Donald Trump named Steven Mnuchin as his national finance chairman on Wednesday -- a man who has contributed thousands of dollars to Hillary Clinton's previous election bids and those of other Democrats.

Mnuchin is the chairman and CEO of private investment firm Dune Capital Management and CEO of bank holding company OneWest Bank Group based in Pasadena, California. Mnuchin also served as a partner at Goldman Sachs .

According to Federal Election Commission public records, he contributed $7,400 to Clinton's Senate and presidential campaigns since 2000, though not her current bid. Records show he donated a total of $12,500 to Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential cycle as well as $1,000 to Tim Pawlenty in that race.

In the 2008 presidential race, Mnuchin donated just over $2,000 to a slew of Democratic candidates: then-Sen. Obama, Clinton, John Edwards, Bill Richardson and Chris Dodd. He also donated just over $2,000 to Romney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in that cycle.

Records also show he donated a total of $2,500 to John Kerry in his 2004 presidential bid, $1,000 to Al Gore in his 2000 presidential bid and $1,000 to Chuck Schumer in 2002.

"Steven is a professional at the highest level with an extensive and very successful financial background," Trump said in a statement. He brings unprecedented experience and expertise to a fundraising operation that will benefit the Republican Party and ultimately defeat Hillary Clinton."

This comes as Trump enters the general election phase of his campaign now that he's the presumptive GOP nominee. He said this week he doesn't intend to entirely self-fund as he did for his primary campaign, and will help raise money for the GOP.
