Above-average temperatures return to North Texas after "false fall"

Tranquil summer weather takes hold in North Texas after "false fall"

Highs on Wednesday topped out just around 90. We are expecting temperatures closer to mid-90s for the rest of the week and this weekend. We are not expecting any rain chances during this period.

Wednesday marks the official peak of the Atlantic hurricane season

There is only one system being watched out for in the Atlantic, and there is only a 20% that it will develop into a tropical storm.

This lull in activity around the peak is extremely rare. The Azores high has shifted south because of a core of cooler water near the center of the Atlantic basin. This has increased shear for tropical waves coming off Africa and allowed for more dust (dry air) to interact with development. The forecast continues for an active season.

There has been only one named storm so far this season, Erin.  Erin became a Category Five hurricane but kept out in open water. This season echoes 1992, a single August hurricane before a long lull. In 1992, that one hurricane was Andrew, and it is one of only four Category 5 hurricanes in our history to strike the United States.

What happened after September 10th in 1992? Three more hurricanes were expected as activity at the end of the month exploded. I suspect the same will happen this year with the Madden-Julian oscillation sitting over the mid-Atlantic by the end of the month.

Tranquil summer weather ahead with warm afternoons, pleasant mornings

Around here, tranquil summer weather has taken hold. Rain is not expected in the week ahead. Get out and enjoy the fine mornings and evenings; it will be a little hot during the afternoons. We are not expecting the dewpoints to get much out of the low 60s, not much in a heat index in the week ahead.
