Report: Ga. teen charged after boy killed in his bedroom

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Police have apprehended a suspect after a 13-year-old boy was shot to death in his bedroom in west Georgia.

Police say witnesses heard gunfire between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday. They said relatives later discovered Nizzear Rodriguez with a gunshot wound when they awoke and called 911. Police say family members were trying to take the boy to a hospital when officers arrived, but it was too late to save him.

The victim had just celebrated his 13th birthday the night before with his grandmother, who was home at the time of the shooting but said she didn't hear anything, reports CBS affiliate WGCL.

Carrollton police Capt. Chris Dodd tells WXIA-TV that authorities believe someone went into the child's bedroom and shot him while he was in bed.

Dodd tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that a 17-year-old Carrollton boy is charged with murder, burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of crimes.

According to the paper, Dodd said that authorities believe there was another individual involved in the shooting and they are trying to identify that person. He also reportedly said that the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identify.

"I'm not ruling that out, that they just went into the wrong apartment looking for another individual," Dodd reportedly told the paper. "We have no information this family was involved in anything, or had been involved in anything."

WSB-TV reports that Nizzear was an eighth-grader at Carrollton Junior High School.
