U.S. Supreme Court at work despite shutdown

WASHINGTON The Supreme Court says its business will go on despite the ongoing government shutdown.

The high court announced Thursday it will hear its first arguments of the year on Monday and continue hearing arguments through at least the end of next week. This comes despite the budget impasse in Congress that has caused the furloughing of hundreds of thousands of government employees.

The court announced on its website that its building will be open to the public during its usual hours.

Justices are scheduled to hear arguments next week over political campaign donation limits. Lawyers are challenging government limits on what individuals can give to candidates, political parties and political action committees in a two-year federal election cycle.
