Fort Pike in eastern New Orleans was reopened to visitors Friday, June 12, 2009. Fort Pike, shut down by hurricane damage for most of the past four years, reopened to visitors. The fort's construction began in 1819 in the eastern outskirts of New Orleans as the first of a system of seacoast forts started by President James Monroe.
