GOP senator to campaign in Iowa against Donald Trump

Sen. Ben Sasse announced Tuesday that he plans to spend the next two days campaigning with fellow senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz in Iowa.

"I am not endorsing any candidate-- I am urging conservatives to hold every candidate accountable to keeping their word so that we uphold the Constitution's system of checks and balances. I'm pro-Constitution and if that makes me anti-Trump, that's Mr. Trump's problem," Sasse said in a statement.

He said he could also appear alongside other "constitutional candidates" except for Trump.

Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, was elected to the Senate during the 2014 midterm elections and has consistently expressed opposition to Trump.

On Sunday, Sasse tweeted questions for Trump about his personal life and his stances on various policies like on gun rights.

The campaign stops come less than a week before the Iowa caucuses next Monday. According to the latest CBS News battleground tracker, Trump is leading in all three key early voting states: Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
