Teen burglary suspect in Ore. charged with murder

ALBANY, Ore. - An Oregon teenager accused of nighttime break-ins of occupied homes now faces a murder charge.

Police in Albany, about 60 miles south of Portland, learned that 36-year-old Angela Stephenson had been shot last month when her 8-year-old son called 911 to say he'd been awakened by a noise and found his mother bleeding on the kitchen floor and the back door to the apartment unlocked.

On Thursday, 18-year-old Lucius Wilson was arraigned on a charge of killing her. He was already in custody on burglary, rape and other charges. He'd been arrested June 2 running from police.

Investigators said they focused on linking the killing to about 15 break-ins through unlocked doors or windows, mostly in southeast Albany, within a span of a few weeks.

"People are home, obviously at home, in some cases," Lt. Travis Giboney said at the time.

Investigators said Wilson had no known connection to Stephenson, reports CBS affiliate KOIN.

Wilson didn't enter a plea Thursday at a brief hearing. He fought back tears as he conferred with his defense lawyers. Attorney Paul Kuebrich declined to comment, and attorney Elizabeth Baker did not immediately return a call. The next hearing is July 30.

Wilson is accused of rape in a May 7 break-in. In that case, police say a man armed with a pistol broke into a second-story apartment by climbing to the balcony.

He attacked the woman who lived there and then forced her at gunpoint to drive to a credit union and withdraw money from her account, police said.

He's also accused of an armed robbery at a convenience store.
