Cronkite Wins Viennese Award

Former CBS Evening News anchor Walter Cronkite received Vienna's Golden Medal Monday for presenting the Austrian New Year's concert in the U.S. since 1982. The event includes a performance by the Vienna Philharmonic, always ending with The Radetzky March by Johann Strauss.

Cronkite has covered virtually every news event during his more than 60 years in journalism - the last 49 affiliated with CBS News. He became a special correspondent for CBS News when he stepped down as anchorman and managing editor of the CBS Evening News in 1981 after 19 years.

In addition to his assignments as a Special Correspondent for CBS, most recently looking back on the century and millennium for CBS Radio News, Cronkite hosts many public affairs and cultural programs for PBS and syndication. His Cronkite Ward Company has produced more than 25 award-winning documentary hours for The Discovery Channel, PBS and other networks.
