Parking authority comes up with fine idea for holiday giving

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- This city's response to derelict drivers may sound a little bit canned for the next month.

That's because, as the Lexington Herald-Leader reports, the city's parking authority will accept canned goods as payment for citations from Nov. 16 through Dec. 18 as part of a monthlong "Food for Fines" initiative.

The program allows those who donate 10 canned food items to receive a $15 credit per citation. Customers with multiple citations can apply 10 cans per citation for the credits.

LexPark Executive Director Gary Means said the same initiative last year brought in more than 6,200 cans of food.
