Bodies returned

Bad weather hindered efforts to recover victims of AirAsia Flight 8501 today, and sent wreckage drifting far from the crash site, as grieving relatives "surrounded in darkness" gathered in an airport and prayed for the strength to move forward. CBS News Correspondent Allen Pizzey reports the first bodies recovered have been repatriated to Indonesia.

Freezing New Year

Temperatures across much of the country will dip below the freezing point for New Year's Eve. That includes the Southwest, which is bracing for unusually cold weather. CBS News Correspondent John Blackstone reports from Pasadena, California, where a famous New Year's tradition is in for an unprecedented chill.

"Revenge hacking"

American companies are seeking ways to fend off hack attacks similar to the one against Sony Pictures but, CBS News correspondent Jan Crawford reports, the FBI is looking into some of the country's largest banks to see if they took "revenge hacking" too far and overstepped the law.

Surviving cancer

More Americans are surviving cancer, according to an annual American Cancer Society's report, which finds rates of cancer deaths have dropped 22 percent over the last two decades. That amounts to 1.5 million cancer deaths averted. Here are the top four reasons.

Stopping the clock

In an era when many women postpone motherhood into their late 30s or beyond, a growing number of women are using a new technology to freeze their eggs. CBS News chief medical correspondent Jon LaPook reports The American Society for Reproductive Medicine does not endorse the practice.

Obama's year

Politically, 2014 will likely be remembered as the year President Obama's party lost control of the Senate, leaving him to grapple with an all-Republican Congress in the final two years of his presidency. But when you consider the other defining issues of 2014, the results are a bit more mixed. Here's a look at his year overall.

Economic review

While 2014 has proven to be successful for many -- especially the top 1 percent of America's earners -- recent economic improvements haven't reached everyone. Looking ahead, here are the seven most critical economic questions for 2015.

Cops on protests

While police may look intimidating and impervious behind protective equipment, one tells CBS News it's not how officers feel. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone reports that, when cops try to separate troublemakers from peaceful protesters, making an arrest can incite more trouble.

Sea rescue

A cargo ship that sent a distress signal yesterday was carrying almost 1,000 migrants -- and was on a collision course with the rocky Italian coast after the crew abandoned the vessel. Then the Italian coast guard took action.

Jailed in Egypt

Three Al Jazeera journalists jailed in Egypt for the past year are looking forward to a court hearing tomorrow. The men were convicted of supporting the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and of spreading false news, but from the start, the case has been more about politics than crime. As CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports, the political winds in Egypt have shifted recently, and their next court date offers some hope the trio could be freed.

Endangered Koalas

Koalas are in a cuddly class by themselves. President Obama and Russian President Putin concur -- and they don't agree on much. But there's a stunning and slightly uncomfortable reality threatening koalas: chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease.

New Year's drops

With final preparations underway for New York City's New Year's countdown, the glittery ball is not the only object that will fall from the sky at midnight. CBS News correspondent Jericka Duncan reports on what other cities are dropping.
