Morning Road Map
by Michelle Levi and Steve Chaggaris
McCain is in Sparks, Nev., where he’s holding what the campaign is billing as a “Local Leadership Meeting” today at 12:45pm ET right before a 1pm town hall meeting. This evening he holds fundraisers in Incline Village, Nev. and Englewood, Colo.
Obama holds private meetings in Washington, D.C. this morning before a midday fundraiser at the Mayflower Hotel. He will address the House Democratic Caucus at 5:30pm ET on Capitol Hill.
NEW OVERNIGHT: “I know that it’s controversial here in California, and I know there are certain environmentalists who have said that you shouldn’t do it,’’ McCain said of off shore oil drilling at a Bakersfield, Calif., fundraiser last night. He added, “we will compete and win here in the state of California with your support.” Speaking about her recent trip to Rwanda, Cindy McCain said her husband was abused as a POW in Vietnam. “He won’t say it, but I will,” she said. “He was mistreated during those times. He came home and overcame, much like those women [in Rwanda] did, overcame what had been done to him and what had happened. He reconciled. He became a part of the process that enabled Vietnam to have a normal relationship with the United States, the normalization.”

McCAIN’S HEALTH
Larry King asked McCain about the mole he had removed from his face Monday and general concerns about his health. “I had one serious bout with [melanoma] and that was frankly due to my own neglect. I let it go and go and go. In fact, I was running for president at the time. I'm not making that mistake again,” he admitted. Yet he assured King voters had no reason to be concerned about his health.

McCAIN vs. OBAMA
Chicago Sun-Times’ Roeper, “Million bucks on a candidate? Put it on McCain” : “If you handed me a million dollars today and said I could place it on one candidate, I'd pace around like a contestant on "Deal or No Deal?" waffling and wavering and considering both options. Then, I'd put the money on McCain. Call me a cynic, call me a realist. I just have this nagging, heavy feeling that, on Election Day, far too many people are going to cast their vote for McCain not so much because they believe in McCain, but because they just can't take the idea of Obama in the White House.”
