"The Walking Dead" renewed for season 6

AMC has renewed "The Walking Dead" for a sixth season, days before the premiere of season 5 of the zombie drama.

The series broke the news to fans in a tweet with a photo of body parts (yes, you read that correctly) assembled into a "6."

"We could not be more excited for October 12 as we share new episodes of 'The Walking Dead' with fans around the globe," said AMC President Charlie Collier, according to TVLine. "In advance of Sunday's season five premiere, AMC proudly confirms a sixth season order of this extraordinary series. Thank you to Robert Kirkman, [showrunner] Scott Gimple, the terrific executive producers, and the entire team who brings this compelling world and these rich characters to life. There's plenty more Dead ahead thanks to their impressive, collective effort."

The series has been the No. 1 show on television in the adults 18-49 demographic for the past two years running, and the season 4 finale attracted 15.7 million viewers in March, up from the then record-breaking 12.4 million who watched the season 3 conclusion.

And if that's not enough walkers to hold you over, you're in luck -- AMC has also ordered a pilot for a potential "Walking Dead" companion series, with a new story and new characters.

The fifth season of "The Walking Dead" premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
