Reacting to the news that suicide bombers had killed dozens of people and injured more than 140 at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport Tuesday, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both expressed condolences for those affected.

"Today's attack in Istanbul only strengthens our resolve to defeat the forces of terrorism and radical jihadism around the world," she said. "And it reminds us that the United States cannot retreat. We must deepen our cooperation with our allies and partners in the Middle East and Europe to take on this threat. Such cooperation is essential to protecting the homeland and keeping our country safe."

Trump also addressed the tragedy Tuesday, saying in a statement that the "whole world is stunned and horrified."

"The terrorist threat has never been greater," he continued. "Our enemies are brutal and ruthless and will do anything to murder those who do not bend to their will. We must take steps to protect America from terrorists, and do everything in our power to improve our security to keep America safe."

He tweeted on the topic as well:

At a rally in Ohio, Trump said the attack in Istanbul is proof that the United States "better get smart" to protect itself.

"As you know we had another suicide bombing, Istanbul, Turkey," he said. "Many, many people killed. Many, many people injured. Folks, there's something going on that's really, really bad. Alright. It's bad. And we better get smart, and we better get tough or we're not going to have much of a country left, OK? It's bad. Terrible."
