Report: Russia's women's Olympic volleyball coach dies in apparent suicide

(CBS/AP) MOSCOW - Sergei Ovchinnikov, the coach of the Russian women's Olympic volleyball team, has died in an apparent suicide, according to media outlets. He was 43.

The Russian Volleyball Federation says Ovchinnikov died Wednesday at the team's training base in Croatia. Multiple media outlets reported he died in his hotel room.

Neither the federation nor Ovchinnikov's team, Dynamo, commented on the cause of his death. However, Croatia's 24sata news website reports that the team's employees discovered Ovchinnikov hanging in his room on the hotel's fourth floor.

Ovchinnikov led the Russian team, which was considered one of the main contenders for gold, to the quarterfinals at the London Olympics, where they lost to Brazil.

"This is so stupid," former Russian coach Vladimir Kuzyutkin told the Russian News Service, according to 24sata. "He was my friend, my colleague. No one said a bad word about him. Yes, there was a blunder at the Olympics, well, to hell with it. I don't know why he couldn't cope with it."
