An Irish paramedic will receive a special award for bravery after rescuing a woman who was almost swept to sea by a huge wave on the Aran Islands.

Dramatic video captured the moment a huge wave came crashing down onto Apu Gupta, a student from India.

Gupta, who injured her ankle, is now recovering at the hospital and said she is grateful to be alive.

"You're so lucky, you're so blessed and you're lucky to be alive," she said. "I don't think any of us know what being alive really means until you see death so close."

Gupta said she held on to a boulder until she could be rescued. The people involved in that rescue tied a jacket around a backpack. When they tossed it to her, she was able to put the backpack on and they pulled her up.

"It was still dangerous on the cliff ledge and we sat her down to calm her before getting her all the way to safety," paramedic Seamus McCarthy said, according to the Mirror.
