Off-duty Pennsylvania police officer shot, killed in home

GLENOLDEN, Pa. -- Philadelphia-area police say an off-duty officer has died after being shot in his home in Delaware County.

Darby Borough police Chief Robert Smythe says one of his officers was shot at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in his home in Darby Township.

First responders found the 26-year-old man in an upstairs bedroom with a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to Darby Township police chief Len McDevitt. The officer was rushed to a local hospital but later died.

Neighbors told CBS Philadelphia someone was led out of the house on Magnolia Drive in handcuffs, but police have not confirmed anyone is in custody. Neighbors also say they heard arguments inside the home.

Few details of the shooting were released. McDevitt said more information would be made available Sunday, including whether criminal charges would be filed, which said was expected.

The officer's name isn't being released until his family is notified, Smythe told reporters late Saturday. He said the victim had worked as a part-time officer for four years.

"He was a shining star in the department," Smythe said at a news conference, describing the officer as "even-tempered."

"He knew how to talk to people, handle people," Smith said.

The officer had previously worked as a volunteer firefighter, according to Smythe said, who said that he would have recommended the victim the next time a full-time position within the police department became available.
