Federal government hacked

China-based hackers are suspected of breaking into the computer networks of the U.S. government personnel office and stealing identifying information of at least 4 million current and former federal workers, American officials said. There is concern that some of the information that was tapped could be used to aid the espionage operations of China, which quickly emerged as the likely source of the hack, reports CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett.

Recently radicalized

Former educators of Usaamah Rahim, the man federal agents believe prepared to carry out an ISIS-inspired plot to behead an American and attack police officers, describe him as a promising young student. CBS News Correspondent Jeff Pegues reports that while his family insists his demeanor had not changed, the authorities who began monitoring him 24 hours a day believe he recently became radicalized by the terror group.

Veterans & IVF

Alex Dillmann, an Army Staff Sgt., and his wife Holly always dreamed their future would include children, but during Alex's second tour in Afghanistan he was critically injured by a roadside bomb. Alex's injuries prevent the couple from having children naturally. As CBS News Correspondent Jan Crawford reports, the goal of having a family keeps many veterans going, but a 23-year-old act of Congress prevents some from achieving that goal.

Cat parasite

Everyone loves cuddling with kittens, but there can be a little-known danger lurking behind that furry little face and that innocent-sounding meow: a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). The cat-carried parasite can infect any warm-blooded species, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates more than 60 million people in the U.S. may have it.

Little saved

"Most households approaching retirement have low savings." That's the no-nonsense title of a recent report from the U.St. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on retiremen security. The GAO report joins the deluge of information about the inadequacy of retirement savings in America. Here are a few of its sobering findings.

Campaign transparency

As the 2016 presidential campaign ramps up, it may seem like deep-pocketed, often-anonymous political financiers are growing more influential by the day. The most recent CBS News poll shows that voters -- Democrats, Republicans and independents alike -- are tired of it. Leaders in Washington aren't doing much about it, but at the state level, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are considering ways to give voters more information about who's bankrolling expensive attack ads and shadowy robo-calls.

92-year-old marathoner

People are still talking about one amazing competitor at San Diego's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. For any athlete, finishing a marathon takes special grit and will power, but at 92 years old, Harriette Thompson broke a record. CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassmann introduces us to the North Carolina woman who finished hours behind the winners, but is still victorious.
