(CBS/AP) MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. - A Detroit-area woman was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday in the sexual assault and murder of her 2-year-old stepdaughter.
CBS Detroit reports a Macomb County Circuit Jury convicted 30-year-old Renee King of felony murder and child abuse in late February.
The child's biological mother, Lauren Furneaux, brought the little girl to the mobile home King shared with the girl's father on November 20, 2010 - and never saw her again.
Lily Furneaux died from multiple blunt force injuries to the head and a had vaginal injury.
King has denied any wrongdoing. She said the child's head trauma resulted from two accidental falls.
Talking to reporters at the courthouse on Tuesday, Furneaux said she never in her life imagined she'd be dealing with something like this.
"It has been the hardest thing, but the outcome was good," she said.
King's murder conviction carries an automatic penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
