The latest game-to-film adaptation that has the online world talking is "Battleship." The movie's trailer, which was released on July 27, features an international navy facing off against extraterrestrial foes. Whether this will bomb the box office or sail to victory has yet to be seen, but with an all-star cast featuring Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Alexander Skarsg
Are you game?
Not many people know this, but "Juamanji," starring Robin Williams, was actually a book-to-movie adaptation. Milton Bradley made the board game after the film was released. Secretly, we watch this movie, and tearfully hope that the game could have been as cool.
It's not just a game anymore
The whodunnit? game -- named "Cluedo" for you U.K. folks -- made for excellent movie fodder in 1985. However, the ending should have been obvious: Everyone knows the guilty party is always Mrs. Peacock in the dining room with the candlestick.
This is no game
This nerdy game-based flick based on "Dungeons and Dragons" couldn't even captivate the fanboy audience. That's saying a lot.
The candy man can
This movie is due to be out in 2013, so there's still some time to make suggestions for what this film should be about. We're saying it should be a horror film, starring Bruce Campbell and Felicia Day as dentists who get sucked into an alternate universe where gummy bears bite your heads off, lollypops emit toxic sticky substances and gum balls -- well, we'll leave that to your imagination. In Candy Land, no one can hear you scream.
Faster than the speed of light
Apparently, "Hot Wheels AcceleRacers" is an animated series of movies made my Mattel. But, we swear we saw this movie on the big screen recently. We think it was called "Fast 5." No, wait, "Gone in 60 Seconds." No, we think it was "Cars 2."
Lego this movie idea
Rumor has it, the team that made "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" is working with Warner Bros. to make a Lego movie. Civil engineers out there are cheering, while erector sets out there are waiting for their chance to make it big in Hollywood.
Robots in disguise
Arguably the most successful toy to ever make movie bucks, "Transformers" has spawned three sequels, international fandom for its stars and too many grown men reliving their youth. Please, please make it stop. If we see another child crying because their father dragged them to "Transformers 7: Rise of the Sun on Jupiter," we don't think we can take it.
CEO Brian Goldner said the movie was going to be about "more contemporary people, and their powers are much more contemporary in nature, and more consistent with the people who play our games." So, basically, they're making a movie that will appeal to the fans of the game and ONLY the fans of the game. You can hear the 20-sided dice clinking inside Magic players' hands in anticipation.
Monster ball
The "Monsterpocalypse" game/film is tied to Tim Burton, so you can picture creepy crawling things that will haunt your nightmares in a cute and cuddly way when this flick hits theaters in 2013.
Be careful what you wish for
Teenage girls at slumber parties can rejoice; the game that told them whether or not Bobby has a crush on them is being made into a feature length film, unnecessarily but none the less its happening. "Charlie's Angels" director McG is reportedly turning this into an Indiana Jones inspired venture. We're pretty skeptical, besides didn
Even your grandma will love this one
The movies to result from this game are completely acceptable. They are documentaries "Word Wars" and "Scrabylon." No contrived plotlines based on name recognition here, just earnest filmmaking. Kudos to you Scrabble for continuing to be the scholars board game. Stay classy.
Space: the final frontier
"Jumanji" set in space. "Jumanji" basically was a staple of our childhoods, so it should have been left alone or at least not had the blah Kristen Stewart starring in it. The film got mostly positive reviews, but was a box office flop.
Is it worth the risk?
This game has a lot of similarities with "Battleship," so if that movie floats to the top of the box office then it stands to reason this one would too. The global domination game would stand for a good premise for a movie, but so would a film based on Genghis Khan or Napoleon. They too have name recognition.
Solve this movie puzzle
We cannot solve a Rubik's Cube, nor fathom the need for a movie based off of it. Also, how would that even work to begin with? The decision to option a film based on the toy is as puzzling as the toy itself. Oh, the irony.
Searching for ideas
It's a stretch
"Twilight's" Taylor Lautner will be starring in this film inspired by the toy of the same name. The actor is hot off of his "Twilight" success and dropped a starring role in Mattel's "Max Steel" to take up "Stretch Armstrong" so it stands to reason that there is something good about the script, story or production that drew him on board. Or the paycheck was bigger, but here
The game that never ends
This one is still kind of a mystery but it will apparently be about families in the Great Depression, maybe buying property? We like the idea of this one just because we love Monopoly. One request: The movie better not be as long as it takes to win the game. No one has that kind of time.
They're here!
When you run out of board games, Arcade games is your next best bet. Inspired by the basic arcade game "Space Invaders," a movie is now in the works about, well space invaders. This one could be pretty cool with a big budget and a good plot. But, hello, "Independence Day" anyone?
Asteroids
This one is like "Space Invaders" but instead of invaders you shoot asteroids. Imagine the creativity it will take to turn that premise into a feature-length film. Oh wait, it would take none.
