Police: NYC grandfather kills self in murder-suicide

NEW YORK -- An 86-year-old New York man is dead after, the police said, he shot his grandson in the head and then killed the man's girlfriend before shooting himself, CBS New York station WCBS-TV reports.

Police were called to reports of a shooting around 6 p.m. Friday in the borough of Staten Island.

When officers arrived, they found 86-year-old Heriberto Pagan laying outside his car with a gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Police were then called to a second shooting, where they found Pagan's 47-year-old grandson and his girlfriend, 28-year-old Claritle Christina Huerta, both shot in the head, authorities said.

Investigators said Pagan first shot his grandson outside of a house and then Huerta before fleeing to his car, where he shot himself.

All three were taken to the hospital, where Pagan and Huerta later died. Pagan's grandson was listed in critical condition.

Neighbors were shocked to hear about the shootings.

"This is like a nightmare," said neighbor John Rina. "Never heard of anything like this in my life."

"I just heard a man screaming, 'Help me, help me,'" another neighbor said.

The couple's 4-month-old son was found inside the house unharmed. He is now in the custody of the Administration for Children's Services.

The investigation is still ongoing.
