"Uncomfortable" visit; Week One -- CBS News Brief, Jan. 23, 2017

“Uncomfortable” visit

President Trump’s speech at CIA headquarters was supposed to smooth over any bad feelings with the intelligence community created by the very public mistrust on display between its leaders and the nation’s new chief executive. It may have done exactly the opposite, judging from what intelligence officials have told CBS News about his visit.

Down to work

President Trump’s first full week in the White House will likely be action-packed, both in the executive mansion and at the Capitol. From a handful of Cabinet hearings and votes to a Republican retreat and Mr. Trump’s first foreign leader visit, we’ve got a rundown of the major happenings in Washington and further afield to watch this week.

Last stand

President Trump has promised to wipe ISIS out, and while it’s still unclear how he’ll change U.S. policy to try and make good on that vow, the U.S.-backed fight with the Islamic extremists is about to take another significant turn on the ground. Half of the militants’ last bastion in Iraq has been liberated -- and it was a bloody battle -- but purging them from the other half will likely prove “even tougher.”

First lady

First lady Melania Trump was next to her husband when he assumed the presidency at the end of last week, but she won’t be constantly by his side -- at least not for now. As Mrs. Trump starts the week with her son Barron in New York City, it’s clear she will take on the new role in her own way.

Predicting addiction

Some 2 million Americans are known to be hooked on prescription drugs, fueled by the nationwide surge in opioid use. Now, one insurance giant is trying to profile people deemed merely at risk of abusing the drugs in a bid to cut down on workers’ compensation claims. Can “big data” predict who will get hooked?

World’s worst debt

Some debt can be “good,” like a mortgage, which lets homeowners build equity and claim tax benefits. Then there’s “bad” debt, such as credit card loans. But one kind of debt -- college loans -- is potentially the most onerous. We look at why college loan debt is viewed by some as the worst debt to be stuck in.
