LG unveils new flagship G4 smartphone

LG is rolling out a new smartphone model, but can it break into a highly competitive market?

LG showed off the G4 smartphone Tuesday at simultaneous media events in New York and London to coincide with the phone's launch in the company's home country of Korea.

The G4 enters an increasingly luxury field, led by the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which includes Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and HTC's One M9. And what says luxury like leather? Recalling, perhaps, the feel of a new sports car, the G4 stands out with an optional stitched leather backing.

From a tech perspective, the G4 has an improved display, a 16-megapixel camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. LG claims the battery life will beat the S6. All of these put together could make the new handset a contender.

"Judging from what we know and from what we experienced during our hands-on time with the phone, the G4 has the makings of a solid flagship: an ultra-crisp display, a nimble camera and a powerful processor," our friends over at CNET said, adding that "while it faces stiff competition from its Android rivals, there are a number of ways it can rise to the top."

AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular will carry the phone in the U.S., beginning in May or June.
