A second jet skier who went missing off the coast in Long Beach on Sunday night has been found alive and hypothermic, the U.S. Coast Guard says.

Long Beach Fire Department Captain Jack Crabtree told CBS LA that they were contacted at around 10 p.m. on Sunday after learning that two members of a large group of people riding jet skis were unaccounted for near the Alamitos Bay Landing.

Soon after authorities began their search, they found a woman in her 40s, who has not been identified yet, on a breakwall where she was able to flag down some fishermen who contacted LBFD, Crabtree said.

The man, identified as 53-year-old Paul Anthony Carbullido, was found at around 11 a.m. on Monday, 16 hours after the search began. Firefighters said he was found about three miles from the Seal Beach Pier and suffering from hypothermia.

"The woman reported that she and Carbullido had rented two personal watercraft and departed from Rainbow Harbor earlier that evening. While operating the watercraft outside the breakwall, Carbullido fell into the water," a news release from USCG officials said.

When the woman entered the water to assist Carbullido, she was unsuccessful.

"She then attempted to reboard her watercraft and start the engine but was unable to do so. The woman re-entered the water and swam for approximately an hour before reaching the breakwall," the Coast Guard said.

Long Beach officials said one jet ski was located around 1:15 a.m. and around 1:45 a.m., the second was found in the open water past the sea wall. Both were spotted by the Coast Guard helicopter.

The owners of a Bellflower market that was looted during a street takeover over the weekend say that the alleged burglars caused approximately $30,000 in damages, on top of the stolen goods.

It happened early Saturday at the intersection of Bellflower and Somerset boulevards, where Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies say more than 100 vehicles were taking part in a sideshow. At the same time, nearly three dozen people are suspected of forcing entry into A-Z Market, where they ransacked the family-run business.

"I was in shock. Total shock," said Steven Abdullatif, a co-owner of the market. "It was devastating."

He says that he watched the break-in unfold from home via surveillance cameras, including the moments when someone used an electric saw to break into the store. After that, chaos erupted, with dozens of masked people swarming the business. As the crowd grew larger, Abdullatif says someone ripped the security cameras off the exterior of their store.

"I've seen them coming in the store, looting, jumping all over. They went over the counter, broke it," Abdullatif said. "It's like they are having fun doing this thing."

When he arrived an hour later, he found complete disarray, with merchandise and shattered glass covering the floor of the store.

"Within 10 minutes, all your hard working going off; it breaks my heart," Abdullatif said. "We've built it with the whole family. My mom, dad, brother, sister; we've built it with love."

He said that he immediately called 911 upon seeing the surveillance footage, but LASD deputies said their response was delayed because of the dozens of cars blocking the intersection, and ultimately, their way to the store.

Since the break-in, Abdullatif says that they've already replaced the glass on the front door with their own money, but they're hoping for help from their community as they continue working to replace things like the broken countertops and refrigerator doors.

Abdullatif had a message to those who invaded his family's privacy and livelihoods.

"Don't do this to other businesses, because they work very hard to make a living," he said. "Everything is so expensive these days, and we're just trying to make it through."

Los Angeles County deputies are also searching for nearly 30 other people who are connected to a string of similar crimes at an AutoZone in East LA, which was also ransacked during street takeovers.

For the first time in 50 years, California could see a new nuclear power project at one of the country's largest trade hubs.

It involves small modular reactors, known as SMRs, which would generate electricity for the Port of Long Beach and the ships that pass through. Startup company Bluecore Energy, launched less than a year ago, will develop the new technology.

"We're a few years away from the biggest energy crisis in a generation," founder and CEO Kofi Asante said.

The SMRs are designed to float on barges.

"My team and I took nuclear reactor technology that's been running power plants safely for 70 years, made it smaller and put it on a barge," Asante said.

The port signed a cooperation agreement with the Federal Maritime Administration last month to help establish safety standards for the technology. Separately, the port has already leased a space at Berth 48 to Bluecore, where the company is building and testing its reactor.

Bluecore said one SMR could power 15,000 homes.

However, the project could face some hurdles, mainly the 1976 ban California placed on new nuclear construction. It's unclear if SMRs are included in that prohibition.

"This is very unprecedented," USC engineering professor Dr. Najm Meshkati said. "However, it was expected because there is a resurgence in nuclear power in the U.S., in the large reactor and small reactor."

Meshkati also sits on the state's independent safety panel for Diablo Canyon, but made it clear he was speaking only for himself, not the committee. He said the physics behind small reactors isn't new, but placing one on a barge in a busy working port is a novel idea that should come with tougher, independent oversight.

"We need to look at all these sources of energy equally and simultaneously but make sure that each one of them is implemented with the safest possible consideration," Meshkati said.

Bluecore said it's moving fast. The company hasn't filed an application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission yet but the two sides are reportedly meeting on Monday.

For now, the project remains in the early stages. As it progresses, it could reshape how and where California gets its power. Meshkati said the public has to stay involved with the process.

"If there is a public meeting, please go there," he said. "Please question. Please keep the feet of the regulators and the industry people to the fire."

Southern California Edison says that Public Safety Power Shutoffs could occur more frequently, impact more customers and last longer than usual in 2026 due to rising fire risk.

"When it's hot, dry and windy, fires can move quickly," an online article posted by SoCal Edison said. "In those conditions, SCE may need to temporarily turn off electricity in high risk areas. While being without power can create significant hardships, this precaution is necessary to help keep communities safe."

Public Safety Power Shutoffs, or PSPS, occur during periods of high fire danger. They occur across California when utility companies shut off the power to certain areas in order to reduce the risk of electrical equipment causing a fire due to any combination of strong winds, low humidity or dry vegetation.

SCE says that its process for determining when to put a PSPS into effect has changed for several reasons, including:

a new formula that "better predicts when weather conditions could increase the risk of electric equipment causing a significant fire"

refined wind speed triggers that help determine when power should be turned off

determining if unusually high wind speeds call for an earlier power shutoff

"While PSPS events can be disruptive, they are a critical tool to help reduce wildfire risk," SCE said in an Instagram post announcing the changes.

Officials say that the increased use of PSPS could impact customers who have never experienced a PSPS before. As such, they shared a list of tips to prepare for a potential shutoff. Along with signing up for alerts from SCE, they advised the use of portable power stations and portable generators, visiting community resource centers for essentials, preparing supplies and making a plan in the event of an emergency.

In recent years, SCE equipment has been connected to the start of several devastating wildfires in Southern California, including the Thomas and Woolsey fires in 2018 and the 2022 Fairview Fire in Hemet

The company was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice in late 2025 for their alleged connection to the ignition of the Eaton Fire, which killed 19 people. In early August, the Los Angeles County Fire Department released the results of an 18-month investigation into the cause of the fire, which they determined to be from electrical arcing on an out-of-service transmission tower.

SCE has since taken responsibility for the fire and established a compensation fund for victims.

More information on SoCal Edison's Public Safety Power Shutoff program can be found on their website.

"Going forward, I mean, I'm just going to be late to work because I don't have any other way to get him to school and as you can see there's so much traffic," parent Cindy Pac said.

Crossing guards are advising students on e-bikes who were unaware of the new rule to check in at the office. Another dad rode his daughter to school on his e-bike, dropping her off.

"I think the decision to ban it definitely helped allow us to push back getting one for her," parent Steve Tait said. "She has a pedal bike and I think that's a great concept."

Newport Mesa Unified is the first school district in the state to prohibit e-bikes except on high school campuses.

With rising numbers of accidents and injuries, school board members say student safety is their top concern.

She was rescued from the area by firefighters and assessed on their boat.
A group of Palisades Fire survivors and condominium owners have been unable to rebuild because they have been trapped in an odd legal limbo, preventing new construction on their destroyed units.

Hundreds have felt helpless in the Via De La Paz, Pacific Palisades condominium complex, as the wildfire incinerated half of it.

Two men in the complex whose condos burned started pleading with judges and lawmakers to intervene. More than a year later, they believe help may be on the way. State lawmakers have unanimously passed a legislative fix.

At issue are 50-year-old legal documents that expired without most condo owners realizing it.

"It's a breath of life for 107 families. We will be able to reinstate our governing documents," David Greifinger said.

CCNRs, as they're known, typically enable fixes like a new roof and give HOA boards the authority to use insurance payouts.

While about 93% of condo owners immediately voted to reinstate theirs, the law requires 100% consent to either do so or adopt new documents.

Via De La Paz, Pacific Palisades condominium complex.

He leads the minority opposition, calling for the drafting of all new documents.

May said he lost faith in the previous board's ability to manage and fears that condo owners could face unexpected rebuilding costs.

"A few holdouts blocked this community from receiving $40 million worth of insurance funds, and we really do not have the time to wait because there are several families that will lose access to disaster aid," Irwin said.

Breifinger was recently elected the board's new president and says it's committed to capping costs and updating the CCNRs through a simpler amendment process.

"We've gotten bids from three very reputable contractors. They were all very much well under our insurance proceeds," Breifinger said.

A few survivors have already moved back into remediated Via De La Paz condos. Next to weigh in will be the governor.

I know where that pig comes from and I've seen that pig before,'" Harrison said.

Eventually, someone else captured the pig, which is now being cared for at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter. Officials say that it will stay there until Thursday, August 20, unless its rightful owner comes to pick it up. After that point, it would likely be transferred to another shelter that is more suitable for pigs outside of Los Angeles.

"We're just waiting to see if the owner's gonna come get the pig, or, a lot of people kind of want the pig," Harrison said. "There's a lot of people out there who love this pig."

A Bellflower liquor store was ransacked early Saturday morning near the same intersection where more than 100 vehicles were taking part in a street takeover, according to Los Angeles County deputies.

In a news release shared Sunday, LASD officials said that they were called to A-Z Market in the 15100 block of Bellflower Boulevard, near Somerset Boulevard, after someone reported seeing as many as 30 people breaking into a business at the intersection.

"Upon arrival, deputies observed what appeared to be a street takeover," the release said. "Approximately 100-150 vehicles were stopped in the roadway and within the intersection, blocking access to the business."

Once deputies were able to make their way through the crowd, they found that the window of the liquor store had been broken and the business had been ransacked, the release said.

"A review of surveillance footage showed three unknown suspects using power tools to break the front window and cut the lock to the security gate, allowing approximately 30-40 additional unknown suspects to enter the business and ransack it," according to the release.

Deputies said the people were inside for about two minutes before they exited and joined the crowd surrounding the intersection.

While multiple citations were issued for the street takeover, deputies said that no arrests have been made in connection with the burglary, which they estimate resulted in approximately $30,000 in damages and inventory loss.

The incident comes at the same time that LASD detectives have released photos of more than two dozen people whom they are seeking to identify for their alleged part in a string of AutoZone burglaries in East Los Angeles last week, which also occurred near street takeovers.

A Pasadena homeowner came face-to-face with a group of would-be burglars who were trying to break into his home on Friday night.

The homeowner, who wished to remain anonymous, said that his home surveillance cameras captured the group of at least four masked men trying to enter through the back of his home. Despite a series of warnings from the security system, the suspects continued.

"It is unsettling. They were brazen, cavalier," the man said. "Nothing was going to deter them."

The cameras captured a car driving up his street in Upper Hastings Ranch before stopping next to his driveway. Minutes later, he got an alert that there was motion on his property.

"When they drove by, the security lights went on. Came back, the security lights went on," the man said. "They came right through the backyard, your men in masks, fully covered with gloves and marched into my backyard."

As he watched them getting closer to the sliding glass doors at the back of his home, the security system's alarm started to go off.

"I ran downstairs. I didn't know there was four of them," he said. "When I saw four men in masks with gloves through my window, casing my house, it was a shock."

The men took off running, at which point the homeowner quickly called 911. Despite their fast response, the suspects had already escaped.

He's taking the incident as a chance to warn his neighbors to stay alert.

"I want everyone to be vigilant. When the fires came through, we were Pasadena Strong. I want to continue to be Pasadena Strong. I want everyone to know this is happening," he said.

Even though the group left empty-handed, the homeowner says that they took something far more valuable than one of his belongings.

"You can't replace the feeling of security at home; our house is our refuge, and if that is taken away, it is taken away for life," he said.

Pasadena police said that no arrests have been made, but the incident came at a time when they've increased patrols in the area.

He was trying to hit me before, I think, before I got to the trees," said the woman who was almost hit.
A San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department detective was wounded during a shootout in the Antelope Valley on Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

At around 3:15 p.m., Los Angeles County Fire Department crews were called to the 13000 block of E. Avenue R, near 130th Street East, in the Littlerock area for a gunshot victim, department officials told CBS LA.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, who have taken over the investigation, told CBS LA that the SBSD deputies were serving a search warrant at a home in the area when a shooting occurred. Law enforcement sources said that the warrant was being conducted in connection with a narcotics investigation.

The scene of a shootout between San Bernardino County deputies and an armed suspect in the Antelope Valley on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026.

At the latest, department officials said the detective was in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery.

"There was an exchange of gunfire. We do not know how many shots were fired at this point. Homicide will determine that based on the facts and evidence," Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during a news conference after the shooting. "The suspect, he was armed, dangerous and he was willing to shoot it out with the police. That's a very dangerous individual, in my opinion."

The suspect was also fatally wounded during the shootout. He was identified nearly two weeks after the shooting as Eduardo Sanchez Figueroa, 49, by LASD officials.

No other injuries were immediately reported in the incident and it's unknown if anyone has been taken into custody.

Aerial footage from the scene of the shooting showed more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles in a remote part of the Antelope Valley. A large part of one property in the area had been blocked off by crime scene tape, including two white SUVs with several vehicle doors ajar.

During the news conference, Luna said that "there's a lot of information that we don't know yet," and that he wasn't sure if there was actually a warrant being served at the time.

"We're still piecing a lot of things together, bringing in more resources. In regards to the location where this incident happened, it is an extremely active investigation," he said. "I do want to stress ... there is no current threat to our community at this time."

San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus also spoke at the news conference, saying that the detective was shot in the lower ribcage.

"We have a lot to be thankful for when these things happen, of course, with any of our employees in these critical incidents," Dicus said, thanking LASD for their support in the investigation and their work in transporting the injured deputy to the Antelope Valley Hospital via helicopter.

Dicus said that the detective is a veteran in his 30s who has been with the department since 2014.

Some West Hollywood residents still can't move back into their homes almost one month after a broken pipe flooded streets and buildings.

Although the floodwaters have receded, bills are still piling up for residents like Firozeh Daneshiansani.

"I've been very conservative about how much to eat, how much to drink," Daneshiansani said. "I try to just have a coffee a day but it's very hard living in a hotel."

Daneshiansani has been living in her hotel room for nearly a month after the broken water main flooded her living room on July 16. Her apartment is unrecognizable because of the severe water damage.

"Very damaged. I don't like it. Very, very very sad," Daneshiansani said.

She's not the only one waiting for relief.

"The frustrating thing is the renters insurance is telling us that we need to file a claim with LADWP," property manager Joe Artle said. "LADWP is telling us you have to go through your renters insurance first."

Artle said his residents are trying to get their lives back on track, but that progress is being derailed by confusion.

On LADWP's website, it said it's providing temporary housing for people who need it and reimbursing meal expense for those without access to a working kitchen.

LADWP hopes to make a final decision on claims within 45 days. However, residents said the utility company told them the process could take six months.

"I don't have the patience for it," Artle said. "It was their fault. I don't think we need to suffer any longer. I mean, let's get it done."

Daneshiansani said she just wants to move back into her home.

"At this point, I just want to feel safe. Go back home and be able to sleep at night," she said.

Nidorf Juvenile Hall. The LA County District Attorney's Office said his mother Nickia Tyonia Randall allegedly tried to pass him two latex balls containing fentanyl pills during a visit in Dec. 2025.

Randall faces similar charges. Prosecutors issued a warrant for her arrest on Feb. 6, but she has not been apprehended.

Jester was one of two teenage boys convicted of killing the rapper, whose legal name was Bashar Barakah Jackson, in 2020.

Jackson was staying at a rental home in the Hollywood Hills in 2020 when Jester, who was 15 at the time, the other teen and two men broke into the house.

Because of California law, the LA County District Attorney's Office did not name the teenagers when they charged them in 2020, identifying them only as a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old.

During the trial in 2023, the 15-year-old admitted that he pistol-whipped Jackson and shot him three times before the suspects fled the home.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Jester was serving a seven-year sentence in juvenile hall for the murder.

"Deijae Jester committed a devastating crime when he took the life of Pop Smoke," Hochman said. "Because he was a juvenile, the law afforded him an opportunity for redemption. Instead of embracing that opportunity, he chose to traffic one of the deadliest drugs imaginable from inside a juvenile detention facility."

Five people were arrested this week following a lengthy investigation into a scheme involving mail theft, fraud and identity theft at a Glendale apartment complex, according to police.

In a news release shared by the Glendale Police Department, officers said that their investigation began after they received multiple reports of people who were accessing and removing mail from various apartment mailboxes at a complex in the 500 block of W. Colorado Street.

"The suspects were witnessed removing mail from mailboxes belonging to other residents," the release said.

While investigating the claims, detectives said that they were able to identify multiple suspects and connect them to specific apartment units at the complex.

"Detectives learned that the suspects were using other individuals' personal identifying information to fraudulently obtain credit cards, which were then mailed to apartment units within the complex," the release said. "The investigation further revealed that the suspects had tampered with mailbox keyholes and replaced them with 'dummy' keyholes, allowing them to gain unauthorized access to the mailboxes."

All five of the suspects were arrested on Thursday when search warrants were executed at the apartment complex. Police identified them as Glendale residents Razmik Barseghyan, 36, Robert Poghosyan, 27, Vahan Kalashyan, 35, Armen Harutyunyan, 26 and Artyom Militonyan, 27.

While serving the warrants, officers said that they found a "significant quantity" of personal identifying information belonging to other people, credit card re-encoding devices, cash, gold and numerous credit cards.

Each was booked at the Glendale Police Jail on various fraud, identity theft and burglary-related charges, police said, noting that they plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration in the coming days.

Anyone who knows more was urged to contact Glendale PD's Financial Crimes Unit at 818-548-4840.
