Stephen Colbert addresses Trump, police shootings
Stephen Colbert got serious when he talked about police shootings and the recent protests in Charlotte after the death of Keith Scott.
“The last 24 hours, the news has been really, really rough,” the “Late Show” host said. “The governor of North Carolina has declared a state of emergency in Charlotte.”
He continued. “The shooting of African-Americans by police officers and the community’s outrage that follows seem to keep happening over and over again, no matter how many times we do nothing,” deadpanned Colbert.
Colbert pointed out that nothing so far seems to be working.
“I just wish there was some sort of respectful, silent civil protests that people could engage in that wouldn’t enrage the other side,” Colbert said, in front of an image of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem. Colbert pointed out that the move has made Kaepernick “the most disliked player in the NFL.”
One person Colbert thinks we shouldn’t listen to?
“Civil rights icon the Reverend Dr. Donald Trump,” he cracked.
Colbert talked about how Trump recently suggested bringing back stop-and-frisk.
“Stop-and-frisk is a bad idea,” he said. “Not only has it been found unconstitutional, but if Trump’s doing the frisking, it’ll take him hours with those tiny little hands of his.”
