Wildfires

A fast-moving wildfire in Washington state has forced hundreds from their homes. Flames threaten the entire town of Roosevelt, about 130 miles east of Portland, Oregon. There are nearly 30 major wildfires burning in the West. Today will be another hot one on the fire line for crews battling California's massive Rocky Fire. It covers 100 square miles, north of San Francisco. As CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports from Lakeport, the worst of those flames may be over.

California's self-serve lottery tickets

A new way to buy lottery tickets at California gas stations is fueling controversy, as critics say it's pumping up sales at the expense of buyers who can afford it least. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone reports on how gamblers can serve themselves.

Voting rights

Tomorrow, on the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, President Obama will speak to the public about the importance of restoring the landmark law. The President has said, "one of the crowning achievements of our democracy" -- has been "weakened, its future subject to political rancor. ... Right now, in 2015, 50 years after Selma, there are laws across this country designed to make it harder for people to vote."

Student debt

As the cost of higher education rises, many students are struggling to make ends meet while in college, and then can spend decades after graduation trying to pay off those loans. A recent report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found outstanding student loan balances were nearly $1.2 trillion at the end of March, an increase of $78 billion from the same time a year ago.

Spicy foods

There's good news for people who like to turn up the heat at mealtime: Spicy foods may be linked to a longer life. A study by an international team of researchers led by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences found that regular consumption of spicy food is associated with a lower risk of death

Sea-to-table dining

Farm-to-table dining is soaring in popularity, but a Tokyo restaurant is using a fresher approach, when it comes to fish: sea-to-table. CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reports on a restaurant where "the catch of the day" is up to you.

Free diver missing

It's a sport that, by its nature, tests the very limits of human endurance and frequently finds them. That's what appears to have happened to probably the greatest free diver the sport has ever known, Natalia Molchanova, who disappeared off the Spanish island Formentera near Ibiza on Sunday, CBS News Correspondent Mark Phillips reports.
