Poll: Reaction to Trump's inauguration similar to 2005, 2013
The public’s reaction to President Trump’s inauguration on Friday was similar to the reaction to President George W. Bush’s second inauguration in 2005 and President Obama’s inauguration in 2013, according to a Gallup survey released Monday.
The poll found that 39 percent said they are more hopeful about the next four years while 30 percent said they are less hopeful. Thirty percent said Mr. Trump’s inauguration made no difference is their feelings about the future.
In 2005, 43 percent said they were more hopeful about the next four years and only a quarter said they were less hopeful. In 2013, 37 percent said they were more hopeful about the next four years and 27 percent said they were less hopeful. When Obama first took office in 2009, 62 percent said they were more hopeful and 11 percent said they were less hopeful.
After the inauguration Friday, 78 percent of Republicans said they are more hopeful and only 3 percent said they are less hopeful. By contrast, only 8 percent of Democrats said they are more hopeful while 56 percent said they are less hopeful.
Forty-six percent said they watched Mr. Trump’s inauguration, 23 percent said they saw coverage and 30 percent said they didn’t pay attention. In 2013, 38 percent said they watched Obama’s second inauguration and in 2005, 40 percent said they watched Bush’s second inauguration.
The poll surveyed 508 adults on Friday with a 5-percentage point margin of error.
