Police search for suspect after armed confrontation at plant

FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. -- One school is on lockdown after a part-time contract employee wounded another worker during an armed confrontation at a nearby South Carolina automotive plant.

Officers were called to the Yanfeng Automotive plant in Fountain Inn shortly before 6 a.m. Friday.

Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds told local news outlets a shot was fired and that one person was hurt. Reynolds couldn't say whether or not the victim had been shot, but said he suffered non-life threatening injuries following a dispute.

Reynolds said officers are searching for a suspect who he identified as David Jerome Butler, 42. Reynolds said Butler has a history of violence and is considered possibly armed and dangerous. CBS affiliate WSPA reports that Butler may be in a blueish green Ford Fusion.

About 100 employees were evacuated but were allowed to re-enter the plant about two hours later. The plant is just off Interstate 385 about 15 miles southeast of Greenville.

WSPA reports Butler served 15 years of a 25-year prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter and was released in 2010.

Butler has also previously been convicted of grand larceny, possession with intent to distribute crack, and criminal domestic violence.

Greenville County Schools said Simpsonville Elementary school is  on lockdown and extra officers were sent to Fountain Inn Elementary School.

A spokesman for the Laurens County Sheriff's Department did not immediately return phone messages Friday.
