Police probe teen "suicide pact" in Massachusetts, New Hampshire

WINTHROP, Mass. -- Police are investigating what they're calling a "suicide pact" that also included a threat against others by students at schools in the Boston area and southern New Hampshire.

Authorities said Thursday that the alleged pact involved students in Winthrop, Tewksbury and Woburn in Massachusetts and in Manchester, New Hampshire. A female student at Winthrop High School was taken into police custody near the school Thursday afternoon.

Police say students posted messages on social media threatening to harm themselves and others. One school in each of the four towns was mentioned in the postings.

Officials at Winthrop High School sent an email to parents alerting them to the suicide pact. The school temporarily was placed in a "hold in place" mode. The email said Tewksbury police notified Winthrop detectives that they had information about a suicide pact that was posted online.

CBS Boston reports the alleged pact originated between two female students - one from Tewksbury and the other from Winthrop.

It started when a female Tewksbury High School student posted to Facebook that she wanted to "get two guns" and "make a suicide pact," reports the station.

According to the station, a female Winthrop student responded to the comment saying, "can we shoot up schools first tho."

The Tewksbury girl then responded, "YO lets do it."

Officials say one of the girls was stopped about a block away from Winthrop High School and was taken into custody. Police say no weapon was recovered.

The other girl was located in Tewksbury Memorial High School and secured and removed. Police say she is getting the appropriate care.

No criminal charges have been filed.
