Video shows person of interest in killing of New Orleans transgender woman

NEW ORLEANS -- A new surveillance video released by the New Orleans Police Department could lead to vital information about a February murder of a transgender woman, CBS affiliate WWL-TV reports.

The video shows a vehicle and person of interest in the murder of Ciara McElveen, a 25-year-old transgender woman who was stabbed to death Feb. 27, just two days after another transgendered woman, Chyna Gibson was found and shot and killed in New Orleans. A week before these murders, Jaquarrius Holland was found killed in another Louisiana town, CBS Evening News reported.

The slayings are not related, but they highlight an alarming trend, according to the Evening News report. Seven trans women have been killed nationwide already this year. Last year, a record 23 were killed -- the majority black and Latino women.

The video was captured near the road where McElveen was found stabbed, just before the incident. It matches the description of a vehicle described by witnesses. Police believe the person seen getting out of the car could have vital information about the murder.
