First session
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., will face the Senate Judiciary Committee today and answer questions from his colleagues -- who will play a key role in deciding whether to confirm his nomination to be the nation’s top law enforcement officer. We look at three issues likely to come up in what could be a contentious first hearing.
Chief of staff
President Obama will deliver his farewell address tonight in Chicago. The president’s chief of staff, Denis McDonough, gave CBS News’ Charlie Rose a preview of the speech, and also discussed what he wants the country to know about President Obama.
Lyin’ supplement?
A new lawsuit by two government agencies accuses the company behind dietary supplement Prevagen of misleading its customers. The popular supplement is heavily marketed as a way to help improve memory and is sold in pharmacies and health stores nationwide.
Cost of a killer
A common argument against the death penalty is that executing criminals costs more than imprisoning them. In the case of one of America’s most notorious murderers, however, that may not be true. We look at how much California taxpayers have spent to keep Charles Manson behind bars.
American wheels
Donald Trump has bashed automakers for planning new factories in Mexico rather than the U.S. The rhetorical attacks may be politically resonant, but they obscure a complicated truth in the era of global supply chains: Most vehicles defined as “American-made” are made by foreign manufacturers.
Few golden years
One common metric for gauging a country’s qualify of life is how long its citizens live. By that measure, America is flunking. Data show retirees in the U.S. have a considerably lower life expectancy than their peers in other developed countries. Are Americans losing out on their “golden years”?
