Fleming, the president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust. "Our mission has always been to make art accessible to our Los Angeles community and visitors from around the world. In the coming years, guided by our commitment to All for Art, we will enhance the visitor experience across the Getty Center campus through reimagined spaces and new offerings, while prioritizing sustainability."

Officials said that the modernization project will include enhancements like reimagined gallery spaces, a renovated Welcome Hall that will feature a new cafe bookstore and a retail shop, improvements to buildings and public spaces, increased accessibility and upgrades to the tram system that brings visitors to the center and improved cell phone and WiFi services.

Some improvement projects are already underway, officials said, noting that galleries have been closed to accommodate work on their heating and air conditioning systems.

Getty Center officials said that they would open a "programming space" across the street on Sepulveda Boulevard during the closure.

"This venue will host a slate of special programs throughout the closure and will remain a dedicated program space once the Center reopens," the release said. "Getty has also acquired a property in Westwood as a long-term investment in housing for its scholar programs. Early building concepts are underway for the site, which is located near the new planned Metro stop at Westwood and Wilshire."

Officials noted that the Getty Villa, located in the Pacific Palisades, would remain open as usual while the modernization project is completed at the Getty Center. During that time, some paintings selected by curators will be featured at the Getty Villa.

"We look forward to welcoming visitors back in spring 2028, in time to celebrate the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles and experience our more accessible, resilient and dynamic campus," Fleming's statement said.

Renzo Pianos Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, as seen from the La Brea Tar Pits, on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021 in Los Angeles, CA.

The renovations are being made through the more than $131 million raised in a fundraising effort, which has an end goal of $240 million, according to officials.

"As we prepare the La Brea Tar Pits transformation, I encourage everyone to visit this cultural icon and experience firsthand what makes this site unlike any in the world," said a statement from Lori Bettison-Varga, the President and Director of the National History Museums of Los Angeles County. "This is the largest capital investment in NHM's history, and it reflects an extraordinary commitment from our civic and philanthropic partners to the future of La Brea Tar Pits. Our responsibility is not only to preserve the fossils in our care, but to ensure that the knowledge they hold is accessible to all."

Officials said that the plan was to fully reopen by summer 2028, when the LA28 Summer Olympic Games descend on Southern California.

Work at the Page Museum aims to "modernize and improve access to the building, including visible research laboratories, new collections storage and displays, an immersive theater, and a roof terrace with views of the park and the museum's historic atrium and frieze," the release said.

Officials said that the scientific research conducted on site will continue throughout the closure, as will the educational programming like behind-the-scenes tours and school activities. During the closure, the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park will offer programs focused on Ice Age research at the tar pits.

Los Angeles Police Department officers established a large perimeter in a Sylmar neighborhood early Thursday morning as they conducted a nearly 12-hour search for a man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death late Wednesday.

They were called to the 13800 block of Beaver Street near Dronfield Avenue at around 9:20 p.m. after learning of a stabbing, LAPD officers told CBS LA. Upon arrival, officers found a 35-year-old woman suffering from stab wounds.

The victim, who hasn't yet been publicly identified, was rushed to a nearby hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. She was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Police said that the stabbing suspect, the victim's 35-year-old boyfriend, ran from the scene of the stabbing on foot. The nearly 12-hour search continued into Thursday morning, as LAPD officers believed that the man was still hiding somewhere in the neighborhood, near Hubbard and Eighth Street, approximately four miles from where the stabbing happened.

Police said they did not believe the man was armed, but advised the public to be cautious.

At around 9:50 p.m., LAPD officers told CBS LA that the suspect had been taken into custody. He has not yet been identified.

The search perimeter included the Gridley Street Elementary School, which led Los Angeles Unified School District police to relocate the students to nearby Maclay Middle School.

"Due to ongoing police activity in the area, the students and staff from Gridley-Montanez Dual Language Academy will be relocated temporarily to Maclay Middle School," said a statement from an LAUSD spokesperson. "There will be additional staff onsite to assist and support."

She was rescued by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration personnel and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the release said. She was then transferred to the aquarium for medical evaluation and care because of their "expertise in treating and releasing stranded and injured sea turtles."

The rescue took place as the Aquarium of the Pacific's Southern California Sea Turtle Monitoring community science program was ongoing, officials said. The event sees a weekly gathering of volunteers who analyze monthly field data on green sea turtles seen in the San Gabriel River. When volunteers spotted Meatloaf, they reached out to NOAA and then stood watch over the turtle to ensure her safety until she could be saved.

"The entangled line severely damaged a front flipper, cutting off blood supply. We have been doing all we can, including surgery to try and save the flipper. It is showing some early promising signs of healing," said a statement from Dr. Lance Adams, the Aquarium of the Pacific's director of veterinary services.

The sea turtle rehabilitation area opened in January, allowing the aquarium to double its capacity for caring for stranded, sick or injured sea turtles, the release said. The area includes a nearly 4,000-gallon rehabilitation pool and an audio-visual display where visitors can learn more about the organization's rescue efforts.

The Aquarium of the Pacific has a decades-long history of caring for Southern California's rehabilitating sea turtle population. Species include green, olive ridley and loggerhead sea turtles.

"One rescue is never the last," the release said. "The Aquarium is asking for the public's help to fund the specialized medical care needed for Meatloaf to recover and be deemed ready to be released back to the wild. Donations to the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Program support expert care, critical surgeries, and rehabilitation for Meatloaf and future rescued turtles."

Global ticket sales for the LA28 Summer Olympic Games officially launched Thursday, marking the first time that worldwide fans of the games can secure their tickets to witness history in 2028.

This is the next step in ticket sales, after last week's presale window for select Los Angeles and Oklahoma City local, who signed up for early ticketing.

"The unprecedented response to the LA and OKC Locals Presale reflects surging excitement for the Games," said a release from LA28 organizers. "In its first week, LA28 significantly exceeded first week sales for any previous Olympic Games, with every one of those tickets going to LA and OKC locals."

Officials said that millions of locals registered, resulting in hundreds of thousands of Southern Californians and Oklahomans being selected for early access.

"Now, LA28 is taking that energy global," the release said. "Today's launch of Drop 1 - the earliest on-sale period in the history of the Games - is giving fans everywhere the chance to secure their place in history."

The fans who were randomly selected through what officials called The LA28 Draw received time slots for Drop 1 can now log in during their designated time slot to purchase tickets for any Olympic event, the release said. Tickets are also available for the opening and closing ceremonies.

LA28 officials said that they are closely tracking feedback from fans, some of whom have expressed disappointment over the cost of tickets, as they begin the ticket purchasing process. They said that there is an emphasis on providing a variety of ticket options, and that nearly half of the Olympic tickets would be under $200. More than 75% of all tickets, including the finals, would be under $400, the release said. Approximately 5% of tickets, including prime seats to marquee events, would cost more than $1,000.

Officials have continued to state that more than 1 million tickets would be available for as low as $28, but noted that pricing varies by sport, competition and ticket category.

The release also noted that registered fans who were not selected in the first draw or who did not meet their ticket maximum would be automatically entered into future draws, with more ticket drops and registration opportunities coming in the near future.

"If fans don't see their desired sports or sessions in this drop, more tickets may be available in future drops if they haven't reached their Olympic ticket maximum," the release said.

Proposed state legislation and class action lawsuits have taken shape recently in light of Uber driver fraud and concerns of rider safety.

CBS News California Investigates has uncovered a growing number of cases of Uber drivers who have used stolen identities to get hired with the company, suggesting there are hundreds, maybe more, drivers who aren't who they say they are.

"Apparently, you never know who's picking you up," the wife of a victim of employment fraud said, after her husband's identity was stolen by someone who then used it to get a job at Uber.

He's not alone. In an earlier investigation, CBS News California Investigates discovered a number of people who got a 10-99 tax form in the mail from Uber, even though they had never driven for the ride-share company.

Federal Trade Commission data shows the agency has received nearly 400 complaints about Uber identity theft fraud, dating back to 2021, from victims all over the country. Many of them are saying things like, "I have never worked for Uber in my life." They reported impostors, who could be driving for Uber right now, used their full name, social security number and address.

"I was unaware of this issue until we learned about your reporting, so we are reaching out to the company because we believe this needs to be addressed," State Senator Josh Becker said.

The senator has authored two recent laws that seek to protect Californians from identity theft. The senator said businesses like Uber need to do more to protect consumers.

"Especially if they know this kind of fraud is happening, we have to hold them responsible to address it," Becker said.

There is now a second class-action lawsuit that's been filed, claiming that Uber is aware of this type of fraud, but hasn't done enough to prevent and address it. So is the lawsuit sending a message to Uber?

"I mean, that is the hope. You know, part of what we're trying to do is not just get money, but we're trying to get Uber to correct its policies," Consumer Fraud Attorney Kenny Murena said.

Murena is based in Florida and filed the suit late last month. Another class action lawsuit was filed against Uber in California in 2023. Both allege that Uber doesn't properly screen its drivers.

"Uber doesn't necessarily know who many of its drivers are," Murena said. He added that many passengers are "potentially in the car with someone who would not otherwise be able to become an Uber driver without having used the personal information of a non-driver."

Daniel Yanisse, CEO of Checkr, a San Francisco-based company that conducts background checks for Uber, said in general, about half of resumes and job applications have some type of fake information on them.

"It's a spectrum, right? You can go from people lying just a little bit on their job experience, their dates, their titles, to inflate it, to look better," Yanisse said. "That's been happening for some time, but now we're seeing more and more, all the way to a completely synthetic candidate that's a fake person, nothing on it is real."

Checkr recently launched identity verification, a new tool that allows employers to confirm their potential employees are who they say they are, looking at things like names that don't match IDs or selfies made with AI. Yanisse said it's also a problem that the federal government has no safeguard to keep people from using the same social security numbers for multiple driver accounts.

"And maybe 20, 30, 40 different people are using the same identity to get access to the platform in an illegitimate way," Yanisse said.

Senator Becker has now called on Uber to do something to address this widespread and growing fraud.

"If you're sitting in the back of a car, I take a lot of ride share, you don't want to be wondering if this person is an imposter. We have to give people confidence," he said.

When asked how many taxpayers have received Uber tax earnings forms that indicate fraud, the IRS said it doesn't collect public data on 10-99 complaints.

Uber released the following statement:

"Identity theft and tax fraud are sophisticated, ever-evolving issues that have long impacted a wide range of industries. Uber maintains robust safeguards designed to detect and prevent fraudulent activity, and we continually enhance these systems to address emerging tactics. We disagree with the claims in this complaint."

If anyone believes they are a victim of this type of fraud, email Kristine Lazar at KLazar@cbs.com.

With rain in the forecast over the weekend, temperatures in Southern California will see a sharp drop starting Thursday.

"Starting (today), a cooling trend is expected with increasing onshore flow ahead of a low-pressure system for the weekend," said a statement from the National Weather Service. "Light to moderate precipitation will fall across most of Southern California in two rounds."

Despite Wednesday's temperatures sitting between 5 and 10 degrees above the average across the region, gradual cooling was expected to start early Thursday, everywhere except the Inland Empire, where temperatures were still expected to be above 80 degrees. Cooler weather is predicted to continue through next Wednesday, though rain is out of the forecast a day earlier.

At the same time, NWS officials said that there would be elevated winds blowing east through mountain regions and high deserts through the weekend.

Forecasters said that rain will come in two waves over the weekend, with the first round arriving late Friday night and lasting through the early afternoon Saturday. Despite early predictions that the system would be more intense, it has weakened as shifting north.

Predictions indicate that coastal areas can see less than a quarter-inch of rain with little to no accumulation in the desert regions.

The second wave of rain is expected to be a bit stronger as it moves through Southern California on Sunday. Showers will linger through Monday morning, possibly affecting the early morning commuters.

Snow could fall as low as 6,500 feet in mountain ranges, forecasters said.

Come Tuesday next week, dry and seasonable conditions were expected to return with temperatures averaging in the 70s across Southern California.

Mail delivery service has been completely stopped in one Carson neighborhood due to an increase in coyote encounters in the area, neighbors say.

The quiet stretch of Moneta Avenue is now at the center of a dispute with the United States Postal Service after delivery was indefinitely put on hold, according to neighbors, who say it was a mistake.

"Where's my mail?" asked 73-year-old Mike Bunnell, who was so surprised to see that his mail service had been suspended that he went to his local post office to challenge their claim.

He says that he received a letter citing safety concerns over a dog on his property, but that the big problem is that he doesn't even own a dog.

"There's no dog here. Not mine, I don't own a dog," he said. "This never happened."

When he spoke with USPS officials, he was told that there had been a mistake and that the incorrect letter was sent to residents on Moneta Ave.

"They said they made a mistake, it wasn't supposed to be a dog letter, it was supposed to be a coyote letter, and I said I haven't seen any coyotes either," Bunnell said.

The USPS claim, however, comes on the heels of a string of at least four coyote attacks in recent weeks, three of which involved children in the Carson area. After the series of attacks, California Department of Fish & Wildlife officials captured a coyote that they said was connected to three of the instances, and it was euthanized.

Despite that, Bunnell and his neighbor, Tom Williams, who received the same notice, are frustrated by the inconvenience.

"They're holding us responsible for wild animals in the community here," Williams said, noting that USPS employees told him service wouldn't resume until the issue is resolved.

Now, after living in the same home for 74 years without issue, he says the problem has become one that could cost a pretty penny.

"So we're going to have to pay a private pest control person to come out, four-five hundred dollars, up to a few thousand dollars, maybe more," Williams said. "And even if there was one that was caught, how do you know that was the one that was here? What is it going to take to get our mail back?"

USPS officials said that residents can continue to pick up their mail at their local post office.

An hours-long pursuit finally came to an end after the alleged DUI suspect led California Highway Patrol officers through Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties on Tuesday night.

The chase began at around 8:40 p.m. on the westbound 91 Freeway in Anaheim, but continued north into Los Angeles County, then headed back south towards the Inland Empire, CHP officers said. After briefly driving through Riverside County on the 15 Freeway heading east, the driver then merged onto the 60 Freeway heading towards San Bernardino County.

Minutes later, the driver then headed back into Riverside County, where they exited the freeway in Jurupa Valley. They then got back onto the freeway, headed through San Bernardino County and wound back up in LA County in the East San Gabriel Valley. In what wound up being a lengthy cycle, the suspect then drove back into Orange County on the 57 Freeway.

Eventually, just before 10:30 p.m., the suspect merged onto the 22 Freeway before exiting and came to a stop at a gas station in Garden Grove, where they were taken into custody without incident. They have not yet been identified.

As many as six CHP patrol cars were seen chasing the car at one point.

Officers said that the chase began in Orange County after the silver pickup truck was seen swerving, which led them to upgrade the suspect's want to possible DUI.

The chase continued along the 91, 605, 405, 71, 15 and 60 Freeways.

A 57-year-old man was arrested by Culver City Police Department officers last week for an alleged attempted child abduction that occurred at Fox Hills Park.

Police were called to the park, which is located at 5809 Green Valley Circle, just before 12:55 p.m. on Monday, March 30, for reports of an attempted kidnapping involving a young child. Witnesses described the suspect as an adult male who was wearing a red hoodie and was last seen near the southwest part of the park.

"According to investigators, the suspect approached a four-year-old child at the playground and attempted to lure the child away from their parent by telling the child to come with him," the release said. "The parent immediately noticed the interaction and quickly moved toward the child."

Police also noted that another bystander also recognized what was happening and approached the child and suspect to assist. When the two other adults approached, the suspect then left the park, police said.

Responding officers immediately began searching the park and the surrounding area, where they learned that a person matching the suspect's description was seen in a car that was stopped in the parking structure of a nearby shopping center, according to the CCPD release.

The suspect was located and detained at the location and identified as 57-year-old Los Angeles man Marlo Jeffrey Hampstead. He was arrested and charged for attempted kidnapping, police said.

"At no time was the child physically taken or harmed," according to the release.

Police said that the incident highlights the importance of community awareness, quick action and rapid police response.

"While this appears to be an isolated incident and there have been no other similar reports, parents and caregivers are encouraged to remain vigilant in public spaces and report suspicious activity immediately," the release said.

Anyone who knows more about the attempted kidnapping was urged to contact Culver City PD at (310) 253-6202.

During the evacuations, Lt. Bruce Koss said the officers "encountered a vicious dog which attacked one of the officers," and the police fatally shot the dog.

Koss said the officer who was attacked fell backwards before he was bitten by the dog, which caused him to hit his head on the pavement. He was taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition.

The bomb squad has rendered the explosive devices safe and remains on scene collecting evidence.

One of the individuals involved in the initial traffic stop was detained by police for further questioning.

Nearby streets will remain closed for the next couple of hours.

Southern California residents are voicing their frustrations over the cost of tickets for the LA28 Olympic Games, which event organizers have billed as affordable, especially after getting early access last week.

One community that is particularly upset about the ticket prices is Inglewood, where multiple events are slated to be held at SoFi Stadium and the Intuit Dome. Despite the proximity to their homes, they say that cost will likely keep them from being able to enjoy the games in person.

"I wasn't expecting the tickets to be inexpensive; I wasn't that naive," said Tracy Dworsky, whose family, including her two daughters and their husbands, had put aside $2,000 to buy tickets.

They quickly found out that wouldn't be anywhere near enough, with each ticket costing hundreds of dollars and a 24% service fee to boot.

"It felt like these were being made available for the super rich, honestly," Dworsky said. "I didn't buy anything. Disappointed."

Lifelong Inglewood resident Yolanda Davidson, who lives just blocks from the Olympic venues, is equally as disappointed, especially since they'll have to deal with the chaos surrounding the events, like the trash, crowds, traffic and so on.

"We shouldn't just have to bear all of the burden of the Olympics; we should be able to participate," Davidson said.

Typical events, like the Super Bowl or large musical acts like Taylor Swift and Beyonce, at either of the venues, have clogged city streets and created a safety issue, Davidson says.

"Kanye West was here last week, and people were trying to make it over to Centinela Hospital and they said it took them over 40 minutes just from around the corner on Sage," she said.

She's pushing for all local law enforcement officers to wear body cameras by the time the games come to Los Angeles, a sentiment echoed by local small business owner Esaul Martin.

"We're gonna learn a lot about, after the World Cup, once we see what kind of crowd that brings and how heavy traffic could be, what kinds of tourists we get, how many people are gonna come to our doors, to our city," Martin said. "I think it'll teach us a lot and we'll learn a little more about what we need to do."

He says pushing safety is of the utmost importance, so people can see Inglewood shine while in the global spotlight.

"It's important for us to make sure they understand the city is safe. It's safe and a great city. It's a growing city, we're gonna have some roadblocks and things, we're gonna have to continue to learn as a city and a business," he said. "But, I think we're doing just fine."

LA28 initially said that approximately one million tickets would be as cheap as $28 and recently said that half of all tickets sold would be under $200. They also said that more affordable tickets would be available in the coming ticket drops, not just the ones for Southern California residents.

An investigation is underway in Long Beach after a family discovered human remains during an Easter egg hunt in the area near DeForest Park and Wetlands on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Officers told CBS LA that they were called to the 5900 block of De Forest Avenue at around 5 p.m. upon learning of the discovery.

"Due to the circumstances, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office is responding to the scene," police said.

Family members told CBS LA off-camera that what appeared to be the human skull and other bones of a small child were discovered in the middle of their holiday tradition while children were looking for Easter eggs. The discovery was made just feet from the entrance of the park's walking path, where residents often head out for exercise or daily walks.

The possible human skull that a family found during an Easter egg hunt at DeForest Park on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

Two officers were seen covering the object with a canopy.

"At first we saw the family there, doing like an Easter egg hunt, but they were freaking out a little bit," said Marc Zaldana, who was walking along the path when he encountered the children in what he said were the moments after the disturbing discovery was made. "I can only imagine, like for them, finding a dead, another kid. Must be tragic for them."

As the investigation continues, police said that details would remain limited. Long Beach police officers were still on the scene as of 10 p.m. Saturday night, and the bones were recovered from the ground early Monday morning.

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt lashed out against a story from the LA Times that questioned whether he is living within the city limits, a requirement for the election.

Pratt's home was destroyed in the Palisades Fire.

"They want to try and write a hit piece about me about my residence?" Pratt said on social media. "They want to attack me for not living in the Palisades while running for mayor. Hey, brain surgeon, my house burned down."

CBS LA contacted Pratt's campaign for an interview. They directed us to the video he posted on social media.

"Pratt daddy used his SBA Disaster Loan to get an Airstream craned into my burned-out lot in the Palisades," Pratt said.

An LA Times spokesperson said they stood by their story and the reporting.

"The Times learned that Mr. Pratt was living in Carpinteria and contacted him and those around him for comment," the spokesperson wrote. "We stand by our story and the reporting of our journalists."

Former LA City Councilman and county supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky does not believe the issue will affect Pratt's ability to run for mayor.

"Common sense tells me he lost his home in the Palisades," Yaroslavsky said. "He's got to find a place to live. I'm not sure this is an issue that gets any traction."

Yaroslavsky and his colleagues at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs recently released a poll showing a wide-open race for LA Mayor. A whopping 40% of voters remain undecided. Among the top three candidates are:

Mayor Karen Bass in first with 25%

Pratt in second with 11%

Councilwoman Nithya Raman in third with 9%

In California's election system, the top two vote-getters in the June primary will face off in the November general election. If a candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the June primary, they win the election outright, forgoing the November election.

With so many undecided voters, Pratt sees an opening.

"I was born here, went to school at USC," he said. "I bleed Dodger blue. This is my city, and I'm taking it back."

A Santa Ana Cesar Chavez mural is getting a redo by the artist who originally painted it. Abram Moya Jr. said the repainting just has to get done after the disappointing allegations against Chavez came to light.

The 76-year-old said he's honoring a lesser-known labor organizer who pre-dated Chavez -- Bert Corona. Moya said he originally wanted to honor Corona in the Jackson Street mural five years ago.

"My original suggestion was to put Bert Corona here in the first place, but the community wanted Cesar Chavez," he said.

When Moya begins a mural, he always starts with the eyes. "I think the eyes are very important. It tells all," he said as Corona's face begins to take shape.

Abram Moya Jr. paints a portrait of Bert Corona, replacing Cesar Chavez.

The original mural was done by Moya and a collective of young artists, who painted vignettes of the Latino community, with the biggest portrait being that of Cesar Chavez.

"Here was a leader that the community liked. And they put him on a pedestal. And then now they come out with this stuff," Moya said.

Chavez was someone he'd painted numerous times before, but Moya always felt Bert Corona, whose activism pre-dated the Chicano movement of the 1960s, deserved his flowers.

"He's not a flamboyant person. He was more of a quiet guy. He liked to get things done," Moya said. So, Moya is painting on, with full approval from the community, the mayor, and Corona's family.

Though Chavez's portrait will be replaced, the slogan "Si Se Puede" or "Yes You Can" will remain.

"It belongs to the United Farmworkers, not Cesar Chavez. But the farm workers, and the campesinos, that's different," he said. Another phrase will be added to the bottom of the mural, "Un dano contra uno es un dano contra todo," translated, it says "A harm to one is a harm to all."

Once Moya finishes the mural this weekend, he hopes it sparks curiosity. "Get educated. Learn about him, showing the positiveness about Chicano and Latino culture," Moya said.
