Temperatures tumble in North Texas on first day of meteorological winter ahead of midweek warmup

First freeze of the season expected at DFW

Happy first day of meteorological winter: Monday was the coldest day we've had at DFW since last February.

The high of 39° tied a record for the lowest maximum set back in 1985. A cold light rain dominated the day; the morning low was 36°, so temperatures all day only varied by three degrees.

Skies will clear out Monday night and radiational cooling will allow temperatures to drop to below freezing for the first time at DFW this season.

Our typical first-freeze date is  Nov. 22, so this one arrives about 10 days late. Last year, the first freeze at DFW hit on Dec. 6. Almost all of North Texas had already, so no freeze warning.

Remember to protect the 4 "Ps"...Pets, pipes, plants, and people!

We are up and down this week ahead. We'll warm into our 60s on Wednesday before another cold rain shows up on Thursday. Don't be surprised if we see some sleet with that rain on Thursday; the ground should be too warm to cause any road problems.

It warms right back up, and we'll be back in the 60s by Saturday.

The long-range forecast is for a slight chance of above-normal temperatures this month.
