"12 Years a Slave" leads SAG Awards nominees

"12 Years a Slave" led nominees for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Wednesday, earning four nods including one for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.

Joining them in the best ensemble category (the night's top honor) are the casts of "American Hustle," "August: Osage County," "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Lee Daniels' The Butler."

"12 Years a Slave" also picked up nominations for lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, supporting actor Michael Fassbender and supporting actress Lupita Nyong'o.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are often seen as an indicator of how films will do at the Academy Awards, because SAG makes up a large portion of the Academy's voters. Earlier this year, the actors' group gave "Argo" the best ensemble prize and the film later went on to win the Oscar for best picture.

The SAG Awards also announced nominations in television categories. Nominees for best performance by an ensemble in a drama series went to the casts of "Boardwalk Empire," "Breaking Bad," "Downton Abbey," "Game of Thrones" and "Homeland." Comedy series nominees are the casts of "30 Rock," "Arrested Development," "The Big Bang Theory," "Modern Family" and "Veep."

The SAG Awards winners will be announced on Jan. 18 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, in a ceremony that will air on TNT and TBS.
