Police: Girl, 7, found unconscious with plastic bag over head in basement

PHILADELPHIA -- A 7-year-old Philadelphia girl is in critical condition after she was found in the basement of her home with a plastic bag over her head early Wednesday, reports CBS Philly.

Police have released few details about the incident and it's not clear whether it's being investigated as a crime or as an accident.

CBS Philly reports police were already at the home around 1 a.m. Wednesday talking to a woman who reported her 18-year-old son may have stolen her car, the station reports. The woman went inside to retrieve some information about the vehicle, and when she came out, she was carrying the unconscious 7-year-old.

The woman reportedly told police she found the girl in the basement with a plastic bag over her head, which she removed.

Police say the girl wasn't breathing, according to the station. First responders administered CPR and the child was rushed to the hospital.

"We heard screaming and we came out, and the cops were giving the little girl CPR," neighbor Kathy Burgos told the station. "And after that I know they took her to the hospital."

"At this time, we don't know how the 7-year-old child came to have a bag over her head and became unconscious," Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small told CBS Philly. "We are not certain right now if this was an intentional act or if this was a crime or if this was just an accident."

Police are still searching for the woman's teen son after the stolen vehicle was found crashed and abandoned several blocks away, the station reports.
