a close watch on the Orion Spacecraft as it completed the longest journey from Earth in history, hundreds gathered at Reid Wiseman's high school alma mater to watch and welcome his crew's return to Earth.

"All that he's brought — the whole crew — to the world. It's just been a really binding experience," said Adam Crowley, a friend of Wiseman.

Baltimore County residents, especially, feel a personal connection to Wiseman.

"I knew from many years ago that he was going to do something earth-shattering," said Brian Frank, another friend of Wiseman.

Friends, parents, and students were humbled by the history that now flows through Dulaney High School's doors.

"It's pretty cool," said N'damona Wheeler, a Dulaney High School student. "It's a little unreal, but it shows that people that can do great things are just people from where you came from."

Wiseman has kept up with his Dulaney family over the years, sharing special moments in space with them and offering them advice.

Reid Wiseman offers words of encouragement to the youth

Before returning to Earth, Wiseman checked in with Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, leaving a message for students looking to reach for the stars:

"The students of today, they've got to be willing to fail. They've got to be willing to take some risks in their school. Straight A's, that might be important to some, but really expanding your horizons, going out and doing things that are difficult, things that scare you, things that you might have to try a few times before you get them right. That's all well and good, and that's a huge part of the learning process. And one of my biggest takeaways from life is, it's not how well you succeed, it's how well you fail. And when you have a tough spot, you've got to get up and get back on the horse and keep on going. And I think that's so critical for the youth across the world today. Just keep driving and keep trying and keep innovating."

Despite the allure of soaring through space, Wiseman's friends say he's really just a down-to-earth guy.

"Reid will be the same person that he was, and then he'll come back and be that same amazing, humble, kind, loving persona, and it's amazing even though he's been to the moon and back," said Kristin Chottiner, a friend of Wiseman.

After this successful mission, many spectators say they can't wait until the next one and witness us set foot on the moon once again.

Happy Saturday, Maryland!

Expect a quiet weather weekend with temperatures near normal in the afternoons. Much warmer air builds in by the middle of the weekend.

Weekend outlook

A cold front moved through early on Saturday morning, producing a few light showers before daybreak. After the front, high pressure quickly builds in, bringing quiet weather for Saturday and Sunday.

Winds for much of the weekend will be coming from the north, meaning slightly cooler air. Saturday will be the warmer of the two weekend days but not by much. Afternoon highs this weekend peak in the 60s to low 70s. Thanks to high pressure in control, we'll have a mix of sun and clouds overhead but days stay dry.

It'll be breezy from time to time this weekend, as well.

Warming up

At some point on Sunday, our wind direction will shift. Through the day Saturday, our winds will come from the north. Once winds start to become more southerly, that brings in warmer air.

Sunday night into Monday will be warmer than Saturday night. Monday morning we'll wake up in the 50s. With a breezy southerly wind in play, that afternoon peaks in the upper 70s to low 80s across the board. A few showers are possible in the evening hours Monday.

Winds may not be as strong Tuesday but the direction of the winds - southwesterly - will remain pretty consistent. This continues the flow of warm air into the mid-Atlantic. Tuesday reaches the mid-80s before Wednesday and Thursday surge close to 90°. High temperature records may be broken or tied on either (or both) of those two warmest days.

Friday into the following weekend "cools" back down into the 80s.

Mainly dry days ahead

High pressure keeps our weather dry for the weekend.

A warm front moves through the state Sunday into Monday morning. Later in the day, we could see a few showers but other than that, our rain chance this upcoming week remains low. Each day features a minor chance for showers. Our highest rain chance this week is Friday into the next weekend, when a few storms are also possible.

Federal immigration enforcement operations in Baltimore are coming under fire again, as protesters gathered in front of the George H. Fallon Federal Building on Friday.

The protesters were specifically protesting the detainment of dozens of women, who were once confined inside U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) holding rooms in Baltimore.

They also decried the conditions of the holding rooms, which have long been denounced by advocates and lawmakers.

Detained for days

When 40 women came for a required check-in with ICE over a two-day period in March, they were detained in holding rooms, according to the People's Power Assembly (PPA).

The group heard about it from other activists in Washington state.

"They do regular visits with detainees in ICE facilities and that's how they heard about this story, they brought it to us," said PPA organizer Andrew Mayton.

Mayton said the women have no criminal histories and were just doing something required by law.

"They have active cases in immigration. They're following everything through the legal means of becoming a permanent resident," he said.

PPA and other activists have been in touch with the women's families and say they were transferred to other facilities the day before members of Maryland's Congressional delegation visited on March 9.

Nearly half of the women have been deported, according to Mayton, and those still in the country have been traced to facilities in Washington and Arizona.

One of the protesters read a statement from one of the women's loved ones on Friday.

"On the very day she was detained, she told the officers, ' My daughter is at school, ' to which they replied callously, ' Your daughter doesn't exist here," the protester read.

Aside from PPA, the protesters also represented the International League of People's Struggle (ILPS) Baltimore DMV, International Migrants Alliance, International Women's Alliance, and Defend Migrants Alliance.

Holding room conditions

The holding rooms' conditions continue to be a big topic of concern.

Protesters on Friday contend the women had no access to water, toilets, or menstrual products.

The conditions inside have been decried as inhumane for more than a year, especially when a video in January allegedly showed crowded conditions inside.

At the time, ICE blamed weather conditions for delaying transfers.

WJZ has reached out to ICE about the women's detainment, but there's been no response.

However, ICE has long defended its holding rooms, saying in a previous statement, "The continued fixation by the media to portray ICE processing centers in a negative light is both misleading and irresponsible."

A federal judge in March granted motions in a class action lawsuit against ICE's Baltimore holding room operations, which limited how many people can be held and established some standards, such as how often the rooms need to be cleaned.

The Maryland Attorney General's Office has also filed a lawsuit against ICE, asking for documents in its investigation into the holding rooms.

Security officers who work in Baltimore-owned buildings in the city's Harbor East community went on strike against their employer, Abacus Corporation, on Thursday, alleging unfair labor practices.

The non-union city and commercial contracted officers, who have been trying to unionize, walked off the job for a one-day strike.

Leaders of SEUI 32 BJ, the largest property service worker union in the country, said charges filed in 2025 and 2026 on behalf of workers include allegations of discrimination, coercion, and firings for participation in union activities. The union has 1,700 members in Baltimore, and a total of 190,000 members across 12 states.

In a statement shared with WJZ, a spokesperson for Abacus Corporation said the union's claims are "factually incorrect and meant to mislead the public."

"The charges filed by SEIU are allegations, not findings of fact. Abacus categorically denies any unlawful conduct, has cooperated fully with all regulatory processes, and is confident in the lawfulness of its employment practices," the company said in a statement.

According to union leaders, officers are on strike from several city and commercial sites, including the Able Wollman Building, police stations, housing developments and the water treatment facility.

"This is not a dispute against the City of Baltimore. This is a dispute against the city contractor, Abacus, and others who've broken the law by violating workers' rights to form a union and have a voice on the job," said Jaime Contreras, Executive Vice President of SEUI 32BJ.

On Thursday, Baltimore City Council members Odette Ramos and Jermaine Jones joined officers for a rally. The leaders argued that what workers are asking for is about dignity.

"People don't choose to go on strike. They depend on their wages," said Jones. "For them to take it to this extent, there must be a large amount of frustration."

Neighbors who live and frequent the Harbor East community said they are used to security in the area, especially with more crime hot spots popping up recently.

Visitors to the area said they feel safe walking around, seeing security.

Abacus Corporation said their work with security officers is a long-term commitment to the community, and they intend to take care of their officers as they have in the past.

But the heat shield for the Artemis II flight, identical to the one used with Artemis I, was already installed. Replacing it with a new design would have delayed the mission by 18 months or more.

The 16.5-foot-wide heat shield protecting the Orion capsule during an unpiloted test flight in 2022 was seriously damaged during reentry.

Instead, NASA managers opted to launch Artemis II "as is" based on test data and an exhaustive analysis that indicated the shield would work properly if the reentry trajectory was modified to eliminate the temperature and pressure swings that contributed to the damage seen after the Artemis I flight.

"They did a tremendous amount of research, a lot of groundbreaking research in some facilities that we had not used before, and they discovered the root cause," Wiseman said.

"They did wind tunnel testing and laser testing and hyper-velocity testing, and they determined that if we come in with this lofted profile ... that this heat shield will be safe for us to go fly.

"So I think all that points in the direction of goodness," he said. "And I think if you, as a human being who was about to board this rocket, had sat in the meetings that we sat in and listened to the experts and gone through the data with them, you would have the same comfort."

What went wrong with Artemis I?

During the Artemis I mission, the unpiloted capsule followed a planned "skip" trajectory, similar in concept to skipping a flat stone across still water. After an initial dip into the upper atmosphere, the Artemis I capsule skipped back out again before making its final descent to splashdown. The skip reentry helps reduce the spacecraft's velocity while offering NASA a wider range of splashdown options in case bad weather makes a targeted landing site problematic.

The Artemis I heat shield after its return to Earth in 2022.

Despite the heat shield damage seen after the flight, the Artemis I reentry was successful. The capsule landed on target, and officials said that had any astronauts been aboard, they would have had no problems. But the damage triggered alarm at NASA.

"NASA identified more than 100 locations where ablative thermal protective material from Orion's heat shield wore away differently than expected during reentry into Earth's atmosphere," NASA's Office of Inspector General wrote.

"While the heat shield successfully protected the Crew Module and its systems during the Artemis I mission, upon inspection after Orion's recovery, engineers noted unexpected variations in the appearance of the heat shield Avcoat — the ablative material that helps protect the capsule from the heat of reentry.

"Specifically, portions of the char layer wore away differently than NASA engineers predicted, cracking and breaking off the spacecraft in fragments that created a trail of debris rather than melting away as designed," the office said. "The unexpected behavior of the Avcoat creates a risk that the heat shield may not sufficiently protect the capsule's systems and crew from the extreme heat of reentry on future missions."

Another look at the Artemis I heat shield showing areas where major damage was observed.

Testing revealed the damage was related to the heat shield's permeability, or rather, its lack thereof. After the initial, relatively deep dive into the atmosphere, the Avcoat material making up the shield was unable to properly dissipate the heat that remained in its lower layers during the skip back out of the atmosphere.

Entry heating is what makes the Avcoat's outer char layer permeable enough to allow gas to escape. The Artemis I heat shield worked normally during its initial descent into the atmosphere. But when it climbed back out, reentry heating eased and the outer char layer became much less permeable.

The underlying material was still extremely hot, undergoing a process known as pyrolysis — combustion without oxygen — and generating gas that had no way to escape. Those buildups eventually blew chunks of the heat shield's outer layers away.

"They go back up from that first entry, they're still hot, they're still off-gassing," said an engineer familiar with the investigation. "The fact that the material itself isn't permeable enough is causing that gas pressure to build up now, very rapidly, because they're still hot. But the char layer has paused."

A closeup of the Artemis I heat shield shows an area where a chunk of the outer layer was blown off during entry in 2022.

The outer char layer is "the only part of the Artemis I and Artemis II heat shield that actually allows it to breathe, or allows it to off-gas. So once it stops, now there's no mechanism in the deeper parts of the heat shield for that gas to escape," he said.

"So the pressure built up, and as the capsule came back down and started reheating, the pressure was already there.

"All those cracks, the pockets had already formed. And now, bang, bang, bang, pop. Avcoat started sloughing off during that second entry," the engineer said.

A modified reentry trajectory should solve the problem

Engineers verified in lab tests that a modified skip-entry trajectory — one with an initial dip into the upper atmosphere followed by a shorter-duration climb back out — would allow the Avcoat to "breathe" throughout, preventing the formation of cracks and trapped gas. An independent review team agreed with those conclusions.

The unpiloted Artemis I flight used a "skip" reentry trajectory in which the Orion crew capsule dipped into the atmosphere, skipped back up, and then made its final descent.

                NASA

Interestingly, Apollo engineers were aware of the Avcoat permeability issue and designed that program's heat shields accordingly. Apollo capsules also used skip reentry trajectories and had no problems. But the Avcoat used in the Artemis heat shields was reformulated slightly, and that ended up affecting its permeability.

In any case, the downside to the modified reentry trajectory for Artemis II will reduce the distance the Orion capsule can fly to avoid bad weather in the planned splashdown zone. It will also result in higher sustained heating during the descent, but engineers say that is exactly what is needed to maintain permeability in the outer char layer and ensure good performance.

Former astronaut Charles Camarda disagreed, strongly criticizing the "fly as is" decision. He argues that engineers do not fully understand the root cause of the Artemis I heat shield damage and cannot accurately predict how the Artemis II heat shield will perform or whether the revised entry trajectory might have unintended consequences.

In a letter to the NASA administrator, Camarda wrote that "history shows accidents occur when organizations convince themselves they understand problems they do not."

Like Wiseman, Glover says he trusts the analysis of the Artemis I problem, saying critics "haven't been in these meetings from day one and met the team and looked them in the eye and shook their hands at the ends of these meetings."

That said, he added, "I don't want to discount the things that they've said. Any time you talk about fire, any time you talk about entry and heat shields, talk about parachutes, these are high-risk things that ... don't have fault tolerance built in. They have to work."

"And so I appreciate all of that nudging and poking and prodding that they've caused," Glover said. "They have made us sharpen our pencils and put more due diligence, more vigilance into that process. But I think we've done that. And so I think the crew is comfortable because of that team."

That's when her phone started ringing and she realized she was not alone.

"I would just like to know why he felt so entitled. We're a small business and every dollar counts," Nicole Massoni, owner of Massoni's Italian Restaurant, said. "The fact that he felt so entitled to walk out without paying for anything is what really got to me."

It was a typical Wednesday afternoon at the Perry Hall restaurant before it turned bizarre.

The restaurant said Nelson ordered several beers in short succession and was cut off from drinking by the bartender. After being cut off, Nelson allegedly left the restaurant without paying his bill, and it was caught on security video.

Multiple dine-and-dash allegations

Massoni then took to social media, posting to warn other businesses.

That's when she says her phone didn't stop ringing and the comments started pouring in, saying Nelson had allegedly targeted restaurants up and down Belair Road. Silver Spring Mining Company and Looney's Pub saw the post and tossed him out.

"Guess he didn't think this area stuck together the way we do. For sure, they had our backs and that means a lot," Massoni said.

According to court documents, Nelson was later arrested after another alleged dine-and-dash at nearby El Salto. He was also charged with theft at Grain Wine and Spirits.

He is currently not facing charges in the alleged theft at Massoni's Italian Restaurant.

He was released on bond, according to court records.

Last month, Nelson was allegedly spotted again on a security camera at Towne Grill & Pub in Joppatowne, leaving the restaurant without paying. The Harford County Sheriff's Office said charges are pending in that case.

The sheriff's office added that he is facing charges after an alleged dine-and-dash at Island Spice Grille and Lounge in Edgewood.

He is also facing an allegation of disorderly conduct from a disturbance at a nearby hotel that same week.

He was released on his own recognizance, according to court records.

"I think that he is dangerous and that something needs to happen. There needs to be some sort of consequence or punishment because he will just continue to do this," Massoni added.

Massoni said the restaurant received another message on Thursday that the same suspect may be trying to now target businesses in Timonium.

Get outside and enjoy tomorrow and this weekend. The weather looks beautiful, ahead of much warmer weather next week. Baltimore may reach 90 for the first time this year.

Milder spring weather through the weekend

Patchy fog develops tonight, into early Friday. Friday begins with temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

The final day of the workweek will be wonderful. Sunshine and a southerly breeze will send temperatures into the lower 70s; cooler by the bay. If you're headed to the Orioles game Friday evening, expect excellent spring baseball weather. The first pitch is at 7:15 p.m. It'll be in the 60s through a large portion of the game.

A stray sprinkle or light shower is possible overnight Friday into early Saturday morning.

Highs Saturday afternoon will top out near 70° with a refreshing northerly breeze. Saturday evening's Orioles game will turn quite cool, so make sure you have a jacket as temperatures fall into the 50s.

Pleasant weather continues with a dry forecast during the second-half of the weekend. Plan on a cool breeze for Sunday's Orioles home game at Camden Yards.

Summer heat coming to Maryland

A large dome of high pressure along the eastern seaboard will allow temperatures to quickly warm to summer-like levels next week.

Temperatures soar well into the 80s away from the bay on Monday afternoon. This round of upcoming heat will peak Wednesday, into Thursday. Baltimore could reach 90° for the first time this season; it would be the earliest 90° since 2013. There is a greater chance of hitting 90° across the western and northwestern parts of the metro. Areas along the Bay will remain cooler with a wind off the water. Heat will ease later in the week.

There is an off-and-on chance of showers next week, along with heat.
